It had been a few days since Azabel and I had decided to break off our second engagement, though this time it was completely amicable. After much discussion we'd come to realize we were almost better as friends then we were as husband and wife. I was saddened of course, I had always seen Azabel as the mother of my future children, though in away I would always see her as the adoptive mother of my twins. But it just seemed as though no matter how much we loved each other it just wasn't enough, we were too different. So we decided to remain in contact but allow no expectations to come between us and allow what ever happens to happen whether that was to end up together or end up with other people.
With that in mind I ventured out into the city, not wanting to sit at home and dwell on thoughts for fear I'd panic and beg her to take me, I helped put down the twins for a nap and headed to the palace district.
Wandering, I wasn't sure where to go, but after thinking about Phreya and her soon to be husband I decided I would search out for a gift for either the pair together or a single gift for each. Thinking that mayhap some custom jewelry for my sister would be nice I headed to Maison de Metiers. Stepping into the shoppe I began to look around, browsing for something that might catch my eye.

Things in the City were tense, and as such I'd agreed not to stray too far from home unless Emeric or another guard could accompany me. I'd had one bad experience already, with the thief in the Square, although that had led me to Hal, so it hadn't been all bad. Still, my brother and sister were worried, and I could not blame them.
There were no guards about today, however, but it was too beautiful to stay inside. I decided that as I had agreed not to go "too far" I would stay in the Palace District, which was the nicest part of town and closest to our townhome in the City.
I bought a few things here and there: a new nightdress, perfume that smelled like sandalwood and lavender, and a book of poetry with an ornate cover and illustrations.
Mother said that a lady never bought her own jewelry, but I decided to take a peek in the jewelry store anyway, because it would be fun to at least have a look.
Once I was inside, I saw that there were a few other customers about, and in fact most of the stores I had visited seemed to be doing well today. I paused to peer at a row of necklaces, each one with more diamonds than the last. It occurred to me that the cost of one of these would feed a peasant family for several years and I admit that I felt a bit guilty for even wanting something so beautiful, yet ultimately useless.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't noticed I'd been creeping further down the row until I'd bumped into someone.
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry," I said, looking up into the face of ... Prince Delauney, I recognized him from his sister's engagement party. I felt my cheeks heat slightly, it was embarrassing enough to be bumping into people, but someone from the Courcel family? At least if I outranked someone, they would cover up their annoyance with me, but if the Prince wished to be annoyed, there was little I could do but beg his forgiveness and hope he hadn't taken offense.

My mind was most definitely else where, I couldn't help but think about Azabel and the fact that not so long ago I had been here shopping for her. But I was doing my best to focus on the moment and remind myself not to get too caught up. It would have been good advice had I not then run into a young lady. I turned, caught by the surprise and chuckled a little as I looked down at a lovely dark haired noblewomen with beautiful blue eyes.
"Not a problem at all my lady." I said softly, instantly taken in my her beauty. "No need to apologize either." I added, still smiling. "I was quite caught up in my own thoughts so it is just as much my fault." I teased, suddenly surprised how easy it was to flirt considering the circumstances. It made me feel a little more at ease with Azabel and my choice to end our relationship.
I turned back to the cases for a moment before glancing sideways at her, my hands clasped behind my back as I looked at her. "Forgive me, you look familiar, have we met." I felt horrible but I often met many noble men and women and faces often blended into each other; I was better with names.

Oh good, he didn't seem offended in the least, and in fact he was rather friendly. I tried to think about what I'd heard of him, that he had been engaged to the Princess Azabel and that their relationship was rocky, but of course that was gossip, who knew the truth of it? I'd been confronted with that sort of scenario too often to heed words unless I knew them to be true.
"Not formally," I said in response to his question, a friendly smile forming on my lips. "I've only been in the City a short time. I am Amelie de Trevalion, perhaps you know my brother and sister, Ghislain and Sophie?"
I brushed back a dark strand of hair, made darker still by the fact that it was still a touch damp from my bath and continued to look up at him, wondering if he did indeed know the more well-connected members of my family.

"Oh of course." I said smiling even more and noticing the way she pushed her hair back. "I've not formally met them either, or at least I don't believe so." I added with a bit of an embarrassed chuckle. Knowing that she was a Princess of the Blood I turned then and took her hand before bowing over it and placing a kiss on her skin.
"Forgive my rudeness, I'm Prince Delaunay de la Courcel, it's a pleasure to... formally... meet you your highness." I added with a bit of a flirtatious grin before I stood and released her hand.
"Are you looking for something in particular or are you like me and just browsing?" I asked curiously and interested in striking up a conversation.

"The pleasure is mine, your Highness," I returned, a natural smile blooming over my lips. He was friendly, and I liked the way he smiled. I'd heard a lot about him, but it was interesting to meet him in the flesh.
"Oh, I'm just browsing," I said, lifting up all of the shopping bags I already carried, "Although, I keep saying that, and yet..." I dropped my arm again and glanced back into the display case.
"The jewelry is beautiful here though, are you shopping for someone in particular?" I blushed after I said it, realizing that it could be taken for prying, especially since he and the Princess Azabel were the subject of so much gossip. "I'm sorry, that sounds a bit nosy, you don't have to tell me." And now I was telling him what he did and didn't have to tell me. I could feel the heat in my cheeks grow hotter and so I turned to look fully at the necklaces, hoping he wouldn't notice ... though of course, I knew that he would.
"Anyway, these are lovely, whoever you're shopping for," I said, trying to save the conversation and not have him think that I was complete fool.

Her cheeks flushed perfectly and I felt my heart beating faster at it; I always was a sucker for a girl that could blush in such a manner. I smiled still as I felt a strange nervousness warm over me starting in my knees and working its way up to my neck. "I'm not... I'm..." I cleared my throat. "I'm single." I said a bit awkwardly then realized how awkward it was.
"I just meant," I chuckled. "I'm not really browsing for anyone else, I'm just looking. I was thinking about getting something for my sister; she just got engaged." I ran my finger down a case, finding myself intrigued by Amelie.
"How come you don't have some one here helping you with your items?" I asked then as I saw how much she had. "You should let me carrying them for you." I suggested gallantly.

I felt badly immediately, because it was obviously not a comfortable topic for him. I reached out to touch his arm softly and gave him a wry smile.
"Me too, but being single's not so bad, right?" For instance, if I had a man in my life, I might not be standing here comforting a Prince of the realm, but I kept that part to myself. I was glad when the subject turned to other things, however, and I dropped my hand to the display case and smiled.
"Yes, I attended her engagement party, actually. She must be very excited." I thought that getting married must be amazing, to love someone that much. I had only ever truly loved my family, so I wasn't sure what that would be like.
"Oh," I smiled, "I have a bodyguard, but he wasn't nearby when I left, so I promised to stay close." When he offered to carry my bags, I blushed again. "Oh I couldn't, a Prince should not be carrying around someone's shopping." It was rather sweet of him to offer, however, and I couldn't help but smile even more widely.

I had wished I hadn't been sick the evening of Phreya's engagement but at the same time I was also with Azabel too; I thought about Azabel then and hoped that she was happy. But when she spoke of being single I also couldn't help but think about perhaps asking her to dinner... Not perhaps, definitely. She was sweet and young and above everything else I wanted nothing more then to get married, and stay married. I never regretted anything with Azabel but I was ready to settle down completely.
"Please, it's no problem at all to take your things. In fact if you're supposed to have a body guard and you don't have one, it will be my honor to escort you." I said bowing over my arm as I crossed it against my mid section. "I may be a prince but I'm a gentleman first." I added with a chuckle as I looked at her with a lopsided grin.

I almost laughed out loud - how did I keep acquiring bodyguards? My sister was wasting her money on Emeric, it seemed, because of my tendency toward impatience and ending up out and about on my own. Did I seem so terribly helpless, or were all the men in this City extremely chivalrous? Either way, I certainly couldn't complain.
"Are you sure? I feel like I should be carrying your bags..." Although he had no bags that I could see. Still, I handed my bags over, my cheeks reddening at the sheer amount of them. "I think I spent my entire allowance for the month in one morning," I said with a laugh. I hoped he'd laugh too because his smile was so infectious.
"I shall have to get a job, and whatever will people say?"

She handed her bags over to me and I took them noting that she certainly liked to shop, but then again I didn't mind that. I had a great deal of money myself mostly because I didn't buy much, but I deeply enjoyed buying gifts for others.... Though it wasn't like I was buying her something... Or not yet at least.
"It would be as unseemly for you to get a job as it would for you to carry my bags." I replied teasingly; it mattered not if she had a job, not to me at least. "Though if you did decide to get a job I would suggest bag carrier, then at least you'd be doing two things at once and I'd have an excuse to hire you." I smiled, the jesting tone changed for one of more flirtation.
"For surely that would be the only way to manage to spend time with you without arrising suspicions of alterior motives." My smile grew more spreading to my eyes and showing my teeth as I felt a warmth fill my body and my stomach to flutter with nervousness. "Unless, that is, if you would simply do me the honor of joining me for lunch. Then you can be sure my intentions are clear." I added, my voice softening and low as I wished no one else to hear my private flirtations.

I had to laugh at his words. "Touche," I said, rubbing my wrist where the handles from the bags had rubbed at the sensitive skin there. His teasing made me laugh a bit more, and I realized that I felt lighter than I had since coming to the City. Prince Delaunay had a bit of a reputation, but none of the rumors mentioned that he was so charming and amusing. That's what I got for listening to rumors, I supposed.
When he invited me to lunch, I felt myself blush softly though of course I was thrilled at the invitation. It had only been a few minutes, and already I knew that I liked him, that I wanted to get to know him better.
"I would love to join you for lunch," I said, "Though I didn't mean to interrupt your shopping. Would you like some help choosing a gift? Not to suggest you aren't capable, but sometimes a woman's touch can help in these matters." I smiled and hoped he didn't take my words for a criticism, in truth I only wanted an excuse to spend more time with him.

I studied her for a moment and thought. Part of me want to wisk her off to a special lunch and shower her in my affections "How about this," I said and put down her bags. "I'll call over my footman to take of your things in my carriage and they you can help me pick out an appropriate gift. I turned and moved to the door calling my man over who took her items and departed leaving just Amelie and I.
"There, now you have my undivided attention Princess." I offered my arm. "Nor do you have to worry about me carrying your bags." I added with a chuckle.

"A footman, now see that is a wonderful idea. I suppose I should know better than to just go wandering off without even so much as a carriage." I made a little face as I watched the man come and collect my bags. Turning back to Delaunay with a smile, I looked again at the glass case.
"What sort of thing were you thinking of for the happy couple?" I ignored the necklaces and cast my gaze around the store. "If it's for both of them, perhaps instead of jewels, you could get them something for their home." I pointed at a section that housed beautiful crystal vases and bowls. "Something like this?"

I looked over the items as I thought but then shook my head as I looked at her. "Actually I'd like to get my sister a gift as well as one for Lucien then I can think about getting a singular gift after they are wed offically." I replied as I came up along side her, giving me a chance to stand closer to her.
"I think my sister my like a necklace or a bracelet, something that she could where out but nothing so fancy as to be ostentatious." I looked to Amelie again and smiled.
"What sort of gift would you like if some one giving you something?" I asked curiously. I had two reasons for the question; first was an honest attempt to decide on a gift for my sister, the second was a way to determine what sort of girl she was and what sort of things she would accept should a gentleman suitor court her properly.

"That makes sense," I said, looking back again at the jewelry case in front of us. It was a good idea, separate gifts for the engagement and one gift for the wedding. He moved closer to me and I had to admit that I found his presence rather distracting.
"A necklace or a bracelet would be lovely," I agreed, my gaze going to the case closer to him, where bracelets glittered in the sunlight that came in through the window. I had to step right up next to him to look at it, my shoulder brushing his chest and I tried not to think about how electric it felt for my skin to even touch his clothing.
"I personally would love a bracelet," I said, pointing at one that was worked in white gold with small sapphires the color of his eyes. "That one is beautiful." I did not recall if his sister had eyes like his, but if she did, that would surely bring them out.

She began to move toward me and I took a soft breath and let it out before inhaling the scent of her once she was next to me. She stepped inward, pressing herself between me and the case though not in an improper way.
While she spoke I did nothing but stare at the back of her head and closed my eyes, letting the way she smelled wash over me. I couldn't quite tell was it was, some mix of vanilla and something else but it made me want to lean into her. But when she finished speaking I turned my attention to the case and the bracelet she indicated.
"That one is lovely." I said as I looked over it, my hand reaching out to gently rest on her small of her back as I moved her down the line to another set of bracelets. "Phreya always receives sapphire's, what about this." I pointed to a case of topaz in silver. "I want something original for her." I kept my hand on her back but feared what she might think me so I removed it so that I can clasp them behind my back.

I felt his hand against my back, something of a proprietary gesture, but I had to admit that far from being offended by it, I enjoyed it. There was something about him that pulled me in, like a moth to flame, though if I went by rumor alone I would have to be wary of being burned. I tried to stop thinking about how much faster my heart was beating and pay attention to his words.
"That makes sense," I agreed, laughing a little. "I bet people with blue eyes often have that problem." I looked over at the topaz he'd indicated and nodded. "Oh, that's lovely..." I might have said something else, but I was suddenly acutely aware that he had stopped touching me. Not thinking about it, I leaned into him a bit more, wishing that I could somehow let him know that I didn't mind his touch without being terribly forward.

"But?" I asked, she had stopped speaking as though mid sentence and then she leaned toward me, my hand came out and went to her back again and I used the pause to shift till I was behind her now, both hands on either hips. "But too plain?" I asked softly, the feel of her rear pressing into my groin made my stomach flutter with delight as I leaned her against the case. "What about that one?" I continued leaning against her as I looked down into the case and pointed one out, this one I wanted to buy for Amelie, I knew she would look lovely in it and though I had just met her I was contemplating buying it for her. But what would she think if a strange Prince gave her an amethyst bracelet... Well it wouldn't be the first time that a Prince, or me for that matter, had purchased jewelry on a whim. I continued to press my pelvis to her rear as I pressed my lips to her ear. "I think you would look lovely in amethyst... Amelie." I added as I felt my breathing increase against her hair.

"Oh, it's not plain," I made a little face, "I just don't know your sister at all, so it's hard for me to judge." When his hand returned to the small of my back, I thrilled at the touch, and then even more so when he pressed himself against me to look again at the jewelry. I let my eyes flutter closed for one moment, an overwhelming feeling of desire heating my blood and making me wonder just what it was about him that could make me feel this way. I had a fleeting image of him bending me over this case and taking me and I had to fight the flush that came over my cheeks.
"Oh, that's beautiful," I breathed, forcing myself to pay attention to more than just the feel of his body next to mine. Amethysts were my favorite and it made me smile the way he'd picked them out so easily.
"I like to think I do," I said with a little smile, turning my head up to look at him. He had eyes I could drown in and for a moment I forgot that we were in a shop at all and it was like it was just the two of us, alone in the universe.

I could sense the change in her, the way she breathed and how her body shifted, I couldn't help it. I leaned forward a little and pressed my cheek to her head for a moment, my lips near her ear as I inhaled her scent for a moment as I tried to stop myself from getting an erection right there. "Then I think you should have it." I said gently before pulling back slowly. I stood back from her then, allowing there to be space between us and for the cool air to touch both of us. "Monsieur." I called over the attendant who appeared in front of us. "I will take this bracelet please." I looked to Amelie and smiled wide for her, as I pointed to a necklace as well. "And that necklace as well." I added as I continued to look at her. He nodded and took the pieces away as I wrote out a bank note for my footman who was standing at the entrance. I called him over and directed him to retrieve the money and return with it for payment. I shopped here often so I wasn't too concerned, I knew the owner would not have an issue. He returned with each item in a case then departed and I turned to Amelie. "May I?" I asked, pulling out the bracelet first.

"Oh, you shouldn't..." I began, but Delauney was already purchasing the beautiful bracelet, and a necklace to match. I wasn't sure how to decline without being rude, and besides, I didn't really want to, they were so lovely.
"You may," I said, holding out my wrist to him and smiling. He was very handsome, in a way that only a D'angeline man could be, and a way that found intriguing and heart-stopping all at once.
"Thank you, Delauney," I said, a small blush on my cheeks at his kindness, and I was already trying to figure out how I was going to repay the kindness, and hoping it gave me an excuse to see him again.

I smiled gently as I placed the bracelet onto her slender wrist then brought out the necklace next. Moving with steady grace I came to stand behind her and laid the necklace down before clasping it in the back. When it was secure I let me hands moved to her hair and collected it, pulling it out from between the chain and her neck before letting it fall back to a more comfortable position. Letting myself savour the moment I then moved in front of her.
"You're very welcome." I said softly. "It is a prince's perogative to shower gifts upon beautiful women he just met." I gave her a teasing smile then, wide and playful as I had the boxes collected and given to my footman.
"Now, where to lunch?" I asked, offering her my arm to take at her leisure.

His fingertips brushed against my wrist as he clasped the bracelet, and the faintest of shivers ran along my flesh. Even more so when he brushed against the sensitive skin of my neck and when he pulled my hair back I had the sudden desire for him to bury his hand in my hair and ... well, thoughts like those were hardly appropriate and I forced myself to breathe more evenly.
"Well, I cannot gainsay a prince's prerogative," I said with a smile, avoiding the urge to reach up and trace my fingertip along his jaw. Light, what had come into me today?
"That depends," I said, a teasing smile upon my lips. "Can you cook?"

My smile turned full and bright as it reached my eyes with pure enjoyment, I couldn't help but be turned on by her candid nature and I nodded a little.
"I'm a very good cook actually." I said softly as I looked down at her. "But you'll have to be the judge of that." I knew there was plenty to make at the house and if one of the footmen went to the market in our stead I could start the meal while we waited for him. "My carriage or yours?"

I thrilled at his acquiescence to my idea, preferring the idea of an intimate lunch with him than one in a restaurant. I wasn't sure why, we had just met, but there was something about him that was both intriguing and endearing, and I suppose I wanted to find out more.
"Yours, I can send mine back to the estate with a message for my siblings." I made a little face. "You would think I was a child the way they worry." Of course, my sister had been murdered at the Palace, so I could understand, though I did not bring that up of course. "I look forward to seeing what a Prince can cook up on his own," I teased, offering him my arm with a smile that I could not seem to wipe from my lips.

I nodded and took her hand to wrap it around my arm before guiding her out of the shop.
"Nonsense, you're family is just concerned about your safety." I said with a smile as I pushed the door open and walked us out onto the street to where my carriage was. I called over my foot man to find Amelie's carriage and send it home with a message that she would be joining me for lunch and I would return her home in my own carriage, then asked him to pick up a few items for lunch. He hurried off and I opened the door for Amelie and helped her in before following, then called for my driver to take us home.

"Well, lucky for them, I could not be safer," I said, climbing into the carriage and settling in. Now that we were in the carriage, I was worried that it might be awkward, considering we had only just met, but the silence was companionable. Still, I wanted to get to know him better, and I could not do that sitting her and gazing at him like a silly child.
"So, Delauney, do you make a habit of rescuing women from their overly ambitious shopping trips?" I was teasing, my smile not just on my lips but in the sound of my voice as well. I liked to think he wasn't in the habit at all, and that he was as intrigued by me as I was by him.

Chuckling I shook my head no at Amelie's comment. "Not really." I replied with a little grin. "Just those ones I'm irrepressibly attracted to." I added with a mischievious grin but then chuckled again. "Truth be told I try to be a help when ever I can." My smile turned my fond then playful.
"I'm surprised though that you didn't already have some one. Most women of your status don't usually go shopping without some sort of entourage." I knit my brows a litle. "Do you usually shop on your own?"

"Not usually," I said, making a little face. "I'm supposed to have a bodyguard but it wasn't quite arranged yet, and well, I thought if I stayed close by it would be fine. I haven't been in the City very long, but it seems safe enough." I knew that that was a naive viewpoint, but I was a bit stubborn at times.
"Luckily for me, I found you," I added, smiling a dimpled smile, hopefully deflecting a lecture or something of that sort. I didn't imagine Delauney being the type to lecture, but you never knew, and I had had enough of them since my arrival.
