I smiled and then turned back to face the counter. "Two ham sandwiches on sourdough bread please, whatever type of cheese you'd recommend." Honestly I wasn't too sure myself as to what I wanted.

I glanced around a bit more as Eric ordered for us, taking in the nuances of the shop. There wasn't much to be said at this point; it was simply a wait until we got our sandwiches.
After a time, the order came up and I put the coin on the counter to pay for the sandwiches. The man behind it smiled and inclined his head, thanking me. I smiled back and nodded, not wanting to have a long, drawn-out conversation about how another shopkeep couldn't understand me.
Handing Eric his sandwich, I grinned. "It's the least I could do to repay you for being my communicator," I said. "Care to eat in here, or go back outside?"

I simply smiled and took the sandwich. "The fresh air was nice. I think we should go there ... if that's alright with you of course."

"Aye, it sounds wonderful to me."
We walked out quietly and, as we got outside, I fell into step beside him once more until we found a soft patch of grass to sit in, under the shade of another large tree.
"I must ask you," I said between bites, "How is it that you understand me so well when none of the merchants and shopkeeps do?"

I considered the question, for it wasn't really an easy one. "Perhaps's it's because I try a bit more than they do. And we've been trained to understand other accents, some of us even earned other languages. Unfortunately I didn't, but it would have been nice."

"Why didn't you?" I inquired, curious. The sandwiches were almost gone by then and I was thirsty. I fleetingly wondered if there was somewhere that sold mead nearby. "You said 'unfortunately' so obviously you wanted to."

"Well I say unfortunately in retrospect. I think it would be a valuable skill now. When I was younger I never really thought anything of it," I explained.

"Ah. What language would learn if you had the chance?" I wondered if he'd get tired of me prying like I was; he was an interesting man. I simply couldn't help my natural nosiness.
"You know, you don't have to answer all these questions," I offered, putting my thoughts to words. "You're welcome to tell me to shut it."

I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm not really certain, just something. And you're fine ... I'm actually used to questions and I think no less of anyone for asking them."
