It was sunset - there were a few johns in the bathhouse, sexing up the girls, and I could hear stifled moans and groans through the walls.
I didn't have one of my own of yet - but the night was young and I was hopeful, and I'd made myself ready in case someone wanted me, but I wasn't overly eager or absolutely dejected by the lack of attention.
Instead, I wandered into the inner yard where Yves' girls liked to play during the day, and I sat there, looking at the sky and dreaming of a better life.

I'd been gifted a handball by a john, and though I thought it a stupid gift at the time, I found it oddly soothing to just toss the ball at the wall and have it come back to me. When I saw Alayne enter the courtyard, I walked over to her. "Hello," I said, bouncing my ball and catching it.

“Hello,” I replied to the new girl. She wasn't so very new, per say – but to me, a lot of people were new. Then again, I remembered no place, but this one.
I sat on the steps, looking at her curiously. “You're not working tonight?”
It was a simple offer for conversation – I'd felt the need for it, though if she refused me, I'd shrug and walk away... perhaps to read the only piece of poetry available in the bathhouse, to my knowledge.
His fair Alayne...
The thought made me smile.

"Not yet," I said, bouncing the ball a few times more, then bouncing it to her. "A john gave me this a few days ago. You want to play?"

“Funny john,” I commented wryly. I'd have preferred coin myself, but Elodie seemed happy enough with it. “Why not? What's the game?”

"He was a bit funny," I said, "but he paid well." I caught the ball and held it up. "The game is hand ball." I explained. "Tis simple enough - I bounce the ball, it hits the wall, and then you try to hit it back at the wall for me to hit. If you miss, that's a point for me, and vice versa."

“Alright,” I replied, and put myself in position, though I wasn't sure how well I'd do. “Johns can be so funny sometimes,” I went on, thinking of one in particular. “One wrote me a poem.”
And it was very nice, too.

"Oh, that's happened to me too," I said. "I've had poems of love, and poems of scorn, sometimes from the same man. If I didn't know him, I'd say he was perfectly addled." I bounced the ball against the wall, beginning the game.

“Last poem of scorn I got was pretty dark,” I said, shrugging. “Then again, it landed on my face.” The ball was bounced, and I ran to catch it, then bounced it back. “Did any ever offer you a job?”

"A job?" I asked. "Besides the one I've got?" I caught the ball. "You're not supposed to catch it, by the way, you're supposed to just hit it back."

“Oh, right,” I replied, and waited for my turn to hit the ball. “Well, yeah, 'sides this,” I went on. “Some guy wanted me to go and be his maid.” I chuckled. “I said no, thank you, I'd rather earn my living on my back than doing lavatory duty for the rest of my life.”
