“I’m not sure, really,” I admitted. “I was told he was coming here to join the guard. It is common though that if a person exhibits certain traits they may be presented to the Dowayne of one of the Houses to see if they would be suitable.”

"Oh," I said, not sure what else to say for a moment. "I'm sorry, if I'm asking silly questions. I just... don't really understand the Night Court." Oh please, don't let her think less of me!

“They aren’t silly questions at all,” I assured him with a smile. “How are you to find out unless you ask? I don’t know much about the Night Court, but I will be happy to answer what I can. I’m certain Christophe could tell you more if you want.”

Her smile let me relax again. I had only just met her, but I really wanted her to think well of me. "Do many families have their children grow up to become adepts?"

“I don’t know for certain,” I answered, shaking my head slightly. “I could ask if you’d like.”

I shook my head. "It's alright. I met one of the Seconds at a fete, I was just... not comfortable asking questions right there. I should speak to her though, and not badger you with such things."

A surprising surge of jealousy filled me at the idea of him with an adept, a Second none the less.
“Yes, that would be a good person to speak with about the Night Court,” I agreed, looking down at the ground as we walked, trying to compose myself.

We walked for a moment in silence, and I snuck a glance at her. "Did I say something wrong?" I asked tentatively, not really sure if she was angry at me.

“Oh, no,” I said, blushing even as I shook my head, looking at him again. I had been caught and I didn’t know how to explain what I’d felt without sounding a fool.
“I’m sorry. I just… I didn’t know you knew any adepts. They would be much better at answering your questions. I don’t seem to be able to give you any answers.”

"I don't really know her, I just met her," I said, then had to stop myself. "Sorry, that sounded really dumb. I just mean... There aren't very many people..." I cleared my throat and looked down. "Never mind."

“It didn’t sound dumb,” I told him. “I know what you mean, there is a difference.” I reached out and touched his arm gently. “I am sorry I acted so poorly. I just… I got jealous,” I admitted.”

I opened my mouth to ask why?, and then closed it again.
"You don't have to be," I said quietly.

I glanced at him, not daring to hope he meant what I hoped he meant.
“Thank you,” I said softly. I wanted to take his hand again; I so wanted to touch him again.
Suddenly I looked around though and realized we had just walked past Christophe’s house.
“Oh,” I said, stopping. “We’re here… I mean, that’s it.” I pointed to the house we had just passed.

It seemed she was as new to the capital as I, as we walked past her brother's house before she recognized it. We turned around and headed up the drive to the front door. "Thank you, for a very nice afternoon," I told her with a smile, coming to a stop outside

I wanted to drag my feet as we moved up the walkway; I wasn’t ready to be apart from him yet. I wished this were my home, or at least our family’s home, then I could invite him in for tea or even a glass of water. It wasn’t my place to be inviting guests into Malabelle’s house though.
“You’re welcome,” I said, smiling softly and trying to keep my unhappiness at leaving him from showing. “Thank you too. It was an amazing afternoon. Thank you for everything.”

"It was my pleasure," I replied, and meant every word of the standard reply. I stood on her stoop and didn't want to leave. I wanted to wait right here until the next time she would see me. Surely they wouldn't miss me up at the palace, right? Damn...
"I'll write you soon," I said, though the promise didn't seem like enough. I wanted to do more than pen her a letter. "And we can go exploring."

The thought of a letter from him was only overshadowed by the thought of seeing him again.
“I am looking forward to both, very much,” I said, smiling happily. Knowing that as much as I wanted to, we couldn’t stand here forever, I added. “Until then.”
Opening the door, I stepped inside, turning to smile at him one more time before closing the door softly.

I drank her in until the wooden barrier broke my gaze. Then I shook myself, trying to focus once more, and headed back up to the palace. One thing was for sure. I wasn't going to forget about little Marie anytime soon, especially not now.
