"It is certainly wonderful to see you," I added. It was the truth, even if I wished she could have put off her visit until it was safer.

"It's wonderful to see you both as well," I said, smiling at them each in turn. In some ways we were strangers, but on the other hand, we were family, and there would always be a bond between us. "I hate that it's under these circumstances though, and without Cadice, but perhaps we could go back home all together sometime soon and have a visit with all of us together." I knew that Cadice would love that, and honestly, the idea of us all being together at home sounded heavenly to me as well.

I nodded to that. "I think that's a wonderful idea, sister, but not until everything calms down, which it will. It has to." Inwardly I sighed, how could one really know the future of such things? To just go home seemed to be the best thing that anyone could suggest. We had nothing here but pain.

I was glad that Ghislain wanted us to stay put. On the road we would be even more vulnerable to any malicious attempts. Amelie would have been safer if she stayed at home, but now that she was here I would do my damnedest to keep her safe. "It would be nice to see them again," I agreed. "But you're right brother, not until everything calms down."

I could only nod at that, they spoke sense ... the mood in the City was tense, and on the road here it had been just as bad, if not worse. People jumped at shadows and who knew what manner of person could accost us on the road? It was strange that I felt safe in the City, after everything, but perhaps there was safety in numbers.
"Of course, which will hopefully be soon. I'm sure the Crown is doing all they can to apprehend the villain as soon as possible." At least, I certainly hoped so!

"Hopefully," I said, trying to sound more optimistic than I felt. "However, I've decided that we cannot let this get in the way of living life. I'll still go for my daily rides, always armed of course. We should take caution but not be paralyzed by fear and by the past."

"Of course brother. We are Trevalions, after all," I said in a calm voice, looking out the window, at the garden green with spring.

"Life goes on," I murmured, though I'd always hated that phrase, it was so trite. Or 'life is for the living.' They dismissed the dead as if they had never existed and I wouldn't forget my sister that easily.

I gave Amelie a hug. "I wouldn't say that much, sister ... life won't be the same, but we also cannot be defeated."

Platitudes, it was all platitudes that attempted to cover up reality with comforting lies. "Yes, and on that note I'm going to go make sure your room is ready Amelie," I said brusquely as I stood and left. I knew that everyone dealt with their grief in their own way, but Ghislain's way was driving me crazy. So I busied myself, and got away from him as much as possible.

"Thank you, Sophie," I said, watching her go for a moment and then turning back to my brother. "Well, I know it took a tragedy to get me here, but I'm glad I'm here. I've missed you two, and having a big brother." I smiled, and tucked a strand of hair back. "And you're right, we won't be defeated by this."

I smiled back at Amelie, knowing full well that Sophie was fed up with me. It hurt, and I didn't want Amy to be caught up in it. "How about we see to getting you reacquainted with the house?"

“Well, it would just be ‘acquainted’ since this is my first time here,” I said with a gentle laugh. It felt good to share a smile with my brother, after all this time. “It’s hard to believe I’ve never been in the City before, isn’t it?” One would think mother would have wanted us at court, but then again, she did like to have us close.

I nodded and opened the door for her. "It is a little I suppose. I hope that in spite of all the trouble you manage to find some joy here in the city. Attened the fetes, visit the Night Court, do all the things I haven't done here."

"You haven't been to the Night Court?" I asked, then colored because it was quite a personal question. "I mean, it's one of the highlights of the City, I've heard... Also, fetes will be fun, you have to come along and introduce me to everyone who's anyone, promise?" Despite the sadness, I wanted to live a little while I was in the City, and what would be gained by crying into my pillow every night that I was here?

I nodded. "I'll do that, sis! No ... I haven't been to the Night Court yet. Maybe I'll change that soon, we'll see." Really I didn't have much interest in women or sex at that point, for some reason I couldn't quite put my finger on. But if the right girl showed up ... well all that would change. "You'll have fun here I'm sure," I said with a smile.

"I hope so, but even without all of those things, all I really wanted was to spend some time with you and Sophie." It was true, though of course I was excited about being in the City. I stifled a yawn and then grinned at my brother. "And a hot bath, please tell me I have a nice big tub and lots of hot water. And bubbles."

"Well I'll tell the servants and we'll make sure that you get one tonight, and as many nights as you like. " I grinned and looked upwards. "You're rooms probably ready. A maid can be up soon to draw you a bath."
When she said she wanted to spend time with us I could have cried. Sophie would be hard pressed to spend time with me without it becoming a cold argument. But maybe she could, for Amelie's sake. I hoped and prayed so.

"Thank you, Ghislain," I said, impulsively leaning forward to hug him tightly. "I think everything is going to be all right," I whispered, trying to comfort him. Sophie seemed cold and angry, while Ghislain seemed wounded. Perhaps that was what truly drew me here, the family that needed me.
"Perhaps tomorrow we can have lunch together? I know you must be busy, but perhaps you can squeeze me in." I was teasing, but actually I imagined that he was probably quite busy, so I didn't want him to feel like he had to leave everything behind to entertain me.

I hugged her back, thankful for her words. Maybe it was pointless to say something to which you don't know the answer, but it was the fact that it meant someone cared about you that transcended all of that.
"Of course I'll have lunch with you!" I told her. "Is there anything special you want? I can have the cook make just about anything."

"Let's go out," I said, reaching up to unbind my hair in anticipation of my bath. "You can show me some of the nicer places in the City, what do you say?"

I nodded. "We can do that! I'll find the absolute best place in the city and take you there and we'll make sure to get dessert!" I loved seeing my sister happy! In fact I loved the fact that I was seeing her!

"That sounds perfect," I said, imagining that the food in a restuarant in the City would be absolutely amazing, and a wonderful new experience for me. It was just the sort of thing I'd come here for. "It's a date, then, tomorrow for lunch and dessert."

"Indeed! I'm sure you're room and bath are ready now and I'm sure you're tired," I told her, planting a tender kiss on her forehead. "It is so good to have you home sister!"

"It's good to be here," I said, though it was telling that to Ghislain and Sophie this was home, not our estate in Azzalle. It seemed to happen to people that came here, they grew to love it and stayed. I could understand it, it was close to the pulse of the country, it was exciting and beautiful, but I could not imagine a day when it would be home to me. "And now for that bath, I feel grimy from traveling."
I kissed his cheek again, savoring the feeling of holding my brother again, and then headed up to my bath.
