Second week of Spring, Year two of Sabrina's reign
I had been out doing some shopping for the house and had happened upon a new vendor. He was selling sweets from Illyria and I had bought some, thinking Darien might enjoy them. I sent the other purchases home and headed over to the temple, taking the chance I might catch him with some free time and give him his surprise.
The acolyte I had met at the door informed me that Darien was busy at the moment, but said I was welcome to wait for him in any of the public areas. I thanked her and headed out for the gardens and orchards. I had become a familiar face to many here and in turn had become comfortable enough not to feel out of place in the open spaces.
The gardens were beginning to really fill in and I smiled as I tucked the sweets into my pocket before clasping my hands behind my back as I wandered the pebbled pathway.

It was hard for me to stay grouchy in springtime. Even as a small child, I loved watching young plants push their way out of the soil, ready to open their leaves to the sun. This early into spring, it was cool outside, but my heavy winter robe was more than adequate to keep out the cold.
My feet were another matter entirely. They still ached due to Lady Elise's harebrained scheme that saw everyone roused at dawn for a procession, where I was made to wear shoes that pinched something awful. I had since changed into sandals, but I still found no relief from the pain.
"Think on something else," I muttered as I walked. "Think on something else..." I could hear the birds chirping as they flitted to and fro in search of materials to build their nests. I gradually felt my mind slip away, feeling a momentary surge of pride that I was able to so easily fall into a meditative state. Master Auberon had spent hours attempting to teach me the technique, and all it seemed to accomplish was causing me to fall asleep with boredom.
Wait until he hears how I managed it all by myse--
I collided with someone or something before I could finish the thought, recovering my wits, I noticed that it was a young woman--older than me, certainly, but not as old as some of the nobles who often visited the temple.
"Oh! Excuse me!" I exclaimed, slightly perturbed by how I seemed to have a knack for running into people.

I had been admiring a new addition to the garden when I was suddenly thrown off balance as I was collided into.
Just barely catching myself, I turned from the plant to find a blonde girl standing there apologizing.
"No harm done," I said with a soft smile. I didn't recognize her so I wasn't sure if she was a member of the temple or just visiting as I was.

I found myself returning her smile, secretly relieved that for once someone wasn't snapping at me for being clumsy.
"Oh, well, as long as you aren't hurt--" I began, pausing as I realized that someone would probably admonish me for not being more polite. "I--Do you require any assistance, my lady?" Where have I seen you before?

“Oh, no thank you,” I said, still smiling as I shook my head a little. “I was just admiring how beautiful the gardens are becoming with the warmth returning. If I am interrupting something, or in the way, I apologize.”

I glanced over in the direction she indicated. "It's too early in the season to see any blooms yet." I said, indicating the plot of land with my head. The green shoots were just stubbornly beginning to push their way out of the soil, glistening wet with dew from the early morning. "You probably won't be able to see much for a while, it depends on the flower. The roses like the heat, so they won't be out until late in the season, or early summer, if they're particularly stubborn."
I met her gaze, then just as soon looked away, suddenly shy. "Sorry, I often tend to the gardens, mostly when there aren't a lot of visitors around. I don't understand why the temple doesn't hire more gardeners." I rolled my eyes, imitating Master Auberon's deep intonation: "Work builds character, Adelaide. I'd wager he never had to toil to become a better person." I stopped, realizing that I had an audience and wasn't just muttering to myself. "I-It's not that I don't want to be here!" I amended hastily. "I just wish being an acolyte didn't come with so much work!"

I found myself a little dizzy trying to follow her stream of conversation as she spoke.
"If it wasn't work, then it wouldn't be worth it," I said with a chuckle. "Or at least that is what my father says."
