Continued from Cible.Marie and I had walked arm in arm as if we'd known each other forever, and I was feeling absolutely joyful – happy, for once, for the first time, really, since Erika had died. I was so glad that petticoat had been torn! I pushed the door to the Poulet Gauche and wandered inside with my new friend, and said, “Here – at the bar, or should we take a table? And you should tell me everything about the dress, and the man you're making it for.” It was a very foreign thought to me – and she seemed so happy about it, and eager, that I couldn't help but be curious.

“A table if we are going to be having such conversation,” I said with a laugh and drew her over to one near the wall. I took a seat and glanced around, motioning for a serving girl to come to us when she was free.
I looked back at my new friend. “Do you come here a lot?”

I slipped into my own chair, chuckling. “Often enough,” I replied. “The barkeep's a good man – even if he has more good words to say than he has teeth.” I winked at her, chuckled, and leaning conspiratorially over the table, I asked, again. “So! Tell me everything!”

I couldn’t help but grin at the way she leaned in. “His name is Ferris, he’s from Alba,” I started. “The first time I really met him was at Elua’s fountain. We talked and he walked me home, it was so amazing. I couldn’t believe he was talking to me.”

It sounded like Marie was besotted indeed – just meeting by a fountain and walking about was ordinary enough, but she made it sound like rainbows had lit the way and flowers had bloomed as they walked in Night's Doorstep. She could have met Elua himself, and it would have been the same, it seemed.
“Ah, you're truly taken with him,” I teased. “What does he look like?”

A blush bloomed in my cheeks as she pointed out how taken I was, but it was only the truth.
“He’s about half a foot taller than me, he has brown hair and the most beautiful brown eyes,” I answered, still grinning. My fingers touched my forehead lightly. “And here he has the beginnings of his warrior woadings.”

I smiled a bit wider. He seemed like the kind of man that was pleasant to look at, though I wasn't quite like sure what she was on about with this woading business. “-- what's that?” I asked, looking probably a bit more thoughtful, but no less attentive.

How easy it was to forget that not everyone had seen Ferris or one of his company here in the city.
"They are like blue tattoos," I explained. "Sort of more like adept marquings I suppose. They receive them for accomplishments in battle and other deeds like that."

I tried to imagine what it must be like, to have ink on one's face – or how to get it, though I only had the fragment of an idea of how marquings felt, having never had any myself.
“He must be fierce-looking, then,” I said, “but I'm guessing he has a good heart, if he has yours.” I smiled a bit, tilting my head. “Do you speak Alban, then?”
I knew there were some who did, and very fluently, at that, since the Queen of old had married the Cruarch – but I was nothing like those well-bred folk, and so what I knew was only a few words, here and there, gleaned from passing johns.

“Only a very little,” I admitted with a wry smile. “He speaks d’Angeline so that is how we communicate for the most part. I am learning a little more though, it seems only fair.”

I nodded, just once, agreeing and understanding. “Is it hard to learn? I guess at least you gots him to help you. Think you'll have to speak Alban if you meet the in-laws?”
I paused, and laughed to defuse my sudden embarrassment. “My, I'm full of questions, aren't I?”

I smiled wider. “I don’t mind, truly,” I told her. “It’s going to be a long while before I meet his family, if I ever do. Most of the people here with him are political people, most of his family is still in Alba and I don’t know if I will ever meet them in truth.”
I glanced down at the table for a moment, sobering a little. “I am rather certain they wouldn’t approve of me. I try not to think on it too much and just enjoy the time I have with him.”

I frowned a little at the end of Marie's statement, and reached for my new friend's hand. “Marie, why wouldn't they approve of you? You're beautiful, and sweet, and talented as fuck, and I don't give a jazz what they expect, but anyone who's got you's lucky as peach, really. Would Ferris care?”

I blushed at her compliments, squeezing her hand in gratitude. “No, Ferris doesn’t care, but I know that deep down he knows I would match up. He’s the future ruler of Alba, and I’m just a farmgirl,” I told her.

Well, I gaped.
No, really. I gaped.
“... so you're going to be, er, a – do they call it a queen?”
Yeah, that was bigger than I could imagine. And then I paused.
“Wait, why isn't he paying for your dresses, if he's going to be a king?”
One thing I can't be faulted for: being impractical.

Her reaction made me blush deeply. “Oh no… there’s no way he will be allowed to marry me, even if it was what he wanted,” I said, shaking my head. “And… and I would never ask him to pay for my gowns. He would though if I did, I am sure of it.”

“Oh.” For a moment, I didn't know what to say – I was torn between calling myself naïve and being angry on her behalf.
“... so you're just going to be...”
His concubine? Or something?
It seemed completely unfair.

"With him, as long and as much as possible," I finished. I knew it might be hard to understand, but it was enough for me.

I felt quite sorry for Marie, really – loving someone and knowing he would never be... ah, but I understood, in a way. Only in a way, though. I didn't know a thing about love.
“Are you going to be alright, Marie?”
