“How are your classes going?” I asked, truly interested in her life. It was criminal that I had let her drift so far apart.

"They're going well," I said. "I ended up retaking the ones I'd planned to take in the summer. After such a long illness, I was never going to be able to catch up, so I did them over. I'll be taking some more in the spring."

“Have you decided on a course of study?” I asked.

I shook my head. "I like art," I said. "But I don't know if I like it enough to pursue it for many years. Literature is interesting too. I'm taking a maths course soon, so we'll see if I like that."

I chuckled and reached out, caressing her hair softly. “It is good to take your time. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.”

I leaned over to embrace him. I knew I needed to be strong for him, but the tears were coming. "I'm so sorry we fought, Alain," I said, trying not to sob. "I've missed you so much."

“I’ve missed you too, sweetheart,” I said, wrapping my arms around her and drawing her closer to me. “I love you, Avive.”

I kissed the top of her hair and squeezed her tighter. "I am so sorry for fighting with you,' I whispered.

"It's in the past now," I replied softly. "I know you care about me, you were just trying to protect me." I moved to look into his eyes. "But I'm here now, I'm here now for you."

“And you will never know how much it means to me that you are here,” I said, smiling tenderly at her.
The food arrived and I motioned for it to be set on the table in front of us, and then we were alone again. “You should eat,” I told her.

"So should you," I replied. "I'll tell you what, for every two bites I eat, you have to eat one." I gave him what I tried to make a stern look, but it came out affectionate, and worried. "Just try."

I chuckled softly, raising my hands in defeat. “I will eat, without having to count bites,” I said.

I sighed with relief. "Good." Putting a bit of cheese and meat on a piece of bread, a small one, I handed it to him, before making myself a larger sandwich.

“Thank you,” I said, taking the sandwich and having a bite. It tasted better than I would have thought and I found myself suddenly quite hungry.

I started on my own sandwich voraciously, though I kept an eye on Alain to make sure he actually ate. I sighed with relief as he began. "I told you you were hungry," I said.

“Yes you did,” I said, chuckling again as I made myself another, bigger, sandwich. “I know, I should just listen to you.”

“Just most?” I teased in return, flashing her a grin before taking a good sized bite out of the new sandwich.

I nodded. "I got some questions wrong in my exams," I said, eyes twinkling.

“They must have been graded incorrectly,” I replied between bites. Now that I was eating, I was ravenous.

I laughed, finishing my sandwich and preparing another one. For a moment, it was just like old times, when I was a green girl in the city and Alain was a carefree playboy. Now I was soon to be married and Alain was mourning the loss of his love. The thought was sobering.
