I stood next to Cousin Analisse, watching as she read the letter mother had sent with me to further explain the need for me to live elsewhere. I was only 7, and I had my own ideas about just why my stepfather had disliked me so, but I kept my opinions to myself for now.
I sighed and looked down at my feet, where my puppy used to sit. I wondered why I'd had to leave him behind, and was definitely missing him. I also wondered if I would be allowed to have another pet.
Raising my eyes once more, I shuffled my feet and put on a brave smile when Analisse cleared her throat. She shook her head, but there was a smile on her face. "I do wonder about your mother, child. She's always been a bit flighty."
I had no answer to that, so I shrugged. I was more concerned with a new puppy, and where I would be staying. I had always been one to speak what I was thinking, and I did so now. "Where's my room to be? And can I have a puppy? I miss the one I had to leave behind." I gave her what I believed to be a pleading smile, and waited.
Again she sighed, and as she looked at the few belongings I'd brought with me, she seemed to be thinking about my question. My smile fell when she shook her head and glanced down the hall. "No pets, child. And I think I had best put you in the room that's connected to mine. I'll have to have a lock put on the door, but I will feel better if I can keep a close eye on you."
She started down the hall and motioned for me to follow. Since I had no other option, I did, but I dragged my feet about it, feeling more than a little upset that she'd denied me a puppy. Behind me, a pair of maids had picked up my things and followed us.
She was waiting patiently beside an open door, and when I reached her side, she motioned for me to enter. Again, my options were limited, so I went into the room that would be mine for many years to come. The maids came in as well, sat down my things, then left again.
I took in the simple room, then turned to find Analisse still standing in the doorway, a smile once more lighting up her face. "Stay here and unpack, or take a nap if you wish, Tsura. I have a letter or two of my own to write, so if you want to talk to me later, just ask a maid to show you where my office is."
All I could do, as I sat down on top of the bed, was nod and wonder what other changes my life would undergo.
