If I hadn't seen her hand coming in my peripheral vision, my reaction might have been different. My sword was never far from my reach. As it was, my thumb came up to hold her smallest finger for a brief moment. "Thank you," I murmured, my thanks more than just for the promise, but also for listening without pushing or judging. And then I marveled over how small and delicate her hands were before I became aware that my thumb had rested against her skin for longer than I had intended and it fell away.

A jolt moved through me when his thumb caught my little finger. I realized what I had done, but more than that the touch of his thumb caused a stirring deep inside me. When his thumb fell away, my heart stuttered back to life and I drew in a breath. I blushed so deeply my entire body tingled with it and I drew my hand back. I could still feel the touch of his thumb.
I struggled to find something to say and was coming up with nothing. Finally I remembered the candy. “Would you like another?” I asked, picking up the box with the last two pieces in it.

For a moment I was amazed. She blushed from my touch. She blushed from my touch. Luckily we both needed a moment to gather our wits, it wasn't just me like normal.
"Yes thank you," I replied, taking the second last chocolate, fingers brushing hers again as I reached into the box. We had touched with the last two candies as well, but now it sent little tingles up my arm. I wondered if she felt it too. "I must ask, shall I continue to think of you as the generous flower girl, or might I get your name along with this candy?"

Now, my entire hand was tingling from the brush of his fingers on mine. My heart was beating faster than normal in my chest and my entire body felt warm.
“Marie,” I told him, glancing at him quickly and then looking away. “Marie Legard.” I took the last candy and set the empty box down. “I don’t know your name either.”

"Ferris mab Eideann. It is very nice to meet you Marie," I said and meant it. And then I ventured to give her a compliment. I was never very good at them, but at least this was truthful. "You have a beautiful name."

A blush washed across my skin once more, though this one was soft and sprang of pleasure.
“Thank you, Ferris,” I said, smiling softly again. I hoped I wasn’t butchering the pronunciation of his name.

"And where would I send a letter to you?" I asked, pushing my luck. But by the Boar she was pretty. In Bryn Gorrydum it would be easy to find her, but the task in the D'Angeline capital was much more daunting.

I was so shocked by the idea that he might want to send me a letter that I couldn’t think of any answer but the truth.
“I am staying at the home of my brother’s fiancé, Malabelle Shahrizai, in the Western Borough,” I answered. Would he really send me a letter? Me? I could feel the chocolate melting against my fingers and popped the candy into my mouth before it was ruined. It gave me an excuse not to speak for a moment, to gather my thoughts.
It didn’t really help.
“Would you really? Send me a letter that is?” I asked, feeling myself blush again as I asked and sounded like a fool. “I mean…it’s just… I’ve never had a letter from someone I wasn’t related to.”

Excellent. Maybe I could screw my courage up and invite her out somewhere in the future. I was smiling slightly as I ate my chocolate, biting in to find a currant. At her question, I looked down, a little embarrassed. "I was thinking I would. I am not much of a writer, but I thought you might... might wish to share a meal with me sometime. Or something. But if you don't wish to, you need only say." Damn damn damn...

His answer made my spirits soar and I felt a smile spread across my lips. A very happy smile.
'I would like that," I told him. "I'd like that very much."

Relief swept through me, followed shortly by excitement. "Oh good," I said with a small grin. "I will be sure to send you a letter then."

“I look forward to hearing from you,” I told him, still smiling. There was an odd but lovely fluttering in my belly, something I had never experienced before. All I knew was the thought of spending more time with him made me very happy.

And then, because everything was working so well, I tried one more thing. Later I wouldn't know how I did it, this wasn't like me. "I do not know this area, do you know somewhere to get something to drink?" I asked. "I would like it if you joined me as well, if you have the time."

“I have the time,” I said, smiling even wider f that was even possible. I looked up and around, trying to think of any places that I knew of.
“I know of a tea shoppe that is close, and also a tavern nearby,” I said, looking back at him. “What sort of drink would you like?”

The Fates were with me today, and my eyes ran over her face as she looking about thinking. "I am not sure how good I would be with a tea cup, but I would try if that's what you would prefer," I said, more than willing to be accommodating as I was thanking my lucky stars.

“The tavern is fine with me,” I replied with a little chuckle. A thought struck me and I almost gasped. “Oh… I just remembered. There’s an Alban themed tavern not far from where I work. I’ve never been there, but we could go there if you’d like.”

She started and I tensed, but it was only an idea that had struck her so I forced myself to relax again. "I had heard that there was an Alban pub in the City. I would certainly like to go there."

"Then that is where we should go," I said, smiling. I couldn't stop smiling. This all seemed like a dream.
"It's just down that way," I told him, indicating the Temple District.

I nodded and rose. Then I paused, looking at her. "I'm sorry, do I offer you an arm? I don't know all the details of D'Angeline social niceties yet. I have a hard enough time with my own."

I blushed at the idea of taking his arm, of being that close to him.
“It’s up to you,” I said as I rose. “It’s not required, but you could offer it if you liked. I’m from a place with less of the niceties than here in the City, so I am not exactly sure of the procedure, but that is what sounds right to me.”

I nodded at her reply, then offered my left arm. I had to force myself not to worry, Camlach was known for its stout warriors and brave women. She should know not to foul up my sword.

I flashed him a smile of pure happiness and then took his arm. I made sure not to stand too close and tangle my skirts in his sword, while I also tried not to let myself get lost in the rush that went through me as I touched so much of him. It was just his arm, and just part of his arm at that, but I felt a blush wash across my skin and my heart skipped a beat or two.

She smiled at me, and I immediately knew that I had made the right choice. She really was so pretty when she smiled, as radiant and warm as the sun. Her hand was an unusual touch on my arm, and I realized then that she could be quite the distraction if I didn't keep my mind focused on the world that wasn't Marie Legard.
I started us down the road she had pointed out. We walked in silence for a moment before that I realized that she might become bored. "What is your favourite part of the City so far Marie?" I asked. I was not much of a talker myself, but I was more than happy to listen to her.

As we walked, it felt as if my feet weren’t really touching the ground. I felt light and at the same time very aware of my body. I realized I had never felt so feminine in my life.
“I like the parks, but I think that it’s because there are times when as much as I like the city it gets to be too pressing and I need open space,” I answered with a chuckle. “I like the shops too, but that’s mostly because I have never seen so many different things on display. The town near the estate had only one store that sold general items and those were mostly items for the farms. I still find myself amazed by something new every day.” I glanced at him, hoping I wasn’t sounding like too much of a country fool. “What is your favorite part, Ferris?”

Her voice was a melody, rising and falling with each sentence. I almost missed her question, for I was concentrating too hard on trying to pay attention to our surroundings while still indulging in her speech. I wasn't having much luck judging the two.
"Oh, um... I think my favourite part would be the life in the City. I'm not used to the bustle yet, but everyone and everything here is so full of energy and life."

"Do you go out walking late? By yourself?" I asked. Then I realized how silly that must have sounded. "I mean...I just wouldn't have thought of that, but I can see how that might be nice." I glanced down, catching my bottom lip between my teeth as I chided myself.

I glanced at her to see her biting her lip, though I didn't know why. "It helps clear my mind," I replied. Especially after the dreams.

"I can understand that," I said, still trying to keep myself from sounding a fool again. I liked Ferris and I really didn't want him to think me nothing but a silly girl.
"Back on the farm I would slip out at night and go sit by the pond. It was so peaceful. There were times when I felt like I was the only person alive for hundreds of miles."
