Mara, I needed to see Mara. These days of keeping up my sane façade in place had stretched me thin and I needed to feel her in my arms. I made my way to Valerian, having to keep myself from running all the way.
I told the adept at the door who I was there to see and he asked me to wait while he went to find her. I had been pacing a track in the rug when the same adept came back and told me that Mara wasn't here. It seemed she was at Mandrake.
My heart, stomach, everything got stuck in my throat and I couldn't breath much less say goodbye to the adept as I fled Valerian.
Mandrake? Oh gods……
I barely made it behind some bushes before I vomited. What a undignified sight I must be, but I didn't care. She had said she'd stay here, that she could wait for me...
I had no right to really have expected her to though.
Sticking to the shadows, I stumbled away from the Night Court and to Night's Doorstep. I needed to drink… a lot.
