The carriage stopped and I stepped out, paying the driver and then offering Sophie my hand to help her down. I could feel myself stirring with desire.

I took his hand silently, though the way he was looking at me made me smile. Tonight, it seemed, was a reward for both our patience. I looked around as I stepped down, taking in the boarding house. It wasn't fancy, but it was well-maintained.

Once she was down, I shifted so her hand was on my arm and led her inside.
“I’d offer you a tour, but there’s nothing really to see,” I said with a chuckle as we began up the stairs.

"That's alright, I'm not really much in the mood for a tour," I told him with a little grin.

“Oh good,” I said, flashing her a grin as we turned the corner at the landing and I led her to my room.
“Welcome to my home away from home,” I said, chuckling as I unlocked the door and held it open for her.

"Thank you," I replied, flashing him a smile as I passed him. "How do you like living here?" I asked as I looked around.

“Well enough,” I said, shrugging a little. “It’s clean and I have my privacy.” I set my accessories aside.
“I have some wine, would you like a glass?”

"Please, that would be very nice," I replied with a smile. I thought about moving into a place like this to escape my brother. I wouldn't, but the fantasy could be entertained.

“Red or white?” I asked as I went to the little cabinet where I kept my few bottles of liquor and some food around for when I wanted to eat but didn’t want to leave the room.

"Red please," I replied, wandering the room a little, looking around as I took the pins out of my hair and shook it out.

Opening the cabinet, I poured two glasses of Namarese red. Putting the bottle back, I carried the glasses over to where she was.
“Here you go,” I said, smiling and handing her one of the glasses.

"Thank you," I said, toasting him with my glass before taking a sip. "Your tree looks as nice here as it did in the store."

“Thank you,” I said, smiling at the statue where it stood on a little table near the window. “I’ve moved it to several different places, but I think that might be the right one.”

"Does it still feel strange to own it?" I asked.

“No,” I said after a moment’s thought, shaking my head a little. “It feels as if it’s been mine for a very long time. What feels strange is not having found the right spot for it yet. It’s almost as if I brought it with me and am just trying to fit it into my new surroundings.”
