I had vastly enjoyed cousin Naia's natality fete, and going home with my little Valerian had really made my night. It had been a week since then, however, and now I found myself paying a visit to one of my favorite places. Valerian House, of course.
As I stood in the reception room, waiting for the Dowayne to return with the adept she picked for me, I stared at the wall, now and again slapping my riding crop into the palm of my right hand.

When Trinette herself showed up at my door, I was flabbergasted. Normally, a fosterling was sent to fetch adepts. But the look on her face told me this was no ordinary client, and when we arrived at the reception room, I could see why. A tall, statuesque Shahrizai woman with a riding crop was there, and I cast my eyes down right away as Trinette asked the woman if I was suitable.

I spun when the Dowayne returned, and when I got a good look at the adept she had chosen, a smile flitted around my lips, and I nodded. "She'll do very well."
I crossed the room to stand in front of the girl, raising my hand to smooth it over her midnight dark hair. I rather liked that it was nearly a match for my own. I glanced at the Dowayne out of the corner of my eye, "Quite an excellent choice."

"Thank you, my lady," said Trinette. "If you'll just step into my office, we can sign the contract. Come, Avrielle." I followed obediently.

I nodded, and let my hand fall from the girl's hair. As I followed Trinette into her office to take care of the contract, I imagined that this would be the perfect way to end a day spent leaning over a desk, writing poetry.

Trinette held out a quill and I accepted it, signing my name to the bottom of the contract. When I was done, I offered it to the patron, eyes lowered.

I took the quill from the shy little adept, and signed my name to the contract. That done, I handed it back to the Dowayne.
Then I turned to give Avrielle another look, and a sweet smile grew across my face.

Flicking my eyes up, I saw her grinning at me, like a cat at her prey. It made me shudder as I walked to the door. "If my lady would please follow me," I said.

From the look the girl gave me, and the shudder that followed, I imagined that she must either be highly anticipating our coming encounter, or terrified of it. The thought of the former made me smile even more, while the thought of the latter... made me smile even more.
As I followed her out of the office and down the hall, I played out a scenario in my mind, going over what my first moves would be.
