Now that we were at last here I held the door open for her and then went on in after. The place was not crowded yet as it was still early. The greeter approached us and I asked for a table. He went off to procure us one and I looked toward my companion "We are probably lucky we are early or I suspect getting a table might be more than a bit challenging." I smiled a bit "even if I am accompanied by an exceptionally pretty and charming princess."

The inside of the restaurant was lovely and smelled like almost every delicious food that could be imagined and I stepped in confidently. Being in public was never an intimidating thing for me, at least so far in my life- it was just something you did. If you didn't want to always be stuck inside at some point you'd have to get out and about at some point. Even the simplest things here were completely beautiful and I let myself take them in for a moment
"I suppose that it's a good thing we were able to make it out so early then- not that I would have objected to being at my house for a little while longer either since you're so good at coming up with reasons to dally there," I replied with a smile of my own that held just a hint of teasing as I looked back at him. There was a bit of a flush at that for the slight innuendo, but from remembered pleasure rather than anything else. "I'm glad we were able to come out though, this place is fantastic. Is it what you expected?"

I rolled my eyes at that "glad I pass as a passable distraction." I grinned a bit and looked around further "so far it is. We will see how the food is though I cannot imagine it being anything but good. The real issue I find in high end places is the portions tend to be much smaller than I really like." About then they notified us that our table was ready and showed us to it.
Once seated they asked if we would like anything to drink. I asked for a glass of brandy and a glass of water and left Noemi to place her drink order. I then opened a menu "I suspect if we want to come back at a more normal dinning hour at some point we will have to send ahead for reservations."

"Did I give you the impression that you were only passable?" I asked in a playfully teasing tone, biting my lower lip lightly to hold back a laugh. "Because that certainly wasn't my intention at all." It seemed like he'd gotten the joke so I didn't feel too bad but sometimes with men it was hard to tell. But then he didn't seem intent on thinking about it any longer I walked with him to the table and sat down.
The atmosphere was nice, not too quiet or too loud, and I pushed my hair back over my shoulder, then gave the waiter a smile and ordered a glass of light white wine like I'd been drinking earlier that day. Picking up the menu I gave it a glance before I looked back at Matt to watch him for a moment. "Well, if nothing else there are always other places too," I replied in a cheerful tone. "So that's an option. Maybe next time I'll surprise you."

Looking over my menu I chuckled a bit “well I could go into a great description of how much I like your surprises but I fear I might make you blush.” I looked up and peeked over the top of my menu at her. I then turned my gaze back to the choices trying to decide what sounded good for me at this point. Since I still needed to put a bit of weight back on my bones I decided that pasta would be good. Thus I let my gaze shift to that particular section of the menu.
And about then our drinks showed up and I told the wait staff that we needed a bit more time. After their departure I glanced at Noemi “would you like an appetizer while we decide?”

There was a moment where I nearly blushed just from wondering what he would say and a light touch of pink probably came to my cheeks as I laughed lightly. "But see, now I'm curious even if I know I might blush," I replied with a wink and a smile before I looked back at my own menu. It really was a lot of fun being around Matt with the joking and the conversations we'd had so far and that was endearing to me.
Everything looked absolutely delicious and I let my mind wander over the choices for a moment before the drinks were set down and I thanked the waiter with a smile, then picked up my glass and took a small sip. "Appetizers might be nice," I agreed readily, figuring that if it wasn't something he was interested in then he wouldn't have asked anyway. "What sounds good to you?"

I gave a small grin “it generally involves naked sweat streaked bodies and lounges but lets not go there.” Even if I had just gone there, I stole another glance before looking back to my menu and considering. Then I decided let’s see how adventurous she could be “escargot?”

He was right, that did make me blush a bit, but I laughed again and smiled as I glanced back up at him for a moment. "Would it be completely inappropriate if I said that was the kind of answer I was hoping for? But you're right, we can let this conversation go." I couldn't help but tease him a little bit, just to see if I could get a reaction out of him as well. After all, turnabout was fair play.
The suggestion of escargot effectively distracted me and I cocked my head a bit as I considered it. "That's snails, isn't it? I think that could be interesting, but then I like trying new things." Besides, Matt had good taste.

I smiled a bit at her reaction to both parts of the equation. But I did not blush or react badly to the fleshy portion. Indeed it was a compliment after all and gods knew I loved compliments. As to the other portion I dipped my head “yes, it is snails. Of course when I have had them in the past they have been seasoned so much that one could have been eating horse dung and thought it excellent.” I grinned a bit “they serve them in the shell generally and you have a cracker that you use to open them like some sort of perverted walnut.”
And when the wait staff returned I ordered us some escargot and asked that we be given a bit more time to decide on an entrée. I at last sipped my brandy and gave Noemi an amused smile “of course you know what they say shellfish does to the libido.”

I'd just put down my menu, having decided on some sort of mussel dish with vegetables and pasta, while I listened to him talk about the escargot and I laughed lightly at the last bit of his statement. The way he had of saying things always seemed to put me in good spirits and bring a new way of looking at the world that I appreciated a good deal. Maybe others would have a hard time accepting his blunt manner at times but I'd spent a lot of time with male friends in Serenissima and that gave me a higher tolerance for it than some of the other girls I knew, enough that I actually enjoyed when a statement was plainly made.
"Well, since you have such good taste I'll trust you on that," I told him, my eyes flashing slightly in mirth and my smile bright. His statement about shellfish and the libido almost made me flush but I fought it down; eventually he'd find that reaction boring and that was the last thing I wanted. "As I spent fourteen years in an island nation I can say that it's an idea I've heard before, but I don't know if it's true. Who could really say no to that sort of opportunity if the stories are true though?" I teased as I looked at him from beneath my lashes before I took another sip of wine. Not that I thought either of us needed help in that regard, but it would be interesting to see if it was indeed true or not.

I sat my menu aside as well and shook my head. “I dare say that I think most use such legends as a sort of ice breaker. Or may hap as a way to trade double entrances’ that is readily available since I doubt there is much truth in any of the old sayings.” I smiled and took a sip of my drink before adding “and no we do not seem to need any help, but for my part I could always quip that you know what they say about the affect of a beautiful woman on the libido.”
And our appetizer arrived about then and I could smell the heavy garlic on them. There was also a pair of crackers one for each of us. I ordered linguini with mushroom and meat sauce and then looked to Noemi so she could make her order. While she was doing that I picked up one of the escargots and cracked it using the cracker. When I was done I skewered it with a small fork and held it out to her lips as the wait staff departed “here you go tell me what you think.”

"You could make such a quip if you wanted, and I'm sure it would lead to me returning the compliment regarding a handsome gentleman having the same sort of effect," I replied with a smile, setting my wineglass down gently. "And I thank you for the compliment, it's nice to hear that I haven't become less attractive for the loss of the cards or the other circumstances of earlier." In that I was somewhat sincere and I met his gaze for a moment.
When the waiter arrived I waited for Matt to make his order, then gave my own with a polite smile before the person walked away and I watched my companion open the hard little shell with mild interest. When he offered it to me I smiled and pushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear and took the morsel delicately from the fork, covering my mouth slightly with my hand while I chewed as I'd been taught probably since birth. It really was delicious and my expression probably showed it as I swallowed and then brought my hand back down. "It's good, I like it," I said in all honesty, then teased, "Not like a perverted walnut." I knew that he'd been referring to the way they had to be opened but I couldn't resist the chance to try and make him laugh a bit.

I laughed at that and sat down the fork “well I do not know really how else to describe them.” I then picked up another and applied the cracker to it before once more picking up the little fork to extract the tasty morsel. This one I popped into my own mouth and chewed a bit before swallowing and then chasing the bite with a sip of water this time as I alternated between that and my brandy. “Of course when eating such things it is probably best to not think overly hard on exactly just what it is.”
I leaned back and wiped my fingers on the napkin in my lap and waited for our main course to arrive. “Go ahead and show me your technique on extracting one for yourself” I grinned. “I suspect that should prove to be amusing all in its self.” I was being playful of course but most had a bit of difficulty the first time they attempted such a maneuver.

"I think it seems like a pretty apt description in terms of what's involved with opening the things," I replied amusedly, then took another sip of my wine before setting my glass back down while he took a bite for himself. I hadn't had such a fun meal out since I'd come from Serenissima and I was glad to see it was something that could happen here in Terre d'Ange as well. Sometimes people gave certain aspects of this land a certain stuffy air but this wasn't overly formal at all and I was glad.
The suggestion that I should try to open one of these things, playful though it was, brought a smile to my lips and I reached over to lightly pick up the cracker used to open them and looked at it. "I suppose I should play to my audience then," I teased back, knowing that I had a good chance of messing up but not really minding. By the end I'd probably have at least a basic grasp of it and that meant I'd learn something. Picking up one of the snails with the tongs I held it for a moment, then gave it a light squeeze on the handle. Better to start slowly than to shoot the snail across the room, right? Not that anything happened. Laughing slightly I cocked my head and gave Matt a quick bat of my lashes. "Any advice, oh knowing one?"

I tilted my head watching her with a smile playing on my lips. “I would sort of suggest it is like the bed chamber. Not too hard and not to soft tends to be about right. Too soft like you just tried and nothing happens. Too hard and you shoot things across the room.” I actually chuckled a bit then and turned a bit purple trying to not laugh harder as we were in a high end establishment. “Come to think of it that is sort of like the bed chamber as well.” I sipped my brandy then as I watched figuring this should be amusing whatever way it turned out.

The explanation that I got was so funny, especially when taken with the double entendre, that I couldn't help but laugh lightly, biting my lower lip slightly to keep from getting too loud. In the places that were less formal it was generally perfectly fine to show amusement but somehow this restaurant seemed more like the sort that favored quiet and I could at least try to respect that. Even so my eyes flashed with all of the laughter I felt though and I just managed to keep my hand holding the opener steady instead of letting it shake with the giggles.
"I could see how that would be a comparison for many things that might be apt," I said jestingly as I squeezed the opener just a little more firmly and heard the shell start to give a little. "But it's a good analogy. Not too soft, not too hard. That's pretty much perfect." Another small bit of pressure and I could feel the shell break, and I gave Matt a playful wink. Now that it was opened I set the snail down and picked up one of the small forks to scoop out the inside and offered it to Matt with a flush. "You're a good teacher."

“Thank you and you sound just like a woman” I looked up and to the right as I let the jest fly. I watched her as she dealt with the snail and nodded “well that or you are blessed with particularly nimble fingers and a sharp sense of feel. Or perhaps it is a pleasant combination of both.” I leaned forward to accept the morsel into my mouth. Though being the rogue I am I captured her hand while doing so and placed a soft kiss on it before releasing it.

"I should hope I sound just like a woman, considering I am one," I replied in a mirthful tone, eyes flashing in amusement. If I hadn't known he was joking that probably could have come across as somewhat harsh but I didn't think Matt was the kind of person who would really think that way. "And you sound just like a man when you say that so we're even." My tone was still light and playful and I hoped he understood that I was joking back. The kiss on the back of my hand drew another smile from me and I stroked the inside of his wrist for a moment before he released it and then returning my hand to my lap, still tingling slightly at the remembered contact. "As for having nimble fingers that may be the case. It's an idea that's been presented before, though I bet they're not as agile as yours are."

“Mmmm, other than with cards my fingers are not really that skilled” I answered after some thought. “I have spent a bit of time with a bow in my hands though and I suppose that is another form of nimbleness as well.” About then our main course arrived and I leaned back while it was served. Then when asked I told the wait staff that I had everything I needed for the moment. I turned my head and watched them go and observed to Noemi “we will now see how good the staff is here.”
I looked back to her and added “I do not want to be abandoned by wait staff as during a meal there are things you want or need. At the same time so many while working for their tip drive one absolutely insane pestering at every opportunity and that normally happens to be when my mouth is full and I cannot readily answer them.” I smiled and shook my head “the best service I think lies someplace in the middle of the two extremes.”

"I haven't been around much archery myself other than watching my brother practice before he left to join the military but I think it would take a lot of skill," I replied sincerely. Cygnus had left home when I was only eleven but I remembered him trying various things even though Mother and Father had been worried about his career choice. It was something that had made him happy though and that was enough for me, and it still was. Hopefully now that Vicky and I were in Terre d'Ange again he'd be able to visit from time to time.
As the food was set down I watched everything with a smile, then listened to what Matt said and nodded my agreement. He had a good point, though it wasn't a problem I ran into very often since I tended to go to places where the staff was a little too relaxed to do any hovering. "I agree, it can be a little awkward when people are always watching you," I replied. "Or when you have no idea where anyone is." Picking up my napkin I set it on my lap lightly.

I stirred my meal a bit with my fork to distribute the heat. That was one of the nice things about pasta you could mix it up since that was the way it is meant to be eaten. I smiled a bit “well the last of the matters I listed tends to be the issue I run into. It never fails the waiter shows and asks how everything is right when I have my mouth full. Then I find myself trying to swallow and answer at the same time. It is terribly awkward.” I wrapped some of the pasta around my fork and blew on it to cool it before I placed it in my mouth.
It was good and warm and felt filling. I had to say I was quite pleased with this establishment so far. I then carried on the light dinner conversation “of course a lot of it could be I just have bad timing when it comes to such things.” I then reached over and grabbed bread stick out of a basket full of them before offering the basket to Noemi in case she wanted one.

"I've run into that problem a few times myself," I replied sympathetically, taking a small sip of my wine as I waited for my mussels and vegetables cool. It wasn't a heavy dish, but that suited me just fine; I liked seafood and vegetables and thicker foods made me drowsy more than sating my hunger.
When he mentioned having bad luck in any kind of fashion I smiled a bit more widely, giving him a glance before I picked up my fork. "I don't think I could imagine you having bad luck in any other situation so I suppose this would have to be how it manifested," I said in a light tone, then shook my head politely as he offered me the bread basket and took one of the mussels out of its shell put it into my mouth. The food here really was good and I was glad that this was the place he'd picked.

I used the bread stick to help push my meal onto my fork as befitting of proper manners and continued on enjoying my meal and conversation at a leisurely pace. “Well if that is the worst that happens to me I am probably fortunate.” I paused a bit sipping my water this time and then setting the glass back down. “But I fear I am dominating the conversation. Let’s hear a bit a bit about you. You mentioned your sister and just arriving in the City do you care to elaborate on any of it?”

Once I'd swallowed I took a sip of wine and considered his question. "I don't ever mind elaborating on anything, though I should probably warn you that I have a tendency to go on about a topic longer than most people would like me to," I said sincerely, not wanting to bore him but at the same time knowing that if he was going to be annoyed at my habits this would be the time to find out. Besides, my life couldn't really be that boring, could it?
"Well," I continued, not at all shy or hesitant but still trying my best to keep from being completely tedious or babbling. "I moved to Serenissima when I was three and my father went there for diplomatic reasons, so I remember it more clearly than most things about Terre d'Ange. Victoire is seven years older than I am and my brother Cygnus is six years older so I was always the 'baby' of the family and left to do my own whims. Most of the time I'm probably as much about taking up space and finding things to do as everyone else's is."

I listened as I continued eating and nodded. Her description explained a bit about things she had said and that I had noted as well as filled in a few details. I took a sip of my brandy and asked “so what brought you back to the country of your origins at this time?” She may have told me that previously but I could not recall. I was a bit curious considering if her father was still on assignment in Serenissima it sort of left the girls off on their own. Of course they were all the age of majority so I supposed they might indeed just be making their own way in the world.

It seemed like I hadn't managed to bore my dinner companion yet or annoy him and I was cheered by that thought. "My parents always wanted my siblings and I to know where we came from and there were a couple trips back and forth but when things got busy and trouble broke out it became an infrequent thing. Cygnus, my brother, left Serenissima to go into the d'Angeline military when he was sixteen and I haven't seen him much in about six years. Mostly it was Victoire's decision to come here now and I couldn't let her travel alone- and Christien visiting probably convinced her a little too."
It didn't seem odd to me to refer to the Dauphin as a friend and I did so almost with realizing it- after all, he was one, even if he wasn't as close to me as he was to Victoire. After I'd said it I realized that it may not be a very good topic of conversation considering what I knew about Matt so far, but what was said couldn't exactly be unsaid and being tense or uncomfortable about it would only call attention to the situation. "I'm glad we came when we did though, it seems like a nice time to be in the City."

I smiled a bit “ah so that is where Christien has been. He and I used to converse and correspond a bit not to mention keeping each other’s company. Of course I have been a recluse as of late after well the incidents with his sister so I suspect our conversations may not be as pleasant in the future.” I listened a bit more while we ate and then added “it is a nice time to be here. Of course our winters are not horrid either especially when viewed by say Skaldian standards.”
I leaned back a bit and paused in my dinning “do you think you will return to Serenissima or are you planning on staying here?” I was a bit curious considering she had probably spent so little time in country that she likely felt like a stranger here.

Well, at least it didn't seem like I'd ruined the conversation so far and I was exceedingly glad for that and smiled after I'd taken another bite, then picked up my wineglass. "Yes, he was there for a few months, though he and Victoire were generally out and about for most of it," I said cheerfully. "But I hope your friendship with him doesn't change because of the events with his twin. Eventually all of that will wear off and things will go right back to normal." Of course I had no proof of that and I couldn't say for sure one way or the other but that was my hope.
When he asked about whether or not I'd be returning to Serenissima I took a sip and considered the question in an almost playful manner, glancing up at the ceiling and then setting my drink back down. "I think I'll be staying here for awhile. There's a lot to do and see, and many different people to meet, as well as some friends I hope I'll be able to see a few times more," I replied a moment later, smiling a bit more widely and my eyes flashing a bit in sincerity. "It's not as though it's not my home nation too. Why, are you hoping I'll go back soon?"

“I have no idea really so we will see. When one moves that high up the food chain politics becomes involved in all relations. We never were really that close after all I suppose I was more of his drinking companion than anything else.” I stated in response to the topic of Christien. “I suppose though as you say time heals all things one way or another” I smiled a little bit at that particular thought.
She then became a bit coy and flirtatious in regards to the other. That in turn made me smile a bit more broadly and under the table I lightly hooked her ankle with my own. It was a version of holding hands but a bit more discrete and somehow more intimate for the fact. “Actually I very much hope you will stick around a while. I was more curious because I thought Serenissima might seem or at least feel more like home to you considering that is where you have spent most of your life.”

For some reason I got the feeling that continuing to talk about Christien or anything associated with that situation that was being alluded to would get uncomfortable if the conversation continued along those lines so I wasn't at all concerned with letting it drop aside. Besides this may not be the place to bring up such topics anyway, if only because it was a public place.
The other topic was quickly becoming more interesting anyway, and when his ankle brushed across mine and hooked it I brushed my foot back across his leg for a brief moment in acknowledgment. "Oh good, I'd hate to know I was being a pest already," I jested in a light tone, resisting the urge to flush a bit and give away anything. "Even though I spent so much time in Serenissima I was always told that it wasn't really 'home' the way Terre d'Ange was and that kind of gave it a feel of a permanent vacation. Maybe I'm just one of those people who can feel at home almost anywhere. Do you think of the City or your country estate as being more 'home'?"
