I'm currently reading The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel. In this book, members of the titular Clan each have a totem animal, which is basically a protective spirit that matches their personality in some way. I like to use animal symbolism when creating my characters. So my question for everyone is: If your characters had a totem, which animal would it be and why? Here are the ones I've come up with for my characters: Landis - Red Fox, for his hair as well as his preference for cunning over brute force Adelaide - Bumblebee, because bumblebees are generally easy-going, but piss them off and they sting you over and over Mael - Mouse, funnily enough, unassuming, yet determined, he doesn't quite have the animal's sharp teeth, though. Bat is also quite appropriate. Zephyr - Spider, obviously, particularly a species like the wolf spider, which will actually stalk its prey or lie in wait for prey to pass by. Catherine - Rabbit, timid, has lots and lots of sex, did I mention timid? Leandre - Great Horned Owl, nocturnal (Leandre likes to do most of his writing at night) as well as associated with wisdom, and an excellent hunter, as well Emile - I didn't really have an animal in mind for Emile, but I came up with a Clydesdale Horse, the modern breed is huge, somewhat intimidating, and you definitely don't want to be kicked by one, but sweet Yue - Another character where animal symbolism doesn't immediately spring to mind, but I imagine Deer would be a good choice, or a White Hart lol

Heeeee I used to be obsessed with the Jean M. Auel books. XD Let's do this. Gillermo: He's a fox! He's been a fox ever since almost day one, that's even what Mirielle calls him. Though since he's return, I've been seeing him more like a wolf. Jacques: A bear. Calm and steady, and good with his own, and with the potential to be cuddly. But you won't like him when he's angry. Shona: A cat! With her playfulness and contemplative aspects, the cat seems to meet both worlds. Silvana: Definitely a lioness. Rawr. Alayne: Kendrick used to call her twin sister Julie a sparrow. Alayne gets to be a butterfly, with the idea that she's in her chrysalis, and will eventually emerge with beautiful wings. Or something. Geraldine: Pegasus, says Decimus. I'd still go with mare, with the idea of loyalty, and sociability, and affection, etc.

Oooh interesting topic. Uhm, I guess for my characters I have these sorts of animals in mind. Raisa: Deer, because she's watchful and creative and rather innocent. Eulalie: Raven, curious and intelligent Chantal: Cat. Mysterious, independent and clever Arianna: I'm actually not sure about her. Something solitary and defensive. Cascata: Dove. Because she comes across as meek and devoted.
