I nodded and stood, baby in my arms. I caught Ana's eye to let her know that I was excusing myself. "I will be back in a few minutes if you would like to play with your niece, Henri," I said. "If you'll excuse me..." I followed the maid down the hall to the guest room, where I could nurse Synnove in peace away from all that drama.

It seemed that we were both distracted by the familial drama going on before us, but she spoke up before I did.
"Of course. Take care of yourself Douleur," I said with a soft smile.

I half-turned to Mala when she linked her arm through mine, resting my nose against her hair so that I could breath in her scent. It grounded me again after the whirlwind of emotions I had just controlled. "Thank you Henri," I said to him after a moment. "I'm a very lucky man."

“I will, my lady,” I said, inclining my head to her as I stood. Unobtrusively I slipped out of the room and then out of the house, making my way back to Valerian my mind working the entire way.

I pressed closer to Chris, feeling the tension ease in him just a little. I wanted to take him somewhere private and help him calm himself completely. However, we needed to stay for a bit more, so I just did my best for now.

I watched Douleur go, hoping for my own sake that she'd accept my offer. I was definitely going to need help with the duchy once Jareth and I started to have children, and I knew Douleur had a steady head on her.
I looked back to the family group to find Soleil going off to feed the babe. I followed her out and into what had to be a guest room. "How was it going out there?" I asked.

I chuckled when I heard Ana's voice. I took a seat on a comfortable chaise, and unwrapped the tulle from around my shoulders, loosening my stays slightly in the back to take out my heavy breasts. Synnove latched on right away and began to eat. "It was going well with Malabelle, I think," I said. "I think she will love Synnove as her own daughter." I stroked Synnove's hair idly. "It seems as though Pierre Legard was set on ruining this reception, though. I think he has already upset his brothers, sister, and sister-in-law."

"Family can bring out the best... and the worst in us," I said, sitting down across from her. "I hope you didn't mind that I left you with them, I thought they would be more comfortable without the Shahrizai matriarch hovering."

I watched as Soleil made her way to feed her little one, and I could not wait to meet her. I turned to Christophe with a proud smile. How could I feel anything but?
"You are indeed!" I said, grinning widely. "Love, all around you, varied but all good, genuine love," I said, taking a deep breath. "You deserve it," and then turning my smile on Mala, "you both do."

That was Henri, always upbeat and optimistic. It made me smile. "Yes, she definitely deserves it," I said, kissing Mala on the forehead.

I glanced around and realized that only Henri was left of the others who had been in the room.
“Do you want to go see about Marie?” I asked Christophe. “I think I can entertain Henri for now.”

"Thank you love, I'm sorry. I'll be back as soon as I can," I promised, kissing her lips softly before excusing myself to head upstairs.
I found Marie half in the hall, her head buried in her arms. I scooped her and brought her back into her room, gently sitting her down on the bed. Then I wrapped my arms around her in a hug, just letting her cry.

I watched as Christophe went off to find Marie, and nodded. I figured something must have happened between her and Pierre. Something always seemed to, especially since the invitation for the wedding. It might be harder to reconcile those two than it would be for Christophe. No matter, I turned my attention to Mala with a bright smile.
"Does it feel any different?" I asked, keenly. "Being married?"

I pressed hard against Chris, crying until I had no more tears. My throat was raw and my chest felt like a thousand hot bricks had been laid on it.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I was trying to come down, but then Pierre was there and…”

“He’s so awful,” I said. “He said such hurtful things. I’m so sorry Christophe, if I hadn’t insisted on coming to the City he never would have been here to ruin your wedding day.”

"Oh, I'm not going to let him ruin anything. After all Mala and I have been through, it would take a lot more than Pierre's idiocy to ruin it. And don't you go blaming yourself for this, it's not your fault," I told her, my hand running along her back soothingly. "I'm very glad you came."

"It went so well, I think your presence would only have brightened the mood," I said. "Besides, you were busy talking to Douleur, poor thing." Everyone knew what Douleur had been through.

"Thank you minette, that's the best wedding present I could hope for," I said with a soft smile. I kept stroking her back, knowing she probably still needed a few more minutes to calm down. "I love you too."

"Most everyone. The last I saw, Soleil and Ana were still here. Soleil had just gone off to feed Synnove," I replied. I kept stroking her back, hoping she was getting closer to coming downstairs. I really did think she would perk up once she saw my daughter.

"It would have been a shame," I agreed. "Synnove is such a joy. Even Mala loves her, and you should have seen the look on her face when I told her about Soleil and the pregnancy. I think my little Nova could win anyone over."

"Sort of," I said with a smile. "But in a good way," I grinned. "I just wish that we had gotten to know you before hand. It is sort of sad to come in at teh end when all is said and done. Heck, we did not even get to make you feel nervous about acceptance," I teased, "not that I would have."

I laughed and shook my head. “Saying yes to your brother wasn’t really that hard. We have been through so very much together, there really is nothing left to be nervous about.”
