It was a relatively bright day for so deep into the winter and the walk was pleasant- and then we were within the warmth of the Cockerel. Looking around at the moderately empty room I thought for a moment, then began to move to my usual table, motioning Caraf to follow me.
Once we were at the table I sat in one side of the booth and got comfortable. "I like this place- have you ever been here before?" I asked curiously.

"A few times," I said, slipping off my cloak and laying it beside me in the booth. "Usually with a group of fellow adepts though. What about you? Do you come often?"

"Yes, actually," I confessed with a grin. "There are always new people to speak with. My great-aunt used to come here too, so it feels a little like knowing her in some way."

I smiled. "I can understand that."
One of the serving girls came over to us. I ordered a mug of mulled wine.

"Cider, please," I asked the girl, who smiled slightly and nodded before turning to walk to another table.

"When was the last time you were here?" I asked.

"About a week ago- since then I've been working myself into a deeper rut about having no new ideas," I told her with a sigh. "Could I have burned out all of my ideas already?"

"Not at all," I reassured her. "Everything goes in cycles. You'll have a new idea and then suddenly you'll have so many you won't know what to do with them all."

"I only wish I could store them in a jar during those times." Thinking for a moment, I took on a serious expression, then smiled. "Either way, I'll still have my fun. If one can't make art, they can always live or be art."

I strode into the Cockerel intent upon a warm apple cider and a delightful afternoon lunch, probably by myself and alone, but all the same I was intent upon enjoying myself. Only to find to my delight two very lovely ladies therein, engaged in conversation with one another.
I grinned at my luck, for I recognized Jess right off. Her lovely red hair was unmistakeable and I was glad to see her here. So I made my way over to her to say hello and introduce myself to her equally gorgeous companion before the opportunity passed me by.
I made a gracious entrance into their midst just after one of the serving girls had taken their order, and announced myself with a calculated flurish. "Well, a girl after my own heart it seems, for I do so love a warm cider on an afternoon such as this." and I bowed to the lovely blonde as I did so, a charming grin tugging at my lips.

"I would have taken you as one to drink something stronger," I teased, grinning and raising a brow as I looked at Caraf, stifling my laughter- after all, he didn't know she was engaged. "This is my friend Caraf no L'Envers- Caraf, this is Lucius."

"Pleasure to meet you, Lucius," I said, smiling. I had got the look on Jess's face, and had to make sure not to look at her again yet, or I knew I would laugh.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Caraf." I said evenly, the smile never leaving my lips as I swept a bow before her, even as I recognized her title, betrothed perhaps? I thought as I wasn't familiar with her first name.
"Ah yes, I do share a fondness for the stronger stuff but I was intent upon enjoying a nice cider this afternoon and I won't have you ruin it by teasing me with it today, sweet Jess." I said lightly, teasing. Giving her a wink to know my jest.
"May I join you ladies? It would be a wonderful afternoon to spend in your company and it would be remiss of me to pass up the pleasure of your company." I asked, my smile broadening.

Looking at Caraf and playfully ignoring Lucius I raised a brow, allowing her to make the decision.

"Of course," I said, smiling and gesturing for him to sit. He seemed nice enough and Jess hadn't given signs that she didn't want him around. She and I would just have to arrange for a private lunch another time, give us an excuse to get out again.

"Thank you," I replied, completely overjoyed to enjoy an afternoon in the company of someone other than myself and my depressing emotions. So I put on a great smile and thought no more of it, resolving to enjoy myself once more.
Taking a seat at their table I motioned to a serving girl to bring me a cider before turning my attention to Jess and Caraf. "Well, what wonderful chance brings you ladies here today?" I said casually, hoping I hadn't interrupted anything serious.

"Just getting out of the house," I told him, thanking the girl who brought the cider to the table and sipping it. "We both have a lot going on and decided to escape."

I wrapped my hands around my mug of mulled wine, letting the warmth seep into my fingers as I breathed deeply of the spices steam rising from the mug.
"Neither one of us seems to know how to delegate, so we had to get away just to find some time to relax," I added, grinning.

"Ah, yes. The all purpose spontaneous outing. Fit for all occaisions and need not require any preparation, or forethought. Wonderful!" I said grinning and giving a nod to the serving girl as she handed me my drink. "I've known myself to throw a few of those wild cards into my day just to keep things interesting." I added, taking a sip of my cider.

"Oh, rue the day I'm only dealt a few!" I exclaimed in a melodramatically sorrowful tone, back of my hand pressed to my forehead. "I demand two a week at least."

After swallowing a drink of the delightfully spiced wine, I chuckled.
"How out of place I must look," I said with a grin, "The only person at this table who doesn't search out wild cards to fill their day with."

"Not at all, my dear, you shouldn't say such things about yourself. You probably have many an unseen wild card in your hand, you just don't happen to notice them as much as the rest of us." I grinned, hopefully making light of the subject enough for her to feel comfortable again.

I laughed softly and smiled at him, touched by his effort to make me feel more at ease.
"Thank you," I said, smiling at him still. He was quite handsome and I wondered just how close he and Jess were. "I think all of my wild cards, were there any to be found, have been spent. I shall be married and surrounded by children before you know it and all my energy will be spent on them."

"Well, I can be your wild card- instant babysitter," I teased. "As long as they don't eat paper, that is."

Furrowing my brow as if considering, I told her, "It might be best to keep your paper out of reach, or leave it at home. Knowing the appetites of their parents, there's no telling what my children will eat." I chuckled and took another sip of wine.
