It was just another day. Or, that's how it started out. My brothers and I had gone to have lunch with our cousins in the Palace, and once that was over, we all decided to go down to the sea, something we did often.
We stopped back at home briefly, to ask Loralie if she wanted to join us. She declined, however, and so Daniau and Jean went off to their rooms to retrieve their wooden practice swords. Mother had insisted we take an additional footman with us, and after my brothers returned, we set off, Ranald in tow.
We went down to our favorite spot, a stretch of sandy beach where our family often picnicked. Ranald took up his post, while my brothers stripped out of their shirts and shoes, then began to spar. I, like my brothers, took off my stockings and shoes, and, raising my skirts a bit, went to walk on the wet sand, just at the water's edge.
It was peaceful today, which suited me well, and I was happy to be out in the fresh air. I made my way down the beach to a cluster of rocks, where I took up a seat at the edge of a tide pool, and watched the colorful little fish dart among the plants. Nearby, my brothers were still sparring, and I watched them for a moment, then went back to looking at the sea life.
Several minutes later, I looked up again, and now Daniau and Jean were arguing. I sighed, it ever turned out so, when their tempers clashed. Stepping down from my perch, I quickly made my way to where they were standing, almost yelling now, and stepped in between them, one hand on each of their chests.
Looking first at Daniau, I frowned and shook my head, "Tell me what happened? Or, no wait, I think I can guess." I turned my frown on Jean, and shook a finger in his face, "What did you say now, little brother?" Jean was glaring at Daniau still, his mouth clamped shut. I knew I wasn't likely to get an answer from him, so I turned back to Daniau, "Well? You know he always thinks he has to impress you with big words." I gave him a questioning look, one eyebrow raised. I tsked under my breath, and his face took on a sheepish look. Sighing, I tsked again, then patted Daniau's hand. "I know."
Turning back to Jean again, I gave him a look, the same one which had always worked before, and his face, too, took on an apologetic expression. Stepping back so I could look at both of them, I smiled, "Show me some brotherly love, now."
I chuckled, glad I had been able to easily diffuse the disagreement. It had always been my part, to act the peacemaker, and I was good at it. My smile had made them both smile in turn, and they each wrapped an arm around my waist, then followed along beside me, back to the tide pool.
