“Thank you,” I said, flashing him a smile and then stepping inside.
It was like no place I’d ever seen and for a moment I was nearly overwhelmed. I didn’t know where to look first or where to go, so I found myself looking for Ferris, for the safety of him.

The pub was loud and noisy, reminiscent of the hall at Bryn Gorrydum when we had visitors. And we always seemed to have visitors. I unbelted my sword and hung it on the hooks in the wall provided, nodding to a man near the door that I recognized from our arrival guard. Marie looked a little overwhelmed, so I went to her, bending my head to speak closer to her ear. "Would you like a table, or would you like to sit at the bar?"

His breath washed across my skin as he spoke and for an instant I thought my knees might give way. Oh gods... I had never felt anything like that before.
"Whicheve you'd prefer," I said, hoping the noise of the room covered the tremble in my voice. I glanced up at him, realizing just how handsome he was, even more so than I had thought before.

She looked up at me, her big blue eyes so lost and beautiful all at once, and I wished very much that we hadn't just met and that I had any sort of courage when it came to women. For I would have very much liked to lean in that little bit further and press my lips to hers. Instead I nodded at her reply. "Let's see if we can find a table," I said, thinking it would be more comfortable for her if she had a little space of her own. I began to lead her through the pub, but it was busy enough and she had looked lost enough that I turned after a moment and caught her hand in mine to make sure we weren't separated.
We didn't end up getting an entire table, but I did find us space for two on a bench at the end of one. The other occupants at the table weren't the rowdy sort, and the noise wasn't quite so pressing over here. The downside of course was that I had to let go of her hand. "I'll go and get us drinks. Will you be alright here?" I asked her.

He suggested a table and I nodded, still a little caught in how his breath on my skin had made me feel. He began to lead me through the crowd and I felt a flash of panic that I was going to lose sight of him, but then he turned and took my hand. It had the effect of not only keeping me close to him, but distracting me from everything else going on around us. All I could think of was the feel of his strong hand holding mine. I didn't even notice at first when he found us a seat.
"Yes, I think so," I said, glancing around as I tried to hide just how sad I was at losing the touch of his hand.

I nodded. "I'll be right back," I said. I was half way to the bar before I realized that I hadn't asked what she had wanted.
Idiot. I didn't go back though, the faster I got back with something for the two of us to drink, the less idiotic I'd feel. I returned with ale for the both of us, and a small glass of uisige. I didn't know if she'd like it, but I wanted to offer her a taste. "Here we are," I said to her with a small smile, sitting beside her.

If only so he wouldn’t feel me staring, I looked around the room while he was getting drinks. I wondered how closely this mirrored his home.
He returned, and I couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you,” I said, turning just slightly so that I was facing him a little. I recognized the ale, but was unsure what else he had brought.
“What is that?” I asked curiously, pointing to the other beverage.

"Uisige," I replied, arranging it so that the glass lay between the two of us. I had to do something with my hands or else get lost in her smile. "It's a specialty of my country. Not everyone likes it though, so I only got the one. Would you like to try?"

I looked from the glass to his face even as I was torn. I was afraid of making a fool of myself if I didn’t like it, but I was also afraid of him thinking me a coward and weak.
I searched his eyes for just a moment, and finally it was the fact that I just knew I could trust him that decided me.
“Yes, I’ll try,” I said, smiling again. My hand went to the glass, my fingers brushing his and making my heart skip. “Do you sip it?”

I was nearly distracted by the touch of her fingers against mine enough that I missed her question. "Yes," I replied. "I should warn you, some find it strong."

Nodding, I took the glass and raised it to my lips. Now that I had decided on it, I wasn’t going to turn back.
Putting the glass to my lips, I took a small sip and just barely managed not to cough. It burned like fire across my tongue and down my throat.
“Camael’s sword!” I swore softly as I blinked and then looked up at him. “Yes, that is strong.”

You could see it on her face, she wasn't sure if it was such a good idea. But she had the courage to take a sip regardless, and it made me think better of her. "Too strong?" I inquired with a little grin.

“A bit perhaps,” I said. I nearly gasped as the wave of warmth ht me, making my head spin slightly.
“Oh my,” I added, my hand reaching out to steady myself and finding his arm instead of the table.

"Steady there," I said, my hand holding hers. "Are you alright?" I was concerned, I hadn't seen anyone react quite like that when confronted with uisige.

“Oh…yes,” I said, laughing a little with embarrassment. “It just made me warm and a little dizzy.” I would have blushed but my cheeks were already warm.

"As long as I didn't poison you or anything strange," I said with a little smile. I didn't seem to want to let go of her hand.

His words made me chuckle, the sound ending in a little hiccup. That only made me giggle again.
“No poison,” I said, squeezing his hand slightly.

She squeezed my hand, and it made my cheeks heat. "Good," I replied. I squeezed her hand back and then made myself let go of her.

His hand left mine and a wave of coldness washed up my arm and through me. I realized suddenly what a spectacle I must be making of myself and blushed deeply.
Pushing the glass closer to him, I let go and then folded my hands in my lap. “I think perhaps you should finish it. I don’t think it’s right for me,” I said.

"Hopefully you'll enjoy the ale more, and I haven't completely messed up in getting you a drink," I said with a little self-conscious smile. I picked up the glass she pushed my way and took a sip. It was almost as if I could taste her as I put the rim to my lips.

The smile on his lips made my heart clench and I knew then that no matter what I was going to finish the ale. I felt an ache inside me to see him really smile again.
“I’m sure it’s wonderful,” I said, trying to be reassuring. “It’s just that I haven’t tried many new things.” I took a sip of ale, and it was indeed good. I smiled at him, letting him see that I honestly liked it.

She smiled at me after taking a sip of her ale, and I was relieved. I wanted her to enjoy herself, not have to be brave all the time because I suggested new things. I smiled back, and took another sip of the uisige. "What has been your favourite new thing so far?" I asked her.

Being here with you
"I found employment and I like being able to earn my own way, even a little bit," I told him. "My family's lands aren't large and there was always just enough to make due. I like knowing that I am less of a burden to my father and our farm."

"I doubt very much that you'd be a burden to anyone," I told her without thinking, the words coming from my heart. I blinked, realizing that my mouth had run away with me, and looked down. "Where do you work?"

I flushed with pleasure at his words, my gaze dropping for a moment.
“Shahrizai and Sons right now. I clean up a few times a week after the store closes,” I answered. “It’s not much, but it’s a start.”

"Do you intend to find more work?" I asked, too interested in her to give into my embarrassment. "You could have some of mine," I offered jestingly. "If I have to deal with one more courtier today thinking he can fleece me for everything I own, I might skewer him."

I chuckled at his words. “I don’t know that I’d be any good at keeping courtiers away from you,” I said with a smile. “I do plan to look for more work though. I am hoping to find enough employment that I can stay here after my brother’s wedding. If I can’t, then my oldest brother and my father will like insist I return home.”

She spoke so fondly of Camlach, and yet did not want to return. Perhaps it was the people and not the place keeping her away. "If you have the determination, I have no doubt that you'll find more."

My smile grew even as I blushed softly again. “Thank you,” I said. “I do hope you’re right.” I took another sip of ale. I wished he would take my hand again; it had been so very nice.
“What is your favorite new thing since you’ve been in the City?” I asked, wanting very much to know more about him.

I could have lied, but I wasn't very good at it. "Sharing candy with you."
