The future Cruarch and his guest were next. I didn’t recognize the girl or her surname and part of me wondered just who she was to have caught his eye.
“Thank you both very much,” I said, smiling. “And thank you for coming.”

"Vladimir's here, Sergei's eldest brother. I do not want to talk to him." My voice was upset, but I kept it low, not wanting to draw attention to us. "I'm sorry. I didn't know he would be here tonight." I drew in a deep breath and tried to settle myself. It was hard, especially after Sergei's visit. I simply wasn't ready to deal with it yet.

She was obviously upset and I nodded in understanding, bringing a hand up to stroke her cheek lightly. Not wanting to run into the older brother of the man she'd recently had a difficult parting from would have made anyone a little unsteady, or at least I would have guessed so. "Do you want to go?" I asked her just as quietly, meeting her gaze with some concern.

"It was a pleasure to be invited. We'll let you get to you other guests, but I wanted to wish you both much luck and happiness in our marriage," I said, smiling again. Though my words were regular, everyone wished newlyweds - or in this case, the engaged couple - luck and happiness, I really meant the words. Both Lucien and Phreya seemed like decent people who deserved good lives.

I bowed briefly to the couple as a farewell, and then led Marie away. "Drinks, dancing, food?" I asked her, free from our social obligations for the night.

“A drink, and then a dance,” I answered with a smile. I glanced back at the pair we’d just left. “They do look happy together, don’t they?”

I couldn't tell if Sophie was actually interested in spending time with Hal or if she was just being polite, but there was no time to ponder the issue, because my brother arrived shortly thereafter.
"Ghislain," I exclaimed, leaving Hal's arm for a moment to give my brother a hug. He had a woman with him and I smiled at her as I stepped away. Anyone who was a friend of my brother's must be amazing, so I was genuinely excited to meet her.
"Hal, this is my brother Ghislain. Ghislain, this is Baron Hjalmer de Valliers." This time I made sure to introduce him properly, though I had given my brother a more informal introduction. I had the feeling that he would not mind, it was a party, after all.

"A pleasure to meet you, Eric," I said, hoping to put him at ease. He seemed a nice enough boy, someone that would hopefully be kind to my sister. At least, he would if he knew what was good for him. "Are you two enjoying the party so far?" I asked, sipping at the drink I held but not tasting it at all. "It's an interesting place to host a fete, but it does seem to work."

I chuckled lowly after the pair left. "I'm glad I have you to talk to all the royalty," I murmured into Phreya's ear. "I've heard some strange things about that lad, though he seemed nice enough."

The line moved and then we were next.
“Our turn,” I said to Joie, smiling. Stepping up to the couple, I smiled wider.
“Congratulations you two!”

I returned my sister’s hug, happy for her affection greeting. I regarded the man with her curiously. He was foreign that was clear. I’d have to get to know him before I made any sort of judgement about the company my sister was keeping. The same went for Sophie of course. “An pleasure, sir, I am sure. This is lady Henrietta Langois,” I said, as proud as anything to have her by my side.

I saw who was next in line, and my face broke out into a grin. "Quinn, good to see you," I said, hugging him with the obligatory thumping of the back. "Glad you could make it, and you, my lady de Mornay." I bowed to her briefly. "It's good to see this rascal has managed to keep you around, he moons terribly otherwise. Now have either of you met my fiancee, Princess Phreya de la Courcel? Phreya, this is Quinn du Paras, my foster brother, and his fiancee Joie de Mornay."

Our brother came up, a woman on his arm, and I managed not to raise my eyebrow at her gown. Or rather, lack thereof. But Ghislain was clearly as proud as a peacock to have her there. Then again, she was beautiful (even if I didn't think she had any taste) and her older brother held a duchy in Azzalle, so I suppose Ghislain wasn't completely stupid in his choice. I couldn't help it though, from first impression I didn't like her.
"A pleasure, Lady Langois," I said, at least trying to be polite. I didn't owe Ghislain much, but I could manage common courtesy. "I am Sophie, that is Amelie, and this is Emeric Deveroix." I glanced to my bodyguard, deliberately not labeling him as such, knowing he was probably bored out of his mind by this point.

"We still have to congratulate the happy couple." I took another deep breath, and it helped. I even managed not to shy away from Landis's well-meaning touch like a skittish horse. "Let's do that, get a drink, and then see if I've calmed down by then. I don't want to ruin our night." I met Landis's eyes and did my best to smile. I could do this.

I forced myself to bow to Amie's brother. "Your Highness." I said, the words foreign in my mouth, even after all this time. It felt much better when I straightened up though, standing tall and straight beside Amie. It was obvious that I was protective of her.

Well, there was certainly something heavy going on in this family and here I was with front seats to it- and right now it was the only thing to break up the monotony. I'd shaken hands with the blustering man who seemed to think it was his job to look out for little Amelie, though I couldn't tell if she knew what he likely had on his mind. Sophie had some guess though, or so I thought, and I'd gotten pretty good at reading her so far, good enough to see that anyway. Then Ghislain came over with Henrietta and I smiled a bit more crookedly to see her. Obvious Big Brother didn't approve of me, but I wondered if he knew the kind of girl he had hanging on his arm, looking as delicious as she did. "Good evening," I said when I was introduced, bowing politely to the pair. "A pleasure to see you again."

"I'm having fun, it's really great to have a chance to look at all of this art," I replied easily, glad that Victoire and Eric seemed to get along well. He'd said he needed more friends in the City and I knew that my sister was a good one. "Especially since I haven't had a chance to come here before. I wonder if there will be dancing though."

I smiled at both the thought of art and dancing and I couldn't help but sneak a peek around the room, wondering who all I might dance with. If it was only Noemi I'd be happy of course. I then nodded about enjoying myself. I kept silent though, just listening to the sisters talk.

"They certainly do," I agreed as I led her over to the man behind the bar, his assistant reloading the trays that went around. But I wanted something special. "Do you have any uisige?" I asked, and the man nodded with a grin, shuffling bottles around to reach one in the very back of his selection. As the man poured, he assured us, very proudly, that it was the best uisige to leave Eire.
When the glasses were ready, I lifted mine to toast. "A taste of what's to come," I said with a little smile.

Grinning, I touched my glass to his before taking a sip. Unlike the first day we met, I was prepared for the strong burn of the liquor and managed not to cough after I swallowed.
“I hope there’s more than just uisige to drink over there,” I said, laughing.

I knew that she was doing her best to be rational and I smiled a bit as I pulled my hand away. "A drink would probably help your nerves," I agreed, then started to lead Mercy toward the table that had been set off to the side where we wouldn't be in the way. "A drink, then we'll say our greetings, and perhaps a dance afterward if you're feeling up to it?"

My grin was crooked. "Aye, there are many different things, not nearly as strong as uisige. I'm sorry, I forgot you don't really care for it. Let's get you a glass of something else. I'm not being a very good escort am I?"

“You’re being a perfect escort,” I told him with a grin. “And I feel I had best get used to this or I am going to embarrass myself over there.”
I took another sip, managing to not even make a face this time.

My oh my.
On Ghislains arm as I was, I smiled softly, demure and polite as he introduced me, and I forsook his arm long enough to dip into a low curtsy befitting the royal stations of his sisters. Ghislain I adored, and Ghislain was the only reason I was here, but I would show his sisters the respect they deserved. Emeric too was there, but I gave him as polite a smile as I had the others, unwilling to favor or ignore him. He represented a fun time, but I was more focused and concerned with more pressing matters.
"I am honored to meet your Highnesses," I said, smiling warmly at them both. "I have heard wonderful things from Ghislain, and I'm happy to have finally met you both."
I glanced to Ghis, sharing him in my smile as well, but I didn't take his arm again at the moment, needing to show I was able to stand on my own as well. I was a judge of character enough to discern Sophie would be the more difficult one to win over given she was the one who took up the introductions and spoke for her sister, but I knew too that having Amelia on my side would help ease my standing in the family as well. In the end, the only one I really cared about was Ghislain, but if it would make it easier on him, it'd make it easier on me by turn.

I had three reactions to judge all at about the same time. Sophie seemed unimpressed with Henrietta at best and it hurt a little. I didn't like the look the bodyguard was giving her either. But I was proud, so very proud of Henrietta. She was handling herself well and it pleased me very much.

My smile grew as we stepped up, and I was never so proud to be on Quinns arm as I was now. Seeing him with Lucien was as close as I'd ever come to seeing him with any family at all, though Lucien was, I knew, as good as blood related, if not technically.
"Congratulations," I said, smiling warmly at them both, but sidling most with Phreya. She had on a beautiful gown and I had a mind to tell her so, but the timing wasn't appropriate yet.
