It was four days later when I had a break in my duties and had the opportunity to track down Karina. I thought about going to some of the laundry shoppes to see if I could find her that way, but decided I should make my first stop the tavern where we met. I remembered vaguely that she had mentioned she knew the owner and had been there before, it might be the best place to start.
When I arrived I was met with a gloomy stare of the man I had seen that night I had been there.
"If you've come to make a scene I won't allow it." He said right away. I put my hands up in surrender and shook my head.
"No, not at all. In fact I wish to apologize." I began. "I'm sorry for being a disturbance." He nodded and I smiled softly.
"I'm also looking for the girl I had been talking to that night, as to where I might find her to do the same."
"Ah, you're talking about Karina." He said after a moment of thought. "Yes, I know her." I smiled and took a breath of relief.
"Do you know what her last name is, or where I could find her?" I asked.
"Sure, she lives up a Valerian House; believe she's the second now." I stared at him for a moment, in some shock and disbelief at what he had just said.
"Valerian?" I echoed, trying to be sure I had heard him right.
"Yes sir." He replied as he looked at me. "Girls done right good for herself." I just blinked and then shook my head and let out a sharp breath through my nose.
The Gods must have been laughing at me, of all the people that I could have met, of all the girls I could be tracking down, a Valerian, and she probably knows my brother.
I laughed then and shook my head.
"My thanks." I said and then turned on my heal, deciding to head first to the flower stand, and then head to Valerian House. The gods had a sense of humour indeed.
