Father was busy with matters that he would not let me attend and my mother had sisters to attend too. So, I was able to leave without anyone trying to stop me. It was early and I was glad to have an entire day to myself.
I decided to first stop by Shahrizai and Sons to buy a few odd items that were hard to find elsewhere. I also liked to spend money at shops owned by family if possible. Aramis was not a close cousin by blood, but that didn't matter to me.
I walked into the shop and it seemed I might be his first customer. Good, then I wouldn't have to worry about anyone stealing away his attention, at least for a few minutes.
I walked straight to where Aramis was, not needing to look around.
"Greetings, cousin," I said with my usual short smile. "How are things looking for you?"

When the bell jingled, I looked up from what I was doing to see Therin striding into the store. Opening my arms, I embracing him, thumping him on the back. "Therin, long time no see," I said. "Business is flourishing, how are you?"

I shrugged, not really interested in talking about myself. "Things are the usual," I said, "I have decided that today I should get away from the boredom of the day to day and entertain myself."

"Of course!" I said with a little bit of flair, "I am thinking some wine, cheese, and some meat that you think would go with."

I laughed. "I have all of those things here," I said, "though I think you might be surprised by how foreigners eat what I have." Pulling a small box off a shelf, I opened it and unwrapped the contents from their brown cloth. "This is dried yak meat," I said. "It comes from the high mountains of Ch'n. It's not exactly meant to be eaten with wine and cheese."

I took the box from Aramis and gave it a smell. It was unique but I was not sure if it was in a good or a bad way.
"I think Im looking for something a little bit spicier," I said. "and not something that would have me initiated into Valerian." I added with somewhat of a smile.

I wrapped up the yak meat, thinking about Therin's request. "It's not exactly rare," I said, pulling out another box, "but this is spicy sausage from Caerdicca Unitas."

I observed the sausage and smelled it as well. "I will take this. Maybe you have a wine that is a little more unusual?"

"I think so," I said. Moving to another part of the store, I fetched a bottle. "This is a good red, from Hellas."

I looked at the bottle that Aramis handed me and I simply took his word for it. I trusted his judgment.
"Wine and meat, very good," I said. I had not spoken to Aramis in a while so I said, "tell me cousin, is there anything new with you?"

"Yes, in fact," I said, as I went to the counter to ring up his purchases. "I've hired a girl to help me about the shop part time. Marie Legard. She's the sister of Malabelle's fiancee."

I raised an eyebrow at Aramis' mention of his new assistant. I had heard of Malabelle's fiancee though I had not spent much time with her or even meet him yet. "She is with a Valerian adept correct?" I then smiled in a tease and said, "your not trying to catch a Legard of your own now are you?"

"She is," I said. "Though I believe he has left Valerian to live with her." A smile quirked at the corners of my mouth at his mention of Marie. "Come now, Therin, it's never good policy to mix work and play." I certainly thought Marie was pretty, but I didn't think she was interested in me like that.
I gave him his total for the wine and meat. "One gold ducat and twenty silver, please."

I smiled at his response as I counted out the money for the items. "it may not be good policy," I said, "but you should know that I have not always been a promoter of good policy."
I handed him the money but did not make move to leave right away. Though I would if another customer showed up. I was not one to take away from his business. I respected Aramis for being a man of his own and owning such a shop.
"Is there anything else of interest going on? I feel almost like an outsider here, my father has not let me keep up with the family news properly."

"Maybe you will be once you see the lady," I replied with a wink. "She is quite pretty."
I thought a moment. "Well, Anacrasia is getting married also, to the Duc d'Aiglemort. Quite an alliance."

I smiled a little in amusement at Aramis' comment. For the most part the only thing I did with pretty ladies was use them for sport, only a few really gained my respect. They had to earn it.
I nedded in agreement when he mentioned the Dutchess' marriage. That would be a good contract, "is it a marriage because of their family or is she also in love?"
Truth be told I would not be bothered by such an agreement as long as the woman wasn't insufferable or a jealous type. Manogamy was not a title for me nor a trait I would look for in her.

"I am told it is a love match, though I imagine that positive politics didn't hurt," I replied. "Whatever the reason, it's about time for them both."

I nodded in agreement to both of Aramis' comments. "Yes, it would be easier to marry someone when others contribute to the match."

"I don't think anyone got a say in the match," I said. "But the Duc's reputation is spotless, if there were an objection, someone would have said something by now."

I thought for a moment and then said with a smile, "I have a feeling that Anacrasia would marry who she wanted to rather or not anyone agreed. It is a good match though, hopefully all works out the way she wants it too."

I shrugged and gave a bored sigh, "the only interesting things in my life are those of which I don't know." I realized then that I probably shouldn't vent to every relative that I have about my father, but I figured I could trust Aramis, and I hadn't told a large number of people. "My father is about some new business but he has not let me join in on it, yet." I paused momentarily before I said yet, wondering if there would even be one. I suppose, though, that he couldn't keep anything a secret forever.

I nodded my head in a no. "I wish that I did," I said. I thought for a moment and then sighed dejectedly. "I might have to start getting nosy." In truth it sounded like a lot of work that I should not have to set myself too. I had other ways I'd rather spend my time.

I shrugged, "it may be." After a brief moment of thought I added, "if I don't take the opportunity I will probably regret it later."
I realized that I had been holding Aramis up and that he probably had better things to do with his time. "Thank you for the fine selections, as always." I told him, giving him a chance to see a way out of the conversation if he did have other things to do.
