I'm currently reading "Tarot 101: Mastering the Art of Reading the Cards" by Kim Huggens, and there's this neat little exercise that involves calculating someone's personal cards based on their name, date of birth, etc. I thought it would be a neat idea to try this with our characters!
The way you do this is to use this chart:
A, J, S = 1
B, K, T = 2
C, L, U = 3
D, M, V = 4
E. N, W = 5
F, O, X = 6
G, P, Y = 7
H, Q, Z = 8
I, R = 9
Basically, take the numerical value of each letter of your character's name and add them up. If the number is over 22, add those numbers up until you end up with a single digit number.
Here is an example using my name:
Krystal = 2 + 9 + 7 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 3 = 25
2 + 5 = 7
7 = The Chariot
So my name card is the Chariot
If you end up with a number between 10 - 21, you will actually have two paired cards, because one card can be reduced from the other.
For instance, I did one for Catherine:
Catherine = 3 + 1 + 2 + 8 + 5 + 9 + 9 + 5 + 5 = 47 = 4 + 7 = 11 (Justice + High Priestess) or 1 + 1 = 2 (High Priestess)
Here is the breakdown of the cards and sets:
1 The Magician
2 The High Priestess
3 The Empress
4 The Emperor
5 The Hierophant
6 The Lovers
7 The Chariot
8 Strength
9 The Hermit
10 The Wheel of Fortune + The Magician
11 Justice + The High Priestess
12 The Hanged Man + The Empress
13 Death + The Emperor
14 Temperance + The Hierophant
15 The Devil + The Lovers
16 The Tower + The Chariot
17 The Star + Strength
18 The Moon + The Hermit
19 The Sun + The Wheel of Fortune + The Magician
20 Judgement + The High Priestess
21 The World + The Empress
22 The Fool
Try it and see what cards your characters end up getting!
The book also mentions that since everyone has different names for different areas of their life (nicknames, pet names, etc.) they will have different cards for each name.
This website has interpretations of the sets, for those of you with single cards, just look at the parts that talk about your card: www.tarotschool.com/BirthCards.html
The book also says to practice doing readings for fictional characters, so if anyone wants to ask a question about their character's situation, feel free to do so. I could use the practice!
