We settled in and the carriage took us down the hill and towards the shops.
“I told the driver to take us to one of the shops in the Artist’s District. It’s not the fanciest place, but the clothing is wonderful as are the prices,” I told her with a smile.

Having parted temporarily from Leyna at the Solarium, I'd changed to something a bit less fragile, in case we would have to walk in the murkier street of the City, and in the carriage, I'd stretched my legs a little, smiling at my new friend.
“Oh, that's wonderful,” I replied. “What is the name of the shop? I suppose it is one of your favorite shops, is it?”

“The Grand Magasin de Soie,” I answered. “And yes, it’s one of my favorites. Though in truth, I can shop just about anywhere.”

I smiled wryly at Leyna. “I suppose its offerings fit just what it says on the tin,” I teased. “Still, it would be a sensible choice to wear silk in the summer. Thank you for introducing me to this place.”

“It’s a pleasure, really. There are a lot of shops to visit, so if you don’t like this one, please just say and we will move on,” I told her.

“Well,” I said, smiling, “I suppose I will wait and see.” I looked out curiously, observing the city and the folks outside, the commoners and those who were riding astride. “Certainly,” I said, “you are making tales of D'Angeline hospitality pale by comparison to reality, Leyna. Thank you for taking me out. Will you believe, I've barely been out of the palace since I arrived?”

“I can believe it in fact,” I said with a soft chuckle. “It’s easy to get so focused on something that time just slips by and before you know it you’ve not left the house in months.”

“How so very true,” I replied with a little smile. I tried to be happy, but now that the great fear of Christien's death had passed, I was realizing how so very terrified I'd been of living in a world where he didn't exist. I looked out a moment, then turned back to Leyna. “Sometimes, though, focusing on a task may be worth it in the end.”
It was quiet, and full of hidden meaning, and yet I could not bring myself to say it plainly. It was silly, perhaps – surely everyone knew who I was, and how I'd stormed into his room. I suspected Leyna knew what I meant, though.

“Indeed, focus is a good thing,” I said, smiling but curious about what felt like more meaning behind her words.
The carriage drew to a stop and the door opened. “Ready?” I asked with wider smile.

I liked Leyna's smile – there was something a little bit lighter in it, a little bit more open, as if she was relaxing. That pleased me.
“I am,” I replied, nodding. “After you?”

“Oh yes,” I said, still smiling as I exited the carriage. I smoothed my skirts and glanced in the window as I waited for her to join me. I could see a lovely array of colors inside and I felt a rush of eagerness at exploring the new gowns.

Ifollowed Leyna, and I will admit, the shock of the variety fair dazzled for a moment. Serenissiman women of course wear a lot of color – but I was from Lucca, where our tradition was to be dour, and I'd been in mourning until the end of the past year.
“Oh Ashera,” I said, “I think we might be here a while...”

“That sounds like a wonderful plan,” I said, grinning. I slipped my arm through hers and headed us to the door. a clerk opened it smoothly and bowed us inside.
“Princess, it’s a joy to see you again,” she said, smiling widely. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
“Thank you Beth,” I said, returning her smile. After introducing my companion, I added, “We are here to look first, I think, before we try anything one.” I looked to Sivana for confirmation

I nodded, smiling happily at the comfort of our interaction – Leyna was proving to be someone I enjoyed and felt very at ease with, and I liked that. I needed friends I could trust.
“Yes, looking first sounds like a good idea,” I replied, smiling kindly, both at the woman called Beth and at my new friend. “I suppose I could use a bit of education in D'Angeline fashion...”

"Everything here is the height of fashion," Beth said, the pride in her voice more endearing that bragful. "If you have any questions, please just ask."
She withdrew and I turned to Silvana. "There is enough of a variety here that you should be able to find things you are comfortable with," I said. "Personally, I have yet to find the courage to wear some of the more daring styles."

"Really?" I asked, "but you have such exquisite taste!" I smiled at the clerk politely, and then tilted my head.
"Would you show me these styles, which you find so daunting?"

Glancing around, I led Silvana to a red silk dress off to the side. The skirt had a slit that came up to well over mid-thigh and the neckline plunged to the navel. Over the breasts, the silk was replaces with a very thin lace that would keep almost no secrets.
“This is the type of dress I meant,” I told her. “There aren’t many like that here, but there are some shops in the city where this is the standard.”

I found myself staring half-stupidly at the dress Leyna was showing me. Not only was it more revealing than anything I'd ever seen, but red as it was, it also meant to catch complete attention.
“And this...” I said slowly, “... is intended to.... be worn... by respectable people?”
I had a hard time believing it: the D'angelines I knew were mostly like Leyna, had taste in their fashion statements, and generally did not wear such... styles.
If that could even be called a style.

“It is… though the respectable part is fairly subjective,” I replied, laughing lowly. “I have seen more revealing actually, and worn at very public events.”
