"I would like that very much," I said with a little smile. By the gods she was beautiful, her face lit up with a smile. "I've always wanted to tour the other Houses' gardens."

“It will be my pleasure, there are some truly lovely plants out there,” I replied. Before my mind could stray too deeply into thoughts of being with him in the secluded areas of the gardens, I forced myself back to why we had come to such a public area.
“What game shall we play?” I asked with a smile.

"Do you like Alquerque?" I asked, suggesting a straightforward game so that we could spend more time talking. "Or anything you'd like, really." ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alquerque )

“Alquerque sounds perfect,” I said, rising long enough to retrieve a board and pieces. “Black or white?” I asked with a smiled as I set up the board.

"Black," I said, choosing the side to move first. It didn't matter to me, I was far too engrossed in watching her set up the board, her nimble fingers deftly placing the game pieces.

I could feel him watching me and it sent a wave of warmth rolling through me. Ah gods, even just playing a game was going to be difficult.
Once the board was set, I sat back, tucking my leg beneath me and getting comfortable. “Your move,” I said, giving him a happy smile.

I moved my first piece after only a moment of thought. Alquerque was something I played for amusement, I had never spent the time to study strategy or anything like that. "Do you play often?" I asked.

"Not so much any more," I said as I moved my first piece. "When I was younger I had a friend here, Trevor, who loved to play. I haven't played much since he left."

"Did he go to another House?" I asked, capturing one of her tokens.

I captured the token he’d just used to capture one of mine.
“His marque was bought,” I answered.

"Oh, good for him then. Are you still in contact at all?" I asked as I studied the board before capturing another of her pieces.

“No,” I said, shaking my head a little and moving another piece. “I only ever talked to him once more and then his master took him away, to Aragonia I believe.”

"Sorry to hear that," I replied with sympathy. "It's hard to lose a friend, even if they have left to pursue their happiness."

I looked away from the board and at him, meeting his beautiful eyes. “Do you think that would be happiness? Truly?” I asked, curiously. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else or being happy anywhere else.”

Her eyes caught mine and held me trapped for a moment that stretched on forever until I broke contact to look at the board. "No one place or situation is suited for everyone. I have never felt the need to leave Alyssum, but I cannot fault those who pursue their happiness outside of its walls," I answered honestly through my blush. I reached out and capture one of her pieces.

How badly I wanted to reach out and caress his cheek, feeling the warmth of his blush. I resisted though, looking at the board once more.
“That is a very kind way to look at it,” I said, thoughtfully, then captured two of his pieces.

I clearly wasn't paying enough attention to the game, for she captured two of my pieces. I didn't really mind though, the game was just an excuse to spend time with her, and a way to keep us out of trouble. "I try to look on the bright side of things. It doesn't always work, but I do try."

“That’s part of what makes you so wonderful,” I said, smiling. I knew I was going to make him blush again, but I couldn’t help it.

Her compliment caused me to colour even more, my cheeks flaming in a very pleasant way. Not that I could admit that. "Thank you," I whispered, my eyes down and pretending to study the board, a little smile pulling at the corners of my lips.

I could see the way he smiled, just a little, and it made my chest ache. I wanted to lean in, cup his cheek, and kiss those perfect lips. My own lips were tingling with longing.
The impulse was so intense it made me moan, so very softly, barely a sound, but it happened. I bulshed at my lack of control and looked down at my hands.

She made a sound, and I glanced up to see desire written boldly on her face. My breath caught, and I had to lean back in my chair to control the impulse to drag her away to a dark corner where no one would find us.
I took a few cleansing breaths before moving closer again to replace a piece on the board, capturing two of her men. "Do you know many that have left Valerian?" I asked, my voice still a little rough.

“Six,” I answered, though I wasn’t quite sure is that was the correct number. I was struggling to think beyond what I’d seen in his reaction. I closed my eyes and tried to draw a breath, but it was shallow and shaky.

This simply wasn't going to work. We could try to spend time with each other just as friends, but it was always going to be torture. We just wanted each other too much, our bodies reaching for the other. "That's quite a fair number," I said, doing my best to keep my mind on the conversation. It was near useless though.

Behind my closed lids, hot tears burned.
“I’m sorry, Adin,” I said, my voice low enough that only he could hear. “I’m trying to be good, I really am. I just….” My voice caught. “I’m so sorry.”

"Please, don't apologize," I murmured, longing to wrap my arms around her and hold her close until the pain left her face. "It's as much my fault as yours, if not more." I leaned in, resting my elbows against the table. "Don't blame yourself Olivia, please. I couldn't bear it if I made you cry."

“It’s not your fault,” I whispered. “I’m the one who’s not free to be with you.” I opened my eyes, wiping at the tears so they didn’t fall, before I met his gaze. “I wish I someone else so I could be with you.”

"But if you were someone else, you wouldn't be you. And I'm rather... fond of you," I murmured, my chest getting tight from seeing her brush tears away.

“I’m fond of you too,” I whispered. Ah gods, that was the problem.
I drew in a slow, shaky breath, trying to center myself again, then smiled softly at him. “Whose turn is it?”

"Yours," I whispered, watching her lips curl up into a smile. Even as sad as it was, her smile was still beautiful.

Looking at the board once more, I moved a piece, willing to keep playing since it meant he would stay here that much longer.
