I'd been to the Artisan's district, looking for the McDermott's, and had been happy and relieved to see that they were both still about and striving. Anna and I had spent a lovely afternoon of tea and pleasures, and grinning, sated, in an excellent mood, I walked back to the temple, humming under my breath.
The sun was shining bright as the afternoon waned, and the sun began to show its burning colors to the blue heavens as I crossed Elua's square. I'd walked long and hard, and my sandal broke, though for now, I ignored it, even as the thong covering the ankle flipped and flapped on the dusty ground.

The days work at the bank was over and I was making my way straight for home. They day had been long and uneventful and in all things normal, as I preferred it.
The sun was glaring and I was thankful that it had a mind to set, and hasten sleep. My mind was on my clerk again who still seemed to think that she can make mistake after mistake and not think I would notice. Part of me wondered if she was doing it on purpose, but for what idiotic motive I did not know. I stepped on something then, some rock and I cursed under my breath and kept going.

I was looking up, not down, and I passed a man whose features I paid little heed to. He would have remained a faceless stranger, but Fortuna, it seemed decided otherwise.
In my step, my sandal did not follow as I lifted my foot, and the long robes of brown flapped, making me stumble, straight into the stranger.
“Naamah's tits!” I cursed, and then, having not realized what I'd said, I laughed, looking a bit sheepish, as I found myself staring up into the stern eyes of an older man. “-- My apologies, my lord,” I said as I tried to straighten myself up. “It seems my sandal is feeling social today.”

I was walking, just walking, when I felt a sudden impact on my side. A flash of brown and yellow and a moment of cursing and I stumbled a little as a woman fell into my arms. I picked her up and set her rightly on her feet simply to get her off me. My look was stern and I answered her. “You would do well then to teach it good manners. Though I shouldn’t wonder if it takes after it’s mistress. Your apology is accepted however.” No matter my annoyance there was no real reason to hold the accident against the woman.

Well wasn't he the joyful one. I was back onto my feet and looking at the elder man, and I chuckled. “It's very stubborn in its way, I'm afraid, my lord,” I replied. “Though I fear to say, perhaps it is best as such – I'd sooner have a happy and midly cussing take, than to look at the world with dour eyes such as yours. Is there aught to make you smile, pray tell?”
I was almost willing to make him talk and distract him for as long as I could. He seemed like a living challenge, and one I'd perhaps want to take up, if only for the amusement.

I was finding myself hardly amused and furrowed my brows, my eyes like little slits of sky. I hoped should would simply let me be and decide to punish me for my misstep by tagging along beside me like a lost puppy. “No,” I answered flatly. Indeed I could not remember smiling, truly since Enide, and only glimpses after a good night in Valerian. But that had all been years ago. “No do excuse me. I should’ve been home by this time.” I did hope she’d listen to reason.

I found his answer distressing, and frowned, deciding that it should be my mission to make this man – this Kusheline man, I noted, he had hair and eyes like Aramis, my patron of old – smile, just the once.
“That is a terrible thing to say, my lord,” I replied charmingly, “and I'm half inclined to believe that you are saying this so as to challenge me. But first! Introductions.” I inclined my head a little, and offered my name. “Shona Tertignan.” I grinned, and I felt my apple blossom loose in my hair, about to fall and so I reached to place it back. “In the service of Anael, of course.”

Oh gods! The last thing that I wanted was to challenge her. If only I hadn’t walked this way. “Of course...” I murmured. “If you must know, I am Auberon Shahrizai. Now I know you are cooking up some plot in that young mind of yours to create some way of making me more to your liking. I think you should cease such attempts now and we will both go on our merry way.”

Ah, so he was as I thought. I laughed brightly, and shook my head. “Not in the least, my lord Shahrizai, I find you just as perfect as you could be, and have no design to change your person in the least. Yet it does seem that I've offended you with my banter. Allow me to repay you, and to offer you a drink, in the establishment of your choice.”
Already, I was about to slip my arm in his, ready to drag him there. Truth be, I liked him dour.
He was much more amusing that way.

Hmm... She worded her response well, and it would be most rude of me to decline an offer of recompense. Though I could not help but wonder if she was toying with me for her own amusement. That was something, should it end up being the case, that I would not abide by under any circumstances. “Very well, your offer seems reasonable. I have a fondness for the Porte du Paradis, and perhaps I will have my dinner there as welll.”

Oh, the jinx! Porte du Paradis, hm? Well, I'd not spent much of my tithes since Bryony, and I thought it might well be an adequate way to spend some of them. I smiled pleasantly. “I will gladly invite you for a drink at Porte du Paradis. It is aptly named, and a place a priestly person such as myself should know well. Where you have dinner, then, will be up to your convenience, my lord.”
The last of my sentence was intentionally vague, could sound flirtatious. I was having fun with this one.

“Then let us go … and do something about your sandal. We do not want another repeat of what occurred, unless you wish to pay for both the meal and the drink.” In that case of course I would not be entirely put out if that was what happened. Her last sentence though, that did confuse me somewhat. “A question, sister, what did you intend to mean with that statement?”

I raised a playful eyebrow, and tried, very, very hard, not to laugh. Thankfully, a good Bryony adept knows to hide her game, and I was, in my time, an excellent Bryony adept – save for my heart, it seemed, but that was because Anael had always had it.
“My lord,” I said, smiling, looking both innocent and a bit bemused, “What do you think I might have meant, with that particular statement?”
To make him say it, and possibly take a risk, oh, that would be priceless.

Now she was simply playing with me and I would have turned around right then and started back for home were the idea of a free drink not as tempting as it was. It shouldn’t have been, nevertheless I went along with it. “I really haven’t the faintest notion. Perhaps you were making sure it was only the drink you were paying for.”

Oh, the jinx. He was really the dourest fellow I'd ever met.
“Perhaps,” I replied, “but that would make me as greedy as a Bryony, would it not?” I grinned with all teeth. “Or perhaps I am indeed an adept in disguise, trying to earn herself a patron for the night?” I batted my eyelashes at him, then got more serious.
“Or perhaps I am just what I seem, a member of Anael's clergy, attempting to be civil.”

I could have laughed. An attempt to contract me … amusing, though it didn’t show on my face. “Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. I know one thing, sister, you are a woman who speaks to much and I certainly hope that wine does not bring the chatterbox out of you or we may have to cancel the entire matter, free drink or no free drink.” In all honesty I didn’t truly care at this point as I was finding myself interested, but I wanted to see her reaction to that.

I laughed again, he was starting to be precious. “Oh, is that so? You are a man of silence. I can most certainly live with that, then.”
And shutting up absolutely, I made a show of quiet solemnity, waiting for silence to become unbearable between us.

I actually gave a sort of half smile when she eventually gave in to silence and I happily continued in such until we reached out destination.
