The ride was the longest I'd ever experienced in my life. I slept in fitful snatches, having no one to share it with. No shoulder to lean against, no one to help warm me when I became chilled. I'd left too quickly to provision myself right, so much of the time I spent chilled, feeling worse, feeling horrid. It'd given me much time to think, but what was there to think about? Replaying it my mind did nothing but make me relive the horrors, relive the terrifying fear and the hurtful words... And no matter how I tried, I couldn't find a reason that I should have stayed.
Knowing that, though, didn't make it an ounce easier.
By the time my carriage rolled up to the townhouse I shared, or rather, had shared, with my brothers, I was at least appearing better. My dress had been changed into a dark blue and rose one, suitable for traveling as it hid dust. It was one of the warmer ones I had as well, which made it marginally nicer. My hair, lacking any curlers or maids to help, was swept back into a lovers knot, a messy contraption used mostly by adepts. I couldn't bear anymore though; I had no will to. Stepping from the carriage, I made my way to the doors, but before I opened the door I took a deep breath, praying for help, praying for luck. I'd heard a horse race past my carriage at break-neck speed a few hours after we'd left the estate, and while my breath was held that it might be Del, it continued on, up the road... I heard talks that the rider was dressed in the colors of the family, and they started debating on what sort of message could be so important that a courier fly so quickly.
I closed my eyes, sure I knew what it was. I remembered Delaunays promise.
Taking a deep breath, I opened the door and stepped in, all at once feeling an overwhelming burst of relief to be here, and a staggering amount of sadness as well.

I was in the library, poring over some documents that were related to the estate, and I had a few questions. When I heard the door open, I walked out into the foyer, saying, "Gratien, I-" and stopped.
Azabel stood there, and though her dress was clean, her face was dirty and her hair messy. She looked haggard, as though she had aged 20 years since I saw her on her wedding day. Something dreadful had happened, and I didn't know what yet. I opened my arms and took her into them, she looked like she might collapse any minute. "What's happened?" I asked softly.

I didn't know what I expected, but I was glad I hadn't walked into a gathering of peers and friends, or a luncheon, or anything else that included people other than my brothers. I didn't want to see mother and father right now either, didn't want to see what weighed in their eyes.
When Pierre appeared, I felt my knees quiver again, but for the first time this was out of gratitude and happiness. His arms opened and I clutched him and placed my face against his chest, taking in his solidness, his comfort, with more appreciation than he ever could have begun to understand.
"It's over," I said softly, my lip quivering as I fought the tears again. I didn't want to cry; I was tired of it, of feeling horrid and sad, of this nightmare that wasn't ending. It would continue, aftershocks rippling through, from what society would say, to what our parents would say... to what Sabrina would say. "It's over. We're getting the marriage annulled." My words were half mumbled, but my focus was more on the struggle not to cry than anything else.

I could feel her struggling not to cry; she was trembling like a leaf. I stroked her hair comfortingly, holding her to me. At her news, I felt surprise, then shock, then horror. "Are you hurt?" I asked worriedly. "Did he harm you?"

"Harm?" I repeated his question in an attempt to stall, my mind flashing to when Del had snatched me by my arm and hauled me to my feet, dragging me from my bathing room, down the hall, into the bedroom. He'd not touched me again after that, something I was grateful for, with that wild, mad look in his eyes. Slowly I shook my head, my voice becoming more assured than my actions had been. "No, he didn't harm me. Not like that."
Pierres comforting touches were working; slowly I was calming, my lip ceasing to quiver, though I didn't try to pull away from him just yet. I hesitated, not sure what to say... I'd not told Pierre or Gratien, hadn't told anyone, about the problems Del and I had had prior to our wedding. I knew telling them now would run the risk of hurting him that I hadn't confided earlier, but it'd been a relationship problem... and I didn't like airing my dirty laundry in public, so the saying went.
"He.. I.." I stopped, swallowing, before leaning back enough to look up at him. Little Pierre, he'd always been; I remembered diapering him when he was young. Little no more though; he was a man by all rights now. "Is Gratien here? I should probably tell you together."

I shook my head. "He's out right now, but he should be coming back soon," I said. "I'm so sorry, sister. I know how much you loved him." I looked into her face. "Can I get you anything? Some water?"

Pierres apology made me close my eyes, but I forced myself to open them again, not to let myself sink again into the well of sadness that I'd steeped in for the past day and a half of traveling. I took a half step back, not pushing away from him, but signaling I was strong enough again to stand alone, though I still felt grateful to Pierre for his soft touch and support. "Water would be nice," I answered softly, clasping my hands together before my stomach. "I'm sorry Pierre.. I'd have sent word ahead that I'd be returning, but it was just too quick."

I had been out at the exchequer sorting out taxes due on the estate only to arrive home to see a strange carriage in the drive, with people unloading items. Urging my mount forward till I was closer I recognized the trunks right away, they were Azabel's. I knew right away what had happened and I leapt off my horse, tossing the reigns to some one before hurrying inside the house. "Azabel!" I called out moving inside the house only to find her and Pierre not that far in. "What happened, what did he do to you?" I asked going toward her, opening my arms for an embrace.

Before Pierre could move away, the door burst opened and I jumped, gasping, spinning to see who it was. Instead of Dels tall, dark frame, it was Gratien instead, his arms open for an embrace, and his words automatically pegging Del as the bad one. I went to him, hugging my older brother, knowing his arms would protect me as much as Pierres had. "He.. didn't," I said, though I was unsure how true that was. He hadn't physically, but I wasn't sure if I'd ever get the mental image of Del locking the door, of him turning and stalking towards me with a dark light behind his eyes.
Shuddering, I leaned back slightly, enough to look at him. Strange; Gratiens face washed in my vision; I hadn't realized I was crying again. "You were right," I said softly, sadly. "It's over.. we're getting the marriage annulled."

"Good," I said vehemently. "I'm glad, I never liked him. This is all Sabrina's fault, if she had been paying attention to her job as Queen and not busy rutting her damned Barbarian, you wouldn't be suffering like you are." I said with anger boiling over. "Where is he, I'm going to kill him." I pulled away from my sister and went toward the case that held a variety of swords and pulled one down and a belt to hold it. "I swear to the Gods, I'm going to gut him like the pig he is Aza. Dirty, gods forsaken grandson of a traitorous whore." I cursed as I sheathed the sword so that I could put on the belt, my voice just a notch below yelling.

Before I had a chance to get Aza her water, Gratien came home. I heard the news, and I reached out to put a hand on Aza's shoulder, as Gratien began to bluster. "Calm down, Gratien," I said, keeping my voice level for Azabel's sake. "Yelling and blaming isn't going to help matters. No one is killing anyone." I walked over to stand between him and the door. "Right now, we both need to be here, taking care of our sister. Put your sword down, we can figure out what to do tomorrow." I met his eyes, so he could see how serious I was.

Gratiens anger bubbled, spilling over the edges like a white-hot pot above a bed of coals. I recoiled immediately, staring at him with wide eyes until Pierre reacted, calmly and assertively.
"Gratien, don't," I added, drawing in a shaky breath. Gods! I'd lost all my wits; I needed to pull myself together. I'd not been raised to be some flimsy girl who couldn't handle a stressful situation.. I was a de Somerville. Vaguely I was aware of the scent of apples rising in the room, and no wonder with such tense conditions and we three together.
"It just.. It didn't work out between us," I said, taking a hesitant step towards him. "Come, Gratien.. lets go sit in the parlor, and I'll tell you both what happened." I glanced to Pierre, then Gratien again, laying my hand on his which held the sword, my eyes and voice both pleading. "Please, brother... Don't make this worse than it is."

I narrowed my eyes at Pierre as he stepped between me and the door, more anger flairing, but now at my little brother standing in my way and telling me what to do. I suddenly had a flash of Reese and the comments he would make about our brother. But I forgot about them in no time, turning my attention back to Azabel. "How can this be any worse?" I asked still angry, but I tossed my sword and scabbard to the ground. "This never should have happened, I should have stepped in and said something when you first came to us about this ridiculous marriage. You know, I hate to say it but I told you so." I shook my head, pacing back and forth to ware off the anger pumping through my blood and ran my hand through my hair. "I should have known." I muttered to myself before looking at her again. "Father was right about him, you should have listened to him; he saw it ten years ago." I continued to shake my head as I tried hard to not feeling the rage I felt against Delaunay. He was scum in my opinion, and despite what Aza said, I would indeed give him a piece of my mind the next time I saw him. "So, have it out, what did you do to you then?" I asked. "I bet he never even loved you, I bet he turned out to be a big liar."

The more Gratiens temper flared, the more his spat things from his mouth that hurt, the more I saw how very much like Delaunay he was. Sweet and loving at times, but when his temper took him...
I shivered and moved away from him, my back stiff from him having the audacity to tell me he told me so, that I should have listened to Father when he forbade me to see Del all those years ago. For a moment I stood with my back to him, and when I turned around again, I was glaring at him from behind a veil of tears, making him shimmer and shake in my vision. "I married him because the Queen wanted me to. Because I love him Gratien, not because I was out to prove you or Father wrong. Delaunay loved me too... but we're not the right fit for each other. He.. He's too... " Too Shahrizai. "Dark for me, and I can't be who he wants me to."
I glanced at Pierre again before taking a breath; I'd hoped to have been able to settle myself before launching into this, but apparently that wasn't going to be possible.
"Just before our wedding, Del... Well.. He went to care for his Shahrizai nature inside Valerians walls." Despite everything, my cheeks still flushed a bright red at having to share this with my brothers, but it had to be done. I told them next of how I'd gone out shopping while he was out, unable to sit at home, and heard rumor that Del had asked an adept to marry him from Valerian, and the adept had turned his proposal down. I'd confirmed it later, and when he came home... we'd had words. "We married, though, but... The honeymoon, it didn't go as planned. I don't think we were at his estate an hour before we started fighting."

As Azabel told her story, I moved away from the door to be at her side, putting an arm about her shoulders. I tried not to judge too harshly; not her, not her husband, and not the Queen. They had all done what they thought was best. "It's all right, Azabel," I said, trying to soothe her. Gratien was my brother and I loved him, but by all the gods, his temper was not helping our sister. "You didn't do anything wrong, we'll get through this."

I stopped at Azabel's words and sighed softly, my anger decreasing as I shook my head. "I'm sorry Aza." I said softly as I placed my hands on my hips and sighed again. "I didn't mean to say... its not your fault, I shouldn't have implied that. I just... I'm so mad, I hate that you're hurt right now. I'm your big brother, I'm supposed to protect you from things like this." I took a breath and went toward her, my arm wrapping around her too just underneath Pierre's arm. "He's a right rat bastard for doing that to you Aza." I added, my voice calm, though still thready with anger. "I'm sorry that you had to put up with him."

The comfort of my brothers was overwhelming, and for the first time since everything had broken down at the estate, I smiled. Small and tentative, but it was there before fading a moment later. I felt guilty.. Guilty that they didn't know the whole story, didn't know the extent that it went, but I didn't know if I should tell them... and that tore me up. What would Gratien think if he knew? What would he do?
"I'm sorry for everything too," I said softly, looking at both Pierre and Gratien. "You're partly right anyway Gratien.. I should have listened to you and Father, but I thought... I thought..."
I sighed again, giving up and feeling crestfallen. "At least it happened now," I added softly, "Before I'd lit my candle... I can only imagine how much worse it would have been then." I dallied, shifting my weight from one foot to another, struggling with the weight of needing to tell them what happened, but not truly knowing if I should.

I hugged her more tightly. "Thank Elua for small blessings," I said. "It's going to be all right, Aza, you have lots of time ahead of you."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a wide-eyed servant girl staring. "Get the princess a glass of water," I said to her, "and hurry." The girl, red-faced, went.

I nodded, taking solace in Pierres soothing presence. "I know... but what is society going to say? What is the Queen going to say?"
I sighed and made my way over to a lounge and took a seat, feeling exhausted, weary. The girl came back, still pink-cheeked, handing me the water upon a shaky tray. "Thank you,"I said softly, trying to calm her before she left.

"Never mind what society will say," I said. "We can work the rumor mill in your favor, make sure everyone knows it is you who has been wronged. As for the queen..." I sighed. "What can she say? It's not as though she could force you to stay married to someone like that."

I nodded, sighing. It only just occurred to me that nothing had come from the Queen yet; Pierre and Gratien had been wholly unaware of the situation. Taking a drink of the water, I dallied, sliding my finger about the rim of the glass. Gratien was quiet for the moment and I looked at him, wondering what he was thinking.

I had lost track of their conversation, my mind instead milling over ideas, yes... gossip. Perhaps there was a way to get back at the Shahrizai Prince using the insipid fools of the court, surely I could cut his reputation in shreds, even if I couldn't cut him. The thought made me smile but I heard something that made me turn to Azabel, moving to her and then kneeling in front of her. "Thats right, she can't force you to stay married to that brute." I said angerily. "I have her head if she even thinks about it, and I'll be sure to go with you to speak with her, to make sure she doesn't try and convince you other wise."

When Gratien kneeled before me I reached out automatically, smoothing his hair upon his head in a comforting gesture. For all it was my life that had gone completely awry, Gratien was still taking it harshly, bearing the burden upon himself as an elder brother... though none of this had been under his control. It'd left his ability to veto it as soon as Sabrina had called me to her; effectually, since it started.
"It's alright Gratien... Really, it's alright. One way or another... I just have to get through this, through everything in the beginning."
I was starting to calm, to feel more like a de Somerville again and not a witless girl who was distraught over her marriage. Gods. Just the thought made the grief raise its ugly head in me, and I scrambled mentally to quell it, to just... talk, to try to figure things out again without crying. My cheeks still felt tight from the rivulets of tears that had crossed them, drying and leaving salty beds upon my skin in its wake.
I opened my mouth again to reassure him, my hand caressing over his hair again when a stout knock landed upon the door. I jumped, my senses heightened and dulled at the same time, making me feel like an utter fool. Color stained my cheeks and I looked left and right, not wanting anyone to see me, not like this. Thankfully I was around the corner from where the door was, but before I could get up leave, one of the servants had answered the door.
"Good afternoon." A girls voice.. likely the maid who'd brought me my water.
"Good afternoon. I have a missive from her Highness, the Queen of Terre d'Ange, Sabrina de la Courcel, for her Grace, Princess Azabel de la Courcel."
"Thank you, I'll..."
The voices faded away as my eyes widened, and I looked at Gratien and Pierre as the worry began to set into me. I didn't have enough time! I'd only just arrived, hadn't even been able to bathe yet... And now I was to face the Queen. I didn't know what else it could be.
"He sent a courier," I whispered sadly. "He told me he'd send a message to Sabrina asking to have our marriage annulled."

I stood and listened out into the hall way before turning back to look at Aza. "You don't have to go," I said firmly. "She had no need to see you this moment, I can tell her to wait." I knit my brows, wondering why on earth Delaunay would want to have his marriage annuled so fast; he must want to go back to his little whore thats why. I clenched my fists at my sides for a moment as I looked out toward the hall way and then back to my sister as I waited for a reply.

I paused, listening to them, but before I could answer the maid stepped cautiously into the room. Bobbing a quick curtsy, she came to me with eyes downcast and offered me the envelope, reciting who it was from with a quiet voice. Taking the envelope, I thanked and dismissed her, though I hesitated before opening it.
I glanced at my two brothers.. Two of three, and I missed Reese quite a lot just then. There was no love lost between he and Gratien, and I didn't think Pierre was fond of him either, but I'd always understood Reese... Taking a soft breath, I broke the seal and opened the missive, reading the few words quickly.
"She wants me to come to her as soon as soon as I am able," I said quietly. "Though I don't think she necessarily means now... Elua, I should just get it done with. I napped a little before we reached the City, so I think I'll bathe, change into a proper dress, and then go."
Reaching up, I undid my lovers knot with practiced hands, then ran my fingers though my hair to help detangle it. A maid walked by and I halted her, asking a bath to be drawn, before looking back to Pierre and Gratien. I felt... hollow, and I didn't think it was going to get any better anytime soon. My eyes were dry again, and I knew I needed to work at keeping them that way, to keep my bearings and princessly mannerisms in the Palace and before the Queen.

I frowned. "Are you sure?" I asked. "If you don't want to go, don't go. You might feel more clear minded tomorrow." I moved to brush the stray hairs off her face.

I caught Pierres hand up, giving it a soft squeeze before standing. "I might, but I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight knowing it'd come tomorrow," I said softly. "I need to get it done.. and out of the way. There's nothing that I could say tomorrow that I couldn't say today."
Leaning up, I kissed Pierres cheek, then moved to Gratien to do the same. "I love you both, so very much.... thank you for being here for me." I looked at them both, hoping they knew how much I meant it -- I'd remember this day for the remainder of my life, I was positive.

I watched Aza and listened, unsure if this would end well. I had the distinct feeling that Sabrina would try to convince her to stay married to the brainless oaf; I was already thinking ways to avoid such a circumstance. "Go if you must sister, just know that we love you and we're here for you." I said finally.
