I couldn’t wait any longer; I had to tell Chris I was going to Alba with Ferris.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the doorframe to his study. “Chris, can we talk?” I asked.

I looked up from frowning at my papers, but then smiled, glad for the interruption. "Of course Marie, come in," I said warmly. I was glad to put the papers aside. I was trying to help Mala with looking after the estate, but I wasn't good for very much.

Stepping in, I pushed the door closed behind me, wanting us to be able to have a truly private talk. That done, I crossed the room and sat in one of the chairs near his desk.
“How are you?” I asked, hoping a little chit-chat might ease my nerves.

"Easily frustrated by paperwork when it's so nice outside," I admitted with a smile, my legs stretching out beneath the desk as I suck into a more comfortable position. "And you? Are things going well?"

“They are,” I said, nodding. “Aramis has given me more hours at the shop, I really like working for him, and Ferris sees me whenever he can…”
My voice trailed off as I began to speak of Ferris, and I tried to change the subject, “What are you working on?”

"Nothing that is nearly so interesting as what you came to talk to me about, and now won't broach," I said with an amused grin. "You did the same thing when you were little. Spit it out sis, whatever it is. Did you drop a frog in the kettle again?" Now I was teasing, calling memories from a time when our family had been together and happy.

My cheeks reddened and I shook my head. “No, no frog in the kettle,” I said, smiling at the memory. Chris knew me so well; I should have known I wouldn’t be able to skirt the issue for long.
“Ferris is returning to Alba… soon,” I said, looking at him again. “He asked me to go with him…and I said yes.”

My mouth gaped for a moment before I hurriedly snapped it shut. I knew my sister had caught the eye of the future Cruarch, but I had no idea that it was more than a passing fancy for either of them. "I... Wow. Congratulations," I managed, but I mean it. "That's a fantastic opportunity for you. Will I get to meet him before you leave?"

The knot in my chest eased at his reaction and I nearly slid from the chair in relief.
“Yes, I hope so,” I said. “I know you’ll like him, he’s so wonderful.”

I nodded. I knew that Mala had met the lad and approved of him, but I wanted a chance to judge the young man myself. This was my little sister we were talking about, after all. "Good, good. I want to take the measure of the man who's whisking you off. Is this a permanent thing?"

My mood deflated some as I shook my head, looking down at my hands.
“I don’t know,” I said softly. “He’s told me that once he returns, he’s likely to be pressed to marry an Alban woman.” My fingers twisted together. “I love him Chris, truly love him. I can’t imagine coming back here without him.”

"Alright, not to worry. You'll always have a home here," I told her with a smile. "But if you love him, and he loves you, then you'll be able to figure something out."

I’d expected more of a reaction to my admitting that I loved Ferris, but perhaps it was one of those things that had been more obvious to him than it was to me.
“I’m going to miss you,” I said, looking at him.

I got up and went around the desk to her. "Come here," I said, giving her a hug. Then I clucked her on the chin. "I'll miss you too sis," I continued, my voice softer. "I've loved having you and Henri around. But Alba, wow. I'm very proud of you Marie. You've grown into a fine woman. I'm glad this princeling sees it too."

Blushing, I couldn't help but smile at his compliments. "Thank you," I said. stretching up, I kissed his cheek. "I love you Chris, thank you for everything."

"It was a pleasure sis," I told her with a grin. "Maybe Mala and I will come visit, if I ever talk her into it. And I love you too. I'm very happy that you're following your heart."

“I would love for you guys to come over,” I said, grinning happily. “And you are the one that gave me the courage to follow my heart, I hope you know that.”

I grinned again, and felt my cheeks warm. I wasn't one to blush, but to have someone tell me that I inspired them to do anything, well... "I'm glad. If I could have taught you anything as a big brother, it would have been that."

I chuckled and nodded. "You are an angel, I swear," I said with another grin. "Maybe a piece of that vanilla cake, if there's any left?"

“I made sure and put a piece aside for you,” I told him with a grin. “I’ll get Giselle to bring it and some tea up.”
I headed out, looking back once more to smile at him. I knew that it was true that I never would have been able to follow this path in life had it not been for him, and I would never forget that.
