I’d never thought any parting would be more painful than the ones I’d already been through, leaving Ruskovia and then parting with Sabrina before. There was a permanency to this one that made me feel everything so much more deeply though.
The carriage drew to a stop and I exited, telling them to take my trunk up to my room. Once inside the townhome, I sent a maid to locate Sergei and Fydor and tell them to come to my room as well.
I would talk to them while I packed.
I dismissed the servants that lingered around my trunk, wanting to be alone with my brothers when they arrived. Then I stripped off my uniform, changed into more casual clothes and began packing.

I was in the library, ignoring the book in my lap and brooding over Mercedes when I heard the dull thudding of a door, followed shortly by a flustered looking maid as she scurried in, dropping a tiny curtsy from the doorway.
"Monseiur Sergei, Lord Alexei would like to see you in his rooms."
I frowned, and not so much for her misspeak of our titles. Alexei was here? Snapping the book shut in my lap, I tossed it on a table as I made my way out of the room, long legs gliding me across the floor and down the hall, seeking my eldest brothers room.
"Alexei," I greeted in our native tongue as I came in, catching him as he was.. packing? My frown deepened, utterly confused, but it was obvious something had occurred with him. "What happened?"

“I’m going home,” I answered him in kind. I folded another shirt and slipped it into the bag I would carry with me before looking up at Sergei.
“You can stay if you wish, I’ll not make you or Fydor come with me. If you stay I will make things right with Father and Vlad. I just can’t stay here,” I told him.

I arrived in time to hear Alexei's final words, alerted by one of the maids. My eldest brother was obviously upset and packing. I could think of only one reason. "Sabrina?" I asked softly, looking between Sergei and Alexei.

“Yes,” I said, looking over at Fydor. “It’s always her, isn’t it?”
I sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. “This is the end though, it’s gone too far. I am going home.”

Oh Svaros.
When Fydor entered, I glanced at him, though both our attention was upon Alexei. "What happened, brother?" My brows furrowed; I could only imagine what had occurred to make him react so strongly.

“She had arranged a dinner, in honor of an old friend of hers who had returned to the city,” I answered. “I got there and it was the two of them and she was already hanging all over him. They had dressed to match, she wouldn’t take her hands off of him, and he was doing things such as whispering in her ear. I couldn’t take it. I left after just a couple bites of soup. She followed me and I told her I was leaving. She accused me of not wanting to let her have any friends or do anything but stay under my thumb. Then she walked away.”

"She thought that you would just sit there and take that?" I asked, astonished. Then I shook my head. "I'm sorry brother, I truly am."

I frowned, letting it etch deeply in my features. "She would not last five minutes inside Ruskovia. Even I can tell how you've changed for her, brother, and I've only had the pleasure of seeing you with her a few times."

“I bent as far as I could, but it wasn’t enough, it was never going to be enough,” I said, then sighed deeply. “I can’t stay here and watch her go through the parade of lovers I am certain is to come.” I looked up at them. “You both can stay though; please don’t feel like you have to leave as well.”

I glanced at Sergei, wondering what he thought on staying without our older brother. "I will speak with Lessa, see if we can move our trip up. I was planning on taking her home in the spring to meet Father."

Leave?
I didn't know. I was in an awkward point in time with Mercedes, not knowing if I was coming or going. A moment of hesitation, and I shook my head. "I need to figure some things out completely before I can leave. I'm sorry, Alexei."
I felt like I was letting him down, even if he hadn't made it seem like that at all himself. I looked at Fydor, hoping he'd be able to move up his trip, and Alexei wouldn't have to travel on his own.

“It’s fine,” I told them, standing up and reaching for another shirt. “Neither one of you should have to change your lives because I am leaving on such short notice. I will see you and Lessa when you come to visit, Fydor. And Sergei, I will see you if you come home, but if not then you’ll just have to write twice as often.” I folded the shirt and laid it in my bag with a small smile for my brothers.
“I wish I wasn’t having to leave you both like this,” I said.

I shook my head. "No big brother, do not worry about us. I only wish one of us at least was free to go home with you. Father... well, is Father." I did not envy him of going home after what our ruler would think of as defeat.

"I'll come home at some point," I said, flashing Alexei a quick grin, trying to keep the mood a little lighter, as impossible as it might be. "Sorry Alexei, you can't get rid of me that easily."

“I’ll just have to find another way,” I said, smiling a little ruefully at Sergei. “I’m going to finish packing then try to get a little sleep before I leave. I’ll be gone by dawn.”
