I wasn’t ready for this.
I had at last reached that decision. It seems odd, I guess. I mean most other novices cannot wait to get to their debut and experience Namaah’s arts. Or maybe it’s different for Heliotropes. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to know what it was like; I simply wasn’t ready for the stress. I’d seen enough of what experienced adepts went through.
It was my conversation with Nathalie that truly brought me to my decision.
It was three weeks before my sixteenth natality and people had begun to ask about my debut. I walked out into the gardens for a breather. The moon was full, so bright that there wasn’t really need for any other form of illumination. There were several secluded spots in the gardens and I found on of my favorites, a bench under a dense willow, which was beside a small pond. One could hear the tree frogs hailing the new warmth of springtime.
I noticed Nathalie resting up against the trunk of the tree. She was beautiful, copper haired with rich brown eyes. It was her fourth year as an adept and had made quite the reputation for herself, though recently she had stopped taking assignations.
“Sorry, didn’t know anyone was here this late,” I said quickly, softly, as a good apology should be.
“Oh no, not at all. Please have a seat, Jourdan,” she responded as sweet and softly as ever. “You cannot sleep either. Worried about your debut.”
I nodded. “I simply don’t think I’m ready. I mean I see the stress people like you have to go through and I don’t know if I want to take that on just yet. I want to be an adept—“
“But you still need a bit more time? I think that’s perfectly understandable. Being a Heliotrope takes a lot of maturity, more so, I think than some other houses. I see no problem with you asking the Doawyne to wait a year.”
Her comment was met by a smile from myself. “I think you right … It seems weird though.”
She shook her head, copper locks falling gracefully around her face. “This is about you, Jourdan. Trust me, I think you’ll be glad you waited.” She smiled and placed a kiss upon my cheek. “A year to build up your strengths, then you’ll be the adept everyone expects you to be. I’ve heard great things about you.”
