She kept quiet, and I respected her silence. Though it left me a lot of time to think, and it was difficult not to think of her when she was sitting across from me, as gorgeous as ever. But I forced my eyes and mind back to the game. I resolved to be strong for her as I moved one of my game pieces.

I moved, jumping and capturing his piece, before I looked at him again. This was the most awful and wonderful thing I had ever been through. He was near me, and it made my heart sing, but it was tearing us both apart.

I felt her eyes on me, but didn't look up until after I had captured two of her men. I met her eyes from the briefest of moments before looking down again. I don't know what she saw in my eyes, but I saw the conflict in hers.

Anyone looking at us now would have thought our being together was a forced, unpleasant thing for us. I wished I was stronger, that I could be with him casually.
I moved a piece and then folded my hands in my lap, staring at them.

"What other games do you like?" I asked, for once the first to break a silence. But she just looked so unhappy, I wanted to get her mind off our little... issue as much as I could.

“I’m learning to play chess,” I told as I moved another piece. “I am enjoying that.”
Before I could say more, a fosterling rushed up to me. “Olivia, Karina wants you to come immediately. There’s a man in her office,” he said. I could tell by the way he said that, man meant patron.
“Thank you Giles,” I said, shooing him away. I looked at Adin, unable to stop the tears that gathered at the corners of my eyes.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “I have to go.”

I reached out and squeezed her hand softly. My heart ached, not because she was going off to see a potential patron, but because she was going off at all. "I understand. Good luck, and take care of yourself. I'll try to come visit again soon," I promised, no matter how foolish it was.

I squeezed his hand, hoping desperately that I was conveying even half of all the things I wanted to say to him.
“Take care of yourself, Adin,” I whispered, then forced myself to get up and go to Karina’s office, though all I felt like doing was weeping.

I watched her leave with what were doubtlessly pitiful eyes. I made myself look back down when she left the room instead of staring after her. Quietly I put the game pieces away and headed back home with a heavy heart.
