Name: Roland Zidane
Title: Baron D'Émerllion
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Height: 6"1'
Race: D'Angeline (Eisandrine) / Carthaginian
Home Province: Eisande
Natale: third week of winter
Appearance:
Roland is an interesting mixture of his dark Carthaginian father, and his pale Eisandrine mother. His father gave him his full lips and wide nose, while his mother's blood balanced them out with perfectly formed eyebrows and that certain angle to his cheekbones that marks him as a descendant of Elua's Companions. Roland's skin-colour is a light brown, not nearly as dark as his father but certainly not natively D'Angeline, and it causes people to look twice at this beautiful outsider. Roland's body is trim from his time served in the navy, and he has kept himself in shape since. Though most will never see it, Roland has a nasty scar on his left thigh, and walks stiffly when it snows.
Personality:
Roland is a steady individual, his impulses smoothed out by his navy training, in addition to the years of taunting his received for his dark skin. If he looses his temper however, there is no holding him back, and he can use his intelligence to be very cruel. He's naturally curious, and only tends to smile when it is truly genuine.
History:
Roland's father Tariq was the youngest son of a merchant of Carthage, who visited Marsilikos on his first voyage to learn his father's business. Tariq was entranced by the D'Angeline culture, and soon fell in love with a local girl. Annabelle D'Émerllion was the only child of Baron Leandre D'Émerllion, the lead falconer for Roxanne and then Anna de Merliot. Annabelle had led a rather simple life with her father in the mews until she found love with Tariq, who turned her world upside down.
Tariq and Annabelle had a passionate marriage, having Roland and then Amina only a year later. But it wouldn't last forever. As much as Tariq loved the D'Angeline culture and his beautiful wife, being an outside began to wear on him. D'Angelines have never been known for their tolerance. When Roland was ten, Tariq returned to Carthage with Annabelle's blessing, for she had seen how hard it was on her husband. Tariq has tried to visit frequently since then, but the recent war with Khebbel-im-Akkad has disrupted his latest attempts.
Roland grew up in the Merliot household, friends with everyone including the young Lessandrie, not really understanding that the colour of his skin set him apart. It wasn't until his father left and he began to go out more into Marsilikos that he came to realize that other D'Angelines looked upon him as an outsider. At first this made Roland very angry - and who could really blame him with his father's abandonment so recent? But as Roland went through his teenage years, he gradually came to the realization that he was as D'Angeline as anyone around him, and at the age of 16, enlisted in the navy to prove it.
Roland began his service with the navy during the war with Khebbel-im-Akkad, but was wounded only months into his service in the Battle of Thira. Though the D'Angeline forces won and the naval battle represented the turning point in the war, a splintering mast sent a shard of wood through Roland's thigh. The young man should have died from the injury, as the shard had severed his artery, but he survived through luck and a very skilled chirurgeon. He was sent back to Marsilikos to heal and regain his strength, and though he walked with a limp for over a year after, all that is left of his injury now is an angry-looking scar.
Roland grew up a lot in that battle and the subsequent months of recovery, and when his mother passed, he was more than capable of taking over the barony and her position in the Merliot mews. But now that the war is over and his sister Amina is just as capable to do the work, Roland has headed to the City to explore and learn more about the pull of his D'Angeline blood.
