I should have been angry when some of my rangers came back with the news that some Skaldics had been found dead at the border, an obvious message from the D'angelines. I was more puzzled than anything else though. That was their response to the raids? Killing men that I'd discovered to be the dregs of our society? Common thugs, not warriors, though I suppose I should have wondered what they were about when I'd sent them packing after they'd offered their "services." One of them had had the nerve to ask for my sister to wife!
I stood at the border with a few of my men, surveying the dead, shaking my head. "I'm not sure what they meant to accomplish, but I should perhaps send them a letter of thanks for ridding us of this scum," I said, and the reply I got was some laughter and several off-color jokes.
We burned the bodies only because whatever else, the men were Skaldics, but my mind was troubled on the ride home.
