I had an urge to gamble; it wasn't for any reason really I was feeling pretty good. My lovely Lola was officially my wife and I was enjoying the fact I had picked some one completely perfect for me. I knew Lola would be an excellent wife -and one day mother- as long as I could keep her from opening her whore legs to any man that showed her interest. Lola had a tendency to be a whore in many fashions and I wouldn't risk her being inpregnated by a man that wasn't me. I had been lucky so far that she hadn't been stupid enough to get knocked up by some servant. Either way it was the only thing on my mind as I entered into The Prince and Pony Inn.
As soon as I entered I moved to a table that had a a group of gentlement sitting and playing cards. I asked to join in and was of course allowed to sit down and was delt in right away.

With all of the new income from my body guarding I was almost running out of ways to spend my money. My riding tack was all taken care of, I had a new wardrobe, even new swords that I didn't intend to use, but that stuff wasn't very good for keeping me amused. Time to get back to my roots, and that meant the Doorstep and finding a game to involve myself in. The Prince and Pony had a reputation for good gambling and I went in, finding a seat at a table where some other men were dealing out cards, set out my money and started to play.
I'd only been in for a few hands when another man approached, this one dressed a bit better than everyone else in the place and claimed another seat, and I waited as the cards were gathered. I had no idea who this guy was but I'd been enough royalty lately to know what they were generally like and if nothing else this guy had some money for me to win. With a rakish grin I ordered another beer and started to shuffle the deck as it was my deal, then started to hand them out. "Well men, it's five card draw, threes and eights wild. Ante's five centimes."

I settled into my sit and took up my cards when they were dealt to me, holding them up as I looked over them; 3 of hearts, 2 of diamonds, 3 of spades, ace of spades and King of clubs. I scanned them quickly before tossing my 5 centimes into the pot along with the others then went back to my cards. Figuring I should try for a simple had and wondering if I should be bluffing this early on into my game I discarded the King of clubs and ace of spades right away when it came to my turn and in exchange recieved a five of diamonds and nine of spades in return. I tossed another five centime into the pot and waited for others to make their moves.

The new guy seemed quiet enough, watching his cards intently and raising by five, which sent some of the more conservative guys to folding. Me, I had no reason to be so careful, so I turned in two of my cards and pulled new ones, arranging them in my hand and then throwing in his five plus another ten. The straight I was going for was a longshot but what was the fun of playing too closely? There'd be plenty of other hands to worry about, and I sent another of my competitors packing with my raise. That left the newcomer, a very grizzled-looking older man and myself, and I eyed both of them over my cards, waiting for what would happen next.

Others folded leaving just me and two others and I watched the pile add up. With one last glance of my cards I added my own ten and called hoping that my hand would be good enough. I laid my cards down then and waited for the other two.

It seemed like it was time to call the cards and I watched as the nobleman laid his down- three of a kind, aces. Not a bad hand, especially considering all of the wild cards that were laying around. The other man had his two pair, not enough to beat that, and I laid mine down with a discerning eye. My flush hadn't come through, leaving me only a three of a kind of my own, all nines. "Looks like beginner's luck," I said with a crooked grin, gathering my cards and setting them in a pile for the next person to gather and shuffle. "Well played, but still beginner's luck." After all that was the only way he could have beaten me.

I was pleased with the outcome of the cards and chuckled a little at the dark haired man's comment as I collected my winnings and stacked them as I looked up at him. "I thought beginner's luck only referred to some one that's never played before." I said in good fun as I waited for the next hand to be dealt.
As the cards were shuffled and divied out one of the men grumbled and stood, dimissing himself from the table without many words which left only four of us.

The blonde man seemed to take the ribbing in stride, which was probably a good thing. If he was defensive it boded badly for the game, and even the chance of getting through it without a fistfight. That would have broken up the tedium though and been the first action outside of the bedroom I'd seen in a week. Who knew being a bodyguard was such dry work? "If you haven't played against me before you haven't really played," I replied with another good-natured, cocky grin as I waited for the cards to be dealt, then tossed in my five centimes and picked up my cards. The dealer had called for five card draw again, but this time only fours were wild.

I laughed again, this time more jovially as he spoke as I picked up my cards and counted two nines, a seven, a jack and a two. "I'll take that as a challenge then." I replied as I tossed in my own coin and when it was my turn I decided to try for a straight and traded in my two and nine in hopes of getting some better cards. I was rewarded with an eight but instead of a ten I got my two back in a different suit. Inside I was steaming but on the outside I was still smiling as though I'd gotten the cards I wanted. I guess it was time to bluff.

I wasn't dealt too bad of a hand this time around- at least it had potential- and I smiled a bit more widely to myself, looking around at the other players and throwing in another ten centimes when it got around to my bet, which was the first one to be entered. To put forward so much before I'd even chosen my other cards was a little bold, but what the hell? Time to separate the men from the boys, or at least to see who had the sacs to stick around. Two of the other men at the table took me up and I watched the newcomer to see if he was going to take the chance. After all I didn't know what cards he had and I was putting myself on the line as much as anyone else.

The dark haired man made a large bet right off the start and I was suspiscious that he either had a very good hand or that he was bluffing just as I and I decided to take that bet. I tossed in enough coin to cover the bet then added double to the pot causing one other man to drop out and then walk away from the table with a grumble. I looked over to the man then, a bit of s smile tugging a the corner of my lips, the one I bare when I had my prey in sight.
