The messenger boy was nervous, but that was obvious to anyone who cared to look in his direction. I can't say I blamed him, I would have been nervous too in the presence of someone so infamous. Spider, they called me, and many other things, names unfit for polite company.
I leaned forward, palms resting on my desk, the scent of the fragrant wood nearly muffled by the smell of fear.
"Tell me again," I said softly.
He did, the words spilling from his lips like a torrent of water from a dam, telling a twisted tale of men selling flesh like fine cattle.
Secrets are slippery things, and especially so in the hands of simple messengers.
"Interesting," I remarked, making a few notations on parchment. "Useful information, indeed." So saying, I rested a small pouch on my desk. "This is yours, then."
I always paid for information regarding fleshmongers in gold.
I was dimly aware that the boy was sputtering his thanks, but I ignored him now, motioning to Tillonius, he was my best guard, and the only one I trusted with such errands.
"See that they're out of my city by nightfall," I whispered.
"And the boy?"
I regarded the boy with half-lidded eyes. "If he has lied, he's expendable, if not, leave him be, he could still be of use."
Killing customers was bad for business, after all.
