Character Played By Matt Felker
Name: Kai “Ill-Begotten” Ungewollt
Title: Skaldic archer and bard.
Age: 24
Race (Lineage Origin): Skaldi/Camaeline
Gender: Male
Height: 6'3
Home Province/Country: Skaldia
Appearance:
Kai's appearance is a mix of D'Angeline beauty and Skaldic roughness. Standing tall at 6'3”, he has a long and lean body which lends itself to athleticism over raw strength. His hair is blond and long, and so long as he is in Skaldia, he sports a small mustache and goatee but keeps the rest of his face clean-shaven, contrary to most of his compatriots.
He has strong but stringy arms and long fingers that are effective both for the harp and the bow, and his impossibly blue eyes are always shaded with a tinge of melancholy. He sports a scar along his jaw, which he earned in his first skirmish as a teen, and several others on his body. When he smiles, he always looks a bit sad, as if something was missing in his life.
Personality:
Kai is a a bit of an outsider, maybe due to being half-D'Angeline. Raised as the runt in the litter, he's done his best to fit in, doing what was expected of him, participating in raids and such, but his heart wasn't really in it. In fact, he is a bit of a bardic type, tending to write epics, something he is not half-bad at, when he can take the time to write lyrics to match the melodies that fill his mind. He's shunned both for his gentler nature and for his half-breed heritage, even if he can hold his own as a fighter.
At heart, he is a gentle soul, but years of being shunned by his peers and feeling worthless have made him cagey. He has a fondness for children and is chivalrous towards women, regardless of their heritage, which drives him to showing kindness to female captives, while he can be ruthless to males, in an attempt to fit in the tribe.
History:
Kai's mother, a Camaeline captive, was taken by the tribe during a raid. Her lineage and identity are unknown, as she could speak no Skaldi, and none of her captors seemed interested in finding out more about her. Kept as a farmhand, she was used as a pleasure slave on occasion by enough clan members that Kai's father is also hard to pinpoint within the group of candidates. She died a year after giving birth to the baby, and Kai was handed over to Hanneke Ingversdatir, the childless widow of a bard. She nursed the toddler well enough, though she never truly showed him much love, rather punting the child over to chores.
His only joy, as he grew up, was learning to play the harp, something on which his foster mother insisted for the sake of her dead husband's memory. When Kai grew into his teens, his affinity for strings extended to those used on bows, and he joined the archery units of his clan, finding it a less gruesome weapon than the axe or sword. Though he learned to use short range weapons as well, he shies from them as much as he can, and instead focuses on his marksmanship, and has perfected his aim to sharpness over the years. His sniper abilities have earned him a bit of respect among those who have seen him in action, which makes his life within the clan bearable.
His past few years have been spent trying to fit in, though he ever remains gentle to any female captives brought to the clan's kraal, out of misplaced guilt, perhaps. He has however managed to learn enough D'Angeline to converse with them, which means he is often required to participate in prisoner interrogations, something he absolutely despises. When the war with Terre d'Ange began, part of him felt that the Skaldi had brought it upon themselves. Though he will do what he can to defend the weak, he feels passive about retaliation, and could be a weak link within the Skaldi ranks, though he tries to hide it to the best of his ability.
