I gritted my teeth as my eyes closed. It was getting harder to stand, and my foot was more slippery than ever. Focusing on the pain, I listened to my heartbeat, feeling them together. Being in tune with my body's reactions helped, but not enough. I dug my nails into my palms at I tried to remain standing, but I could feel my knee starting to buckle and knew that I would fall soon. I dreaded it.

It wouldn't be long until she fell, the strain on her was obvious. My eyes swept over the floor, making sure there was nothing there that would hurt her when she collapsed. Otherwise, I held still and quiet, giving her nothing to latch on to as a means of focusing outward again.

My knee buckled further, and soon my ankle begin to follow suit. As I stuggled to remain standing, my sweaty foot slipped and I came down with a thump, ribs landing on one of the bags of sand at my wrist. I gasped as the wind was knocked out me. Wiggling my right hand out of the second bag, I grabbed at my side, making sure nothing was broken. My body hurt, but it was a good pain, and my breath came as though in the throes of desire.
There was utter silence in the room. My breath gradually slowed. Not knowing what to say, I slipped my right hand back into the loop and stood, eyes lowered, waiting for Douleur's judgement.

"You may leave the bags there and put your clothes back on," I told her.

Hastily, I moved to obey. Slipping the loops off my wrists, I went to where my clothes were and put them back on. They felt sticky and hot against my skin. Anxiously, I stood there, angry with myself for falling, but more worried that I had disappointed. It was only ten minutes, but that was nothing compared to an assignation. Frustrated, I waited for instructions.

I walked over to where she was standing, and raised my hand to caress her cheek.
"Now you know what it is to fall, that it is nothing to fear," I said gently. "Next I will teach you how stand longer."

I wanted to weep with gratitude at her words and touch. "Yes," I said quietly. "Thank you."
Something I had only previously imagined in my mind was coming to light now. There was pain inflicted, but somehow that pain made the caress seem all the more sweet and soft. The duality of pain and pleasure was becoming clearer to me, and I silently rejoiced at it. In a place deep in my belly, I felt a slight stirring of genuine desire and it gave me pleasure and joy, even as my body ached.
"Where shall I stand?" I asked her politely.

"That will be for the next lesson. I don't want to put you through too much at once. You need to go soak so that your ribs won't bruise as badly," I told her, brushing her hair back.
"Trinette told me they have found you a Mandrake instructor and that you will be there tomorrow. We will continue after that." I smiled . "Go on now, see to your hurts. I will see you soon."

Her touch was soothing and I felt warm affection growing for her. She was strict, but kind, and understanding. "Then I will see you in two days," I said nodding. "Be well. I will go take care of my ribs now." Slowly I turned and exited the chamber.

After she left, I straightened the room, making sure everything was back in its place.
I was just about to leave when I was drawn back to the cross. The metal had grown cold again already and I couldn't help the small moan of need that rose from me as I let my fingers trace over it. I needed a patron. After the disaster of Midwinter and the time that had passed, I was more than ready. I let my cheek rest against the cross for a moment before taking a deep breath and heading back to my room.
