It wasn't often that I recieved days off from the Comtesse, but after she caught her husband bending me over the dinning room table and filled to the hilt, she decided it was time for me to get out of the house. It seemed as though there was a pattern in which I received time off and it usually evolved around how much the Comte lifted my skirts.
Their marriage had been one of mutal elevation and convienence as the Comtesse did not have title before marrying the Comte, and the Comte had half as much income before his wife. In turn the Comtesse had little issue with her husband and his sorted affairs, in fact encouraging them some times when it suited her, but she feared with me that her husband my discard her, or worse, should he choose to remarry. The Comte has his ways and he was generally a kind lover being only rough when he was drunk and then it was never really his fault. The Comtesse had never out right touched me by I could tell she took a certain amount of pleasure when I was often humiliated by her and husbands requests of me. But both, on different occasions, made it clear to me that should I not be completely compliant with either of their wishes, that they would make my life very difficult.
So it was that I continued on with my duty, doing what I could to serve my house hold with a hope that one day I would be able to pay off my marque enough for them to set me free. In the mean time I had resolved myself to enjoy the Comte and Comtesse affections, forcing myself relax and take my own pleasure from their actions. In a way it was not unlike being at the Night Court, taking patrons was the same way for me; we made love, some times hard and some times soft, but most times I just tried to allow myself to enjoy it. Either way it was the means to an end in which I could allow myself to take comfort that before long I would be free from any form of slavery.
And like the Night Court, happily, I managed to safe up coin here and then allowing myself the pleasures of things that I wasn't provided for. Things like candies or cakes, or even ribbons or proaches for my gowns! Today I decided to treat myself to another of those pleasures and attempt to allow myself to socialize. I went to the place that was said to be frequented by Kushielines; hoping I might see some one I knew I ventured into Nights Doorstep in search of said place.
When I did find it I entered a little causiously, my rose coloured gown covered by a deep red russet cloak and I pushed the heavy door open and walked carefully across the floor to the bar where I ordered their cheapest red wine. When it came I graciously paid and then began to sip, too nervous to really look around at anyone yet.

I had never been to the Midnight Inn before, but I had heard of the name from other adepts. There were quite a few places that I was told to beware of, but the Midnight Inn didn't seem to be one of those places. I hoped that there would be interesting people that I could meet. Perhaps people that might some day become my patron or come to my debut.
I pushed the door open and made my way inside. I was wearing a sleek black gown that hugged my curves and fell down past my ankles. I wore a simple silver necklace and I had pulled back some of my red hair from my face. I looked around, hoping to find someone interesting to start a conversation with.

I drank my wine steadily in little sips letting the sharp liquid fill my senses and I let out a little sigh. As I sat I turned my head and looked toward the door before catching sight of a young girl that entered into the tavern. She looked young, younger then me but not by much and she had the distinct look of an adept, I'd been at the Night Court long enough to recognize the makings of one. I couldn't always tell what house they came from but I could always tell the adepts. I flashed her a brief smile then and returned to my drink.

As I looked around the establishment, I saw a dark haired woman smile at me. Feeling comfortable enough to introduce myself, I walked up to her and offered her my hand, "Good day to you, I'm Jessamine de Verruil no Valerie. I don't believe we have met before?"
There was something about this woman. Something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. She seemed to have some kind of very subtle sadness beneath her eyes, and I wondered what kind of life she lived.

I hadn't thought she would come over but the red haired girl joined me at the bar and reached out her hand to me. She was so bold that my cheeks warmed immediately in a soft pink blush as I reached my hand out to her. "It's a please, Jessamine." I answered in a mousey voice. "My name is Alais no Fermat." I had been right in the fact that she had been an adept, but it surprised me a little that she was so bold and yet a Valerian; I had always assumed they were as shy as Alyssum.

I shook the woman's hand gently, taking note of her blushed cheeks. "It is a pleasure to meet you Alais. I was hoping to meet someone new today. I hope you will indulge me and have some drinks with me?"
I signaled to the bartender and ordered myself a white wine, "This is my first time being in a place like this. It has this really earthy quality that is just so welcoming. Have you been here before?" I gave the woman a friendly smile, hoping that she would open up and talk to me.

She sat down with me and I smiled almost happily at the fact that she seemed nice and willing to have a drink with me. "It's nice to have some one to drink with." I replied softly. "And no I haven't been here before. I heard that it was frequented by Kushielines and I had hoped that I might see some one I recognized," I chuckled then, blushing a little as I did. "Or at least make a friend."

I picked up my glass and clinked it with hers, "It looks like we both have the same goal, and I think we will accomplish it today."
"To friendship," I said before taking a sip of the wine. "Perhaps we might meet some Kushelines by spending some time here. I'm going to have my debut in a few days, and I hope that by getting myself out there, I'll bring more to the auction." My eyes looked at her to see if what she thought of my strategy. I didn't know if other members of the Night Court put themselves out there, but I hoped it would make things better for me.

"To friends." I echoed shyly but smiled and touched the edge of my glass to hers. "Congratulations on your debut." I added as I sipped my wine and looked at her side long. She was an interesting companion for the evening and I wasn't quite sure what to make of her. Not that I thought her false, I just suppose I had suspected Valerians of being like Alyssums except for the pain. But Jessamine seemed more like a and Orchis or even an Eglantine.

I took a sip of my wine as I looked at her over the glass, "Thank you. I feel like it's my first step into adulthood. "
"So, tell me a little about yourself. Why are you looking for Kushielines? " I asked her with a slight furrow in my brow. I wondered if she was looking for patrons or if she was simply looking for a interesting interaction. Or was she hear to find a bed partner?

"I'm from Kusheth." I said by way of a response to her question, though I wasn't sure there was much to tell about me. "When I was younger I was sent to Alyssum House and raised there till I was sixteen. But soon after my marque was purchased by the Comtesse de Fermat to be her lady's maid and I have been doing that for the last year or so to work off my debt owed." I shrugged a little when I finished. "I don't really have friends so I was... I hoped that may hap I would meet some one here." I offered a gentle smile then.

I nodded when she said that she was from Kusheth, that explained a lot. She was hoping to reconnect with some people from her home providence.
My lips curved up when she said that she was from Alyssum House, "Oh, so you're a courtesan. That's wonderful... How were you able to have your marque purchased? I mean...I love Valerian House, but I think it might be nice to have a change in scenery. And I'm sure there is more freedom too?" I was curious as to how things were for a courtesan on the outside. Especially since I had been straying a bit further than I should lately.

The whispers and gazes in Elua were beginning to grate on me. My blood was running hot, and I headed to Night's Doorstep. It seemed the best place to cool it down. I wore simple dark green breeches, with a white shirt and a tight leather jerkin, also in green. My boots added another bit to my height, and I was soon moving through the streets.
My simply confidence was apparent, and nobody bothered me. Too bad. I needed a drink. Something to cool my head and my blood. The Midnight Inn. Hm. The name seemed promising.
I pushed open the door and stepped inside, my eyes adjusting to the light therein. The place seemed busy, but not overcrowded. I found an empty table easily enough. The server soon approached, eyes looking me over, assessing me. My accent could certainly not be seen, nor predicted.
"I'd like something to eat and some honey mead if you have it." I said before even asked. My look said I didn't care what the meal was. Without a word she nodded and moved off. I sighed, hoping the alcohol made it to me soon. I always relaxed when I drank.

I blushed. "Well I wouldn't call myself a courtesan, I don't even have my marque started." I explained. "I wasn't a very good Alyssum and the Comtesse needed some one to help her. She happened to come across me and that was pretty much end of story." I added, my voice so soft it was barely a whisper as I took a sip on my wine.

I smiled at her blush. I didn't like hearing people talk down to themselves, but I wasn't sure what to say. I nodded in understanding. My eyes widened when I saw Hal coming into the Inn. I waved over to him, giving him a small smile. I wasn't sure if he wanted to be alone or not.
I turned back to Alais, "That is my friend Hjalmar Fellstone. I met him yesterday. Would you mind if I had him join us? He's a very sweet guy. He paid for my meal, and I'm sure he would pay for ours." I gave a wink to Alais.

I looked back to where she had waved and looked to her; I wasn't very good at these sorts of interaction. "I uh... I suppose." I said glancing back to the fair haired man. "If... I mean I don't have to stay if you don't want me too." I said nervously as my fingers toyed with the stem of my wine glass. I didn't make friends well, hence why I had none.

I smiled when it looked like Hal recognized me, I picked up my drink and put my arm about her waist, "Come on...let's join him at the table. I want you there. You did want to meet new people, right?" I began leading her to Hal's table.
"Hi, Hal. I wanted to introduce you to my friend Alais no Fermat. Would you like some company?" I asked sweetly. I was pretty confident that he would be open to it. Although I had only met him for a short time, I believed that we had both made a impression on one another.

I smiled as they began to walk over. I stood and smiled as they drew near and Mine introduced her friend. "It is nice to meat you Lady Alais. I'm Hal. And you two are free to join me. I'd love the company Mine."
I moved quickly to pull their chairs and gestured for them to sit. After they did I moved them to the table then took my own seat.
"So how long have you known one another?" I asked.

I felt put on the spot and embarassed, afraid to make a fool of myself. What was I to do? Say no? My chest began to beat hard but before I knew it I was sitting in a chair and being called a 'Lady'. I ducked my head a little, my hair falling forward a little as I cast my gaze downward but between Jessamine and Hal. "Not long." I said softly, only looking up at the stranger from beneath my lashes. "We just met actually."

I nodded at what Alais had said, "Yes, she just told me that she used to be a member of Alyssum House until her marque was sold to a woman. "
I turned back to Hal, "How has your experience been in Elua so far?" I glanced at Alais, filling her in, "This is Hal's first time in Elua. He has lived in Skaldia and Camlach."

Interesting. "Ah, I see. Well, no worry dear Alais I will not bite. Would you two like anything to eat? My treat."
Then Mine asked about my stay in Elua. With a sigh I replied, "It is trying in some ways. Life is opulent, easy. But the looks and whispers I hear all the time are unnerving. I am hoping to overcome it though."
I notice the server coming back and gesture to the two women. "Whatever they like." I say, and take my drink as she sets it on the table, drinking long from the stein.

I shook my head gently with a quite 'no thank you' to food before I studied my drink and took a sip as I listened to him speak. When the server came back to the table I ordered another glass of red wine then settled my hands clasped gently in my lap as I crossed my ankles beneath the chair. I continued to keep my gaze down, only glancing up here and there as it was clear the pair had things to speak on while I was the odd man out. I certainly liked Jessamine and Hal seemed very nice as well, but I never did well in these sorts of circumstances and I silently prayed for a reason to depart. My face felt warm and my heart raced with nervousness that I would be included in a conversation between two people that had quite respectfully met previously.

I shook my head at an offer for more food.
I gave Hal a look of concern. I turned to Alais, taking notice to how she has become so withdrawn. I shook my head, "It's not right that you're being treated this way just because of your race. None of these people even know you." I looked around the Inn, looking back at some of the people who were starring.
I turned back to Hal, "We should stare at them and see how they like it." I gestured toward a couple. I kept my gaze on them until I saw them turn back to their own meals, "It's not so pleasant to be starred at, hmm?" I asked them with some firmness in my voice. I glanced at Alais, hoping that she would support me if not with her expression than perhaps with her words.

The cues were there and I was unsure if it was just me, or the fact that Mine and myself had already met. Alais certainly seemed uncomfortable. Her gaze was turned down and she was very withdrawn. Mine's defense of me made me smile, but it was unneeded. I finished my drink and then said softly, "I shall depart. Please feel free to order whatever you wish. I'll go talk to the bartender and make sure he understands that it is all taken car of. Alais, it was a great pleasure to meet you. Mine, I'm sure we'll meet again."
There had been so many circumstances in which I was not wanted that the signals were easily read. I'd found it much easier to simply leave rather than force my presence on others. I stood and nodded at both of them deferentially. "Goodnight Ladies." I turned and made my way to the bar, speaking quietly with the bartender and pointing out the two women at the table. Coin changed hand and I thanked him before exiting.

When Jessamine began to speak I felt even more intimidated, I glanced over briefly to the people she had gestured to then looked back to Jessamine and shrugged before glancing at Hal. When he suddenly dismissed himself I felt my heart race even more then fear that it had been my fault. I couldn't handle the stress of the situation any more and all my greatest fears had came true. I looked to Jessamine and forced a gentle smile. "I think I should depart as well, my mistress is probably looking for me. I... apologise if I ruined your evening." I continued to keep my smile on my face as I rose, curtsied and followed behind Hal's departure. I bit my inner lip as I stepped outside after Hal but turned the different direction as him and hurried home.

I had been defending Hal, and he spoke about leaving. My brow furrowed in confusion. I wondered if I had said the wrong thing, then I watched him leave. I turned to Alais, and she was standing up to leave. I stood up and followed her. I walked out the door, and grabbed her hand, lightly, "Alais....you didn't do anything wrong. I don't know why he left like that. I just wanted to say that it was great getting to know you. I hope we can do it again some time."
I moved forward to give her a light hug, "Take care..." I gave her a light smile, hoping that she wouldn't be offended by my hug and that I wasn't being too bold.

I was surprised when Jessamine followed me out to the street, and for a moment I was afraid she would be angry for scaring off a potential patron. But when she spoke, being kinder then I had ever expected I smiled broadly and nodded as I embraced her gently back. "Thank you Jessamine." I answered her softly. "I would greatly enjoy another chance to spend time with you." I added. "I will send a letter to Valerian House soon." With that I curtsied once more and then turned, heading back in the direction I had been heading.
