I turned a page in the book I had decided to read to occupy myself until such time as the Dowayne or the Second summoned me for an assignation, which were few and far between. The sun was obscured behind gray clouds, but there would be no rain today, as it was too hot at present. It was the perfect day to indulge in a little light reading.
I sat, mouthing every word as I read it. My Ch’in accent was a hindrance when it came to pronouncing things in D’Angeline, but I managed as long as I was able to control the speed at which I spoke. This particular tale told of a passionate affaire de coeur between a Valerian adept and her first patron. My fingers softly caressed the page that described their deeply moving collaring ceremony. I wished that I would be blessed with such a man; a man of tenderness and severity, a man of noble bearing if not noble title. Alas, most D’Angeline nobles behaved like wild boars in the assignation chambers in Valerian House.
I needed someone who would accept me, all of me, and so far I had not found what I was looking for.
The sun abruptly peeked out from behind the clouds, extending its golden rays like fingers which slid over my cheek. I winced. I was not well-suited to staying out in the sun, preferring the darkness and the light of candles. “Zut alors!” I cursed, closing my book and running toward Valerian House and the shelter it offered as fast as my legs could carry me.
I did not want to tarry long in the light.
