I opened the door to the salon, purse in hand. This would be my final visit to add to my marque. I looked around and didn't see the marquist right off, though I was sure he was there somewhere.

I was listening for the door as I was expecting Kaden for her appointment. When the bell tinkled I stepped out front and smiled.
"Good day," I said. "How are you today?"

He stepped out with a smile. "Good day, messire. I'm doing quite well. And you?"

“I’m excellent, thank you,” I replied, still smiling. “If you’re ready we can go ahead to the back.”

I nodded, heading for the back. I headed for one of the changing areas, having done this numerous times before, and emerged wearing the robe that had hung in the area.

She went to change and I finished with the final preparations. When she emerged, I smiled and gestured to the table. “I’m ready if you are.”

I nodded and walked over to the table and removed the robe before laying down on my stomach.

Once she was in position, I went to the table and lightly ran my hands over her back as I inspected it.
“Any problems after your last visit?” I asked.

I felt his hand on my back as he looked at the marque. "None."

“Excellent,” I said, nodding to myself. Turning, I got the calipers and began marking out the final points of her marque.

I felt him marking out the final of the marque, my stomach in knots of actually completing it.

“Your House seems to have several adepts finishing their marques lately,” I commented as I finished the measurements. “It must be a good time at Gentian.”

"Really?" I said, a bit surprised at the statement. I wasn't aware of any others making their marque. "May I ask who else came to you to finish theirs from Gentian?"

My hands paused for a moment in their work, surprised by the fact she didn’t know. “If it’s not common knowledge, I don’t know that I should say,” I replied, my voice careful as my hands returned to their work. “I would hate to ruin someone’s moment.”

My face contorted in confused thinking. Who had recently finished their marque? And if it was someone I knew, like how I thought Messire Kachine knew who it was, why haven't I heard about it yet? I sighed, letting the matter go for the time being. It wasn't like I could do anything about it at the moment.

When I finished the measurements, I said, “I’m ready to start the marquing, are you ready or do you need a moment?”

"I'm quite ready," I replied. I've been ready since the limning, I thought.

“Here we go, then,” I said, applying my tools to her flesh and making the first insertion of ink that would complete her marque. The next came quick and I let myself fall into the familiar rhythm.

I felt the sharp pricks of his tool on my skin, taking that first tap to completing my marque. My thoughts went to who had recently completed their marque and if I knew them well enough that they hadn't shown me yet. Was our friendship not that strong? Or was there something else behind the delay?

As so often before, I fell into a near trance as my body moved on instinct, filling in the bare flesh with color.

The rhythm of the tappers could make one nearly fall asleep. I did the first time I visited, but I've learned since then.

It did not take all that long, her marque really had been close to finished. I set the last bit of ink and then straightened up, setting my tools aside.
“Finished,” I told her. “Congratulations.”

He pulled away and congratulated me. I shifted to look at him. "Thank you." I sat up, grabbing the robe to put it on.

Being that it was her last visit, it never occurred to me I still needed to tell her not to move yet. Gods, have mercy!
“No!” I gasped, the word ending in a groan as I saw how much she’d moved. “The ink isn’t set yet….”

I panicked slightly. After all these visits, I didn't remember to lay there for a few minutes so the ink can set. I seriously hoped that it was set enough. I shifted slow enough not to disturb the ink as much as I had, grateful that I hadn't fully put the robe on. "Sorry..."

“Lay down… slowly,” I said, keeping my tone even as I tried not to show my frustration. “Let me see what damage has been done.”

I seriously hoped that not much damage had been done. I wouldn't like it if after all that work, to have the marque be rejected due to one stupid move. Still, I slowly laid down, trying not to move my shoulders as much as possible so not to disturb it.

I closed my eyes and took a slow breath to calm myself before I moved close to her again and looked at the work I had just done. My fingers touched lightly a few places before I told her, “I need to redo some areas where the ink bled.”

I felt his fingers touch lightly on my back in a few places and hoped that it wasn't as bad as I thought it was, or could have been. "How bad is it?"

“Not the worst I’ve seen, but there are a few areas of damage. Be still while the ink sets and then I will fix them,” I told her, turning to prepare my tools again.
