It had been a long time. A long, long time. Amidst my confusion, amidst my various entanglements, I'd not spent anytime looking for Larquel. I knew he had been traveling, I didn't remember when he was coming back.
There was only one way to find out. And so dressed in a simple gown of beige, I made for Orchis house, on foot, smiling to myself. I liked that House, and it had been a long time.
I pressed my hand to the door, and knocked.

Wandering the halls of Orchis House, book in one hand and a strand of my long dark red hair twirling in another I heard a knock at the door. Glancing around to see if there were any younger adepts hiding in corners avoiding chores I made my way to the door. Alas, they were all either busy or effectively dodging my gaze, and so I made to open the door myself.
"Hello." I said with a smile, opening the door wide enough to let the girl standing outside to enter.

A look of surprise came over me when I saw that it wasn't a young fosterling who opened the door, but a full-fledged adept. She was holding the door open, and I smiled back, "Hello, and thank you," I told her.
"My name is Shona no Bryony," I said with a grin. "I was wondering if Larquel no Orchis was around today," I added, justifying my presence.
I looked at her more closely - she was just a little younger than me, but she might know him. Weren't they all fostered together, anyway?

"Well come in, and as soon as I can catch one of those youngsters running around here I'll have them send for him." I told her, closing the door as I did. "One of them should be around shortly," I said laughing a little, "They can't hide forever." and I looked down the hall one more time before introducing myself, "I'm Genevie, by the way, It's a pleasure to meet you Shona." I said, my smile never straying from my face. "It's not often I get to meet one of Larquel's friends."

"Well, he's been gone for a while," I said, shrugging a little shyly. My face lit up with a wide smile, and I busted out my question hurriedly, "Does this mean he's back already?" and realizing my complete lack of manners, I smiled again, and said, "It's lovely to meet you too, Genevie. I'm surprised I haven't met you before... there was an era where one would have thought I lived here," I added, chuckling a little for it, though it was true.

Laughing with her I grinned, "Oh, we've probably ran into one another at one point, I'm sure, this place can be pretty busy at times." I added, "And with all the guests that frequent the place I've never been able to keep peoples names and faces straight. That is unless they live here. I'm pretty sure that if Larquel is here, we can find him." I told her, not wanting to get her hopes up but trying not to let her down.

"We'll have to see," I replied amicably. "If he's not here, I guess I'll have to hunt him down to whereever his tsingano friends are keeping him captive. Perhaps you will join me? we can laugh and wager them to death," I offered, and my lips were already quirking up at my ridiculous jest.

"Hmm, that would be quite wonderful actually, I've spent too much time cooped up in here," I told her, smiling as I waved my book, "Too much time on my hands, and what do I do? I pick up a book and start studying." I said, laughing, "Although, the Arts of Namaah are never boring, I'd be glad to get out of this House."

"Well, I don't have anything planned today, so if Larquel doesn't come out of hiding, maybe you would like to tag along for a romp on Night's doorstep?" I offered helfully. "I've been in dire need of spending time with people that aren't patrons, or otherwise complicated relations, if you know what I mean..." I grinned at the thought - I didn't have many female friends, maybe Genevie would like to take me up on my offer. "I've been cooped up with books myself quite a bit..."

"I would love to come along, are you kidding? I'm always up for a visit to nights doorstep, and it would be wonderful to have some company." I replied, my eyes glittering with anticipation, my smile just as bright. "Let's just see if we can track down one of the youngsters, they can help us find Larquel." I said, and just then a rather young lad rounded the corner into the entry way, being led by another older girl who was in the middle of telling him off for shirking his chores.
"Now, Ahndray, you had better stay where people can find you or else the next time I find you wandering around the garden's I'll have Cook give you bread and water for supper for a week. Do you understand me?" The girl said, the boy nodded and ran off to take up his post.
Turning to us she smiled brightly and blushed, not accustomed to having an audience, but she handled herself well. "Is there anything I can help you with, Genevie?" She said, and I was glad I could remember her name.
"Ah Cheri, yes there is actually, Shona was wondering if you could see if Larquel is back yet, she'd like to see him if he's around." I told her, glad to see someone was keeping track of the young ones around here.
"Of course, I'd be glad to help," She replied with a smile. "Follow me," Cheri was a cute girl, she had large green eyes and a bright smile framed by a head of curly blonde hair the likes of which painters are often wont to portray in their drawings, with each curl a perfect ringlet from head to shoulder, and they bounced as she walked, turning the corner to lead us to the Adepts quarters.

I was about to lay a hand on Genevie's arm for my happiness that she had accepted my spontaneous offer. She was easy to be around, Genevie - then again, it was that with those of Orchis, they were fun, and lively, and friendly. I always thought if it hadn't been for my mother's own pride in her former house, I should have been fostered at Orchis rather than Bryony. But such had been my fate, and I didn't regret it - I had some rather true allegiance to my house, despite my affinities.
I observed the exchange, keeping a chuckle to myself, for poor little Ahndray did rather remind me of Larquel when he was younger, and we talked each other into countless mischief.
So I followed, grinning. "I should really come by Orchis more often," I mused aloud. "This house is so full of life, and joy," I noted... more so than my musty books.

I grinned, nodding, "We do like to enjoy ourselves here, I can say that much," I replied, "And I'm glad to see you enjoy our company." I added, following along with Cheri in the lead. As we made our way down the halls I thought to myself that I would have to let the Dowayne know of her good works, she was really turning into quite the young woman.
"How old are you now, Cheri? Last I knew you were ten years old and a newly made servant of Namaah, how long has it been, I can't quite remember."
"I'm thirteen now, almost fourteen, my natal is only four months away."
"Oh my, how the time passes." I replied, giving the girl a grin. "It's wonderful to see that you've been doing so well." I told her.

"It does, doesn't it?" I said with a smile. "It seems like yesterday was my debut and... oh my," I paused, grinning, "and I was here, in this hall, getting surprised by Larquel - oh, the prankster. He cold have made me die right there, if I didn't know he was up to something - he always is."
I paused, and looked at Cheri, with mock suspicion, "He's not put you up to anything, now, has he? You can tell me, and we'll turn the prank on him, you and I. Oh, I won't tell him you became a turncoat, I promise," I added, grinning wide, and vastly amused at the thought.

Cheri giggled, "No, he's not, believe me. I haven't seen him yet this day, I've been a little busy with corralling the youngsters, they seem to be quite anxious to be at play rather than at their chores. Let's just see if he's here and that will answer your questions." she told Shona.
"He certainly is one of the crafty one's isn't he." I remarked, glad that Cheri could answer for herself.

"Oh gods," I said, rolling my eyes. "I remember the first time we met - you know, he's naughty, but he did save me a whipping. We had joie from the tray, and then, well, with the effect, I spilled some, and even if he had somewhat put me up to it, he did take the blame and the punishment. Crafty, good-hearted, and annoying at times," I said with a warm smile. "He's like the little brother I never had really."

"Oh my! That's a side of him I've not seen, I don't really know him much but it seem likely for him to do that sort of thing." I told her, just as Cheri came to stop at a door just a few feet in front of us, reaching up to knock just as we made even with her.
She knocked again and shrugged when there wasn't an answer. "I'm sorry, he doesn't seem to be answering." She said.

"Oh well," I shrugged. "I guess it's you and me then," I told Genevie with a wide smile. "Thank you Cheri, that was very helpful of you," I said to the younger girl. I looked at her a little more, and said, "Gods, Naamah's servants are more beautiful with every generation, is it not true?" I winked at Genevie, and added, "When your debut is nigh, I am sure that the peers compete with very high prices for the privilege of discovering you." She blushed just a little, and I grinned. "Ah, to be young still," and with that, I offered my arm to Genevie companionably. "Shall we?"

"It is true," I agreed and linked arms with Shona before heading off for a rather spontaneous afternoon outing, grinning all the way.

And so arm in arm, Genevie no Orchis and I left Cherie, and I smiled to my new-found accomplice. “Well, then, where would our whimsy take us, you think? Did you have a particular place in mind? If not, I know the best…” oh, gods, it was childhood all over again, “the best candy seller in town,” I said grinning foolishly. This was grand – I hadn’t felt this light-hearted in a while. I really did need to visit Orchis more often. After all, I did have a special kinship with this House, did I not?

"That would certainly make a good start, let's go there," I replied, laughing lightly. I hadn't been to a sweets shop in a long time. "Then we can find our way through town as we enjoy our treats." I added, grinning just as much as she was and walked with her out to the front door and on our way to adventure.
