Leaning in, I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her to me. “I love you, Avive.”

I returned his embrace. "I love you too."

I kissed the top of her head and then released her, settling back into my seat. “Your room is still as you left it,” I told her with a smile.

"Thank you," I said. "I should probably go send for my things."

“Is there anything special you’d like?” I asked. “For dinner or breakfast perhaps?”

"Nothing, really," I said. "Don't go out of your way for me, you're the one who needs taking care of right now."

“Taking care of you helps, my dear,” I said, smiling. “And it won’t be going out of my way.”

He would be a wonderful husband, I thought to myself, the tragedy of the situation washing over me. "Then surprise me," I said, standing up. "I'll just be a moment."

“And I will go speak to the staff and arrange things,” I said, rising as well.

I smiled, before walking out of the den and to the library. I penned a note to Justin explaining the situation and that I'd be away for a few days, and that Alain and I were reconciled, and that I loved him (Justin) very much. The second note I penned was to my chambermaid, instructing her in what to send in my trunk. Walking out into the foyer, I found my old nemesis and bodyguard, Robert standing there. "Hello Robert," I said, smiling affectionately. "Will you see that these get delivered to House Rocaille?"
"I will, my lady," he said.
"Thank you," I said, before going back to the den to wait for Alain.

I went to the kitchen and spook to cook, arranging for a dinner of roasted duck and candied root vegetables. I asked her to prepare something decadent for dessert as well. I gave her funds to restock all the pantries too, since we were both going to be here for a bit.
Finished, I returned to the den to see Avive there. “All arranged,” I said, smiling.

"That's good," I said. "Why don't we take a short walk around the block? The fresh air will do you good."

“You know, that sound lovely,” I said, smiling and offering her my arm.

I took his arm and we went to the foyer, where a servant fetched our cloaks. "It's a bit cold, but refreshing outside," I said.

I held her cloak for her. “It’s warm here compared to the estate,” I said, chuckling. “The snows have already come.”

"Do you think it will snow here?" I asked. "I hope it will."

“It should, but it is not the same type of snow like we get at home,” I answered as we left the drive and turned onto the sidewalk. “It’s wetter and doesn’t build like at home, there’s just too much heat from all the homes and people.”

I frowned. "The poor children," I said, "to never be able to build a snowman."

I nodded. "We've set a date," I said. "We're going to have the wedding in Siovale the first week of spring."

"At Justin's estate," I said. "You'll be in my wedding party, won't you?" I was hoping it wouldn't be too sensitive, but I really did want him to be in my wedding.

My heart clenched, thinking about how Jess and I could have been arranging our marriage around the same time, letting loved ones make one trip for both.
“Of course, love,” I said, smiling at her softly. “I would be honored.”

Releasing him, I took his arm so we could walk again. "It'll be small, just friends, family, and a few of the Siovalese peerage," I said.
