Since the fete, I'd given a lot of thought to the woman I'd met there. She was beautiful, vulnerable, and best of all, a Duchesse. I decided to explore the possibilities further, and to that end, I sent her a missive several days after the Queen's memorial:
My lady Bellamont,
I am not sure if you will recall, but we met at the Somerville home at a party not very long ago. I was touched by your kindness, and by our similar circumstances. My daughter and I have been quietly grieving the loss of my wife, and perhaps it would do us both some good to get out of the house and have a visit. If you are amenable, please let me know when it is a good time for us to pay a visit.
Yours,
Denis
I'd decided to include Rochelle in the visit, because she was a sweet child, guileless, just the sort of person to inspire caring and trust. How she had been born of my wife and I was a mystery, for the both of us had devious souls and little in the way of morals, and yet Rochelle was quite the opposite.
I sent the missive with Guy, who himself inspired trust, and hoped for the best.
