Continued from [Aub & Shona] Pinky and the Brain.Well, this might have been the quieter I'd been in some time, though I didn't mind. After this past year, I had found some value in silence, and there were times when I found I needed it as well. Ushered into the very posh restaurant, I asked for a table for two, and beyond that, remained quiet. I wondered if my guest would push his stubbornness to the point of discourtesy, and not even say thank you, if we were silent throughout our drink. Ah, well, I'd have to see.

I said not a word and simply waited until the server arrived to take us to our table. He received a thank you and I sat down, looking at my companion with blank, if not stern, expression. She’d be waiting a long time if she wanted me to speak.

The sterner he looked, the more amused I was, and I sustained his dour look – and his very blue eyes, I noted – and after fighting it for a time...
…
I laughed. It was clear and light and joyful and profoundly amused, and when it was over, I looked up at the waiter, who looked absolutely bemused, and thanked him for bringing the order.
“Very well, my lord of Shahrizai,” I said once we were alone once more, “You win this round.”

She cracked, I knew that she would and I wondered if I should along with her. Perhaps it would be best, all things considered. “And is there some prize for this as well?” I asked, almost, just almost a tease, though in words alone and not in tone, for a spoke as flatly as I ever had.

I very simply could not resist, and so I leaned a little against the table, batting my eyelashes at him.
“I don't know, would my lord wish for one to exist?”
It was shameless flirting, and I was well aware of it. I expected him to be appalled or uninterested, but either way, his reaction would be entertaining.

I half arched a brow and wrinkled my nose at her flirting. "Sister, a Shahrizai does not enjoy being made sport of. Should you wish to purchase a second drink for me though I would not be opposed."

“My lord, swindling clergy is an offense to the angels,” I replied sternly, “and any sport I would make of any of Kushiel's scions would be to their pleasure, I assure you.”
I smiled, then, a touch wolfishly. I'd had a Shahrizai, once – much younger and far more handsome than this one, but dour in his own way. Nonetheless, I had good memories of Aramis.

“Then it would do you well not to suggest something which you do not truly intend to offer. A check between your brain and your over-eager tongue would serve you best I think.” I was now growing quite impatient for the drink and could only assume that indigestion would cause this to be an extreme waste of a fine meal. The damn chatterbox.

I chuckled, and leaned over a little. “My lord, my tongue is very eager, and I assure you that any tease I make rests on a kernel of truth. Now, don't be so rude. If you speak to everyone the way you do to me, you must be the most solitary being in the known world.”
Just as I said that, the waiter arrived with our orders, and I took him as a witness. “Is that not so, Messire, that constant frowning causes solitude?”
The waiter blinked, looked at me, then at Lord Shahrizai, and muttered an excuse to leave just as I repressed a grin.
“Ah, I think my case is made, my lord.”

“I was such before the tongue was tarnished and I am content in my stasis and I don’t need a flirtatious priestess to agitate me into some perceived humiliation, nor do I need her to drink me into effervescence.” I rolled my tongue about in my mouth, anything to focus on that wasn’t this blonde. I then eyed the food and released a breath and began to partake.

He was getting more verbose, and I took that for a sign – as I was willing to bed that the older man wasn't looking at me because if he did, he was at the deadly risk of smiling.
“My lord,” I said, “it would be uncouth of me to wish to humiliate you, when I see that you are an absolutely upstanding citizen. Rather, I believe my intent is to cheer you up. You are indeed so upstanding, that it is clearly spoiling your ability to smile, which in turn very probably is bad for business.”
I leaned over, and took a long sip of my drink.
“Smiling only brings about greater wealth, for wealth seeks company.”
And there, if he knew anything about the Night Court, my past was out.

I needed no cheering up from this former Bryony, as her last statement indicated. Instead I gave her yet another rebuttal. “The company of more wealth perhaps, not the chance of having it be gamble away by some flirt.” I would have grunted had I not opted for a drink of wine instead.

“Oh, and do tell me,” I replied, still irritatingly joyful, and on purpose, to boot, “how different is gambling from placing funds in investments, which may, depending on the trade, carry a good deal of risk?”

"What makes you believe that I am one prone to making investments? Simple saving, simple interest. It has done me well." Kushiel, I couldn't wait for this meal to end. "Gambling however has the odds against you from the start, at least when playing with a Bryony."

I gave him a wolfish grin, then, hands under my chin. “Unless one has a Bryony on their side, of course,” I replied. “Do tell me, my lord, do you live in fear, then, that every risk should be destroyed regardless of potential benefits?”
