My move to the City of Elua, as unwanted as it was, had been a fairly pleasant one. The only things that marred the sunshine were my worry about my father's failing health, and the fact that he had felt a need to move us to the City. On the other hand was the knowledge that he would probably get better treatment here than he had at home.
I sighed and looked out the window of the carriage to watch as the walls of the city grew closer. Despite having grown up so close to the City, I had only been here a few times, and those memories were fuzzy at best. Glancing back to father's weary and beloved face, I shook my head. He had been most adamant about this move, and I knew he only thought to cheer me. He had little thought of himself, brushing off what had been at first only a slight illness. I did so hope this move wasn't too hard on him.
I bowed my head and closed my eyes, thinking back to a time when I had come upon him by surprise. He hadn't known I was there at first, and I had watched him for several moments with his head bowed, a single tear running down his face. I had never seen him cry before, and all I wanted to do was cheer him, so I went bouncing in and tugged on his sleeve. He looked down at me, and I smiled, then wiped away the teardrop. "Don't be sad, papa. See, Kische loves you." I held up my grey striped kitten for him to take. It went unsaid, but understood, that I loved him too.
Bringing myself back to the present, I raised my eyes to once again look at my father, who was dosing even as we passed through the gates of the City of Elua. For good or ill, we had arrived in whatever this change would bring us.
