In Azzalle we had been met with the Queen's men and our convoy joined theirs. It made for an impressive group, but I found for the first time in my life, uncomfortable in the company of all men. Things with Ferris had been.... different since that day at port, for some reason I felt less and less inclined to spend time with him, or even with Fin. I was never mean or cruel, I never avoided them by any means, but in the evenings I would eat and go to bed, uninterested in conversing with the others.
It made me sad, but some how I also knew it was for the best. Deep down I knew I needed to stop thinking about Ferris as anything other then my near brother, he was to be the Crurach one day, and I'd never fit into anything other then perhaps friend and adviser.
Either way, the journey had passed uneventfully, Fin did his best to include me and continued to flirt with me, which seemed to be my only amusement on the trip. When we reached just out side the city I perked up as I watched us near the walls.

Things since Azzalle had changed as far as I was concerned, and I wasn't sure what that would hold for the future once we were settled at court. Ferris and I had been spending time more time together and we seemed thrown together more often when it came to duties or when we camped at night. But Mairin seemed to pull away from bother Ferris and I. It wasn't as if she was that different, she still laughed and smiled, but the way she looked at Ferris was different, as if she was looking past him to something more important. I did my best to be there for Ferris in exchange for her, but I fear it wasn't the same thing. I wasn't even sure he really knew or cared since we never spoke of her directly, just about the City, the Night Court, and what we might find one we were there.
When we approached the city walls I whistled long. "Have you ever seen anything like that." I said in Cruithne. Most of the D'Angeline men in the convoy spoke Cruithne, but we went on and off between D'Angeline and the Alban tongue, it wasn't Eiren, but at least it was something from home.

"No, nothing," I replied to Fin with equal amazement. We had become friends over the journey across Terre d'Ange, even while Mairin had needed more personal time. I understood the need for privacy so I hadn't pushed her, but it was not in her normal character. Worry was starting to nibble at my mind.
But for now, that worry was pushed aside by the sight of the walls of the City.

I few of the men in the group had spoke of the history of it, not as long as the Eirens or Albans, but it certainly was impressive. They had spoken of key points in the city, the fountain the center, the river that ran past it, the areas and who lived where. The journey had been like our own little lesson and I was almost grateful for it; I turned to Ferris and smiled. "How many people do you think are waiting for us." I said with a little smile and bounced my brows, when I said people I meant women and I think he knew that.

"Less than you want, and more than I want," I retorted with a laugh, shaking my head at his single-minded goal to find fun in the arms of a D'Angeline woman.

I had to stop the ache in my chest as I listened to the conversation between Fin and Ferris, but I just kept reminding myself that I needed to get over it, I needed to let go of Ferris. I glanced to Fin then, and realized that since Fin was the one flirting with me, I should really find myself in his company more often.
"Yes, well, the best way to find out is to get here." I said in a firm voice as I looked to the pair. "Come on, stop flapping your jaws and focus on the ride." I said before I pressed my heals into my mount and broke away from them in a trot; I needed my distance. As I got closer to the city walls I saw a few men jump up onto horses and skitter off through the gate. Scouts I assumed, going to alert the Queen of our imminent arrival.

I rolled my eyes as Mairin rode off on her horse and looked back to Ferris. "Sorry about that," I said as I looked at him sadly. "It must be tough."

My brow furrowed at Maire's uncharacteristic behaviour. "What's tough?" I asked almost absently, my mind more focused on worrying about my friend.

I let out a exhaled of surprise at his comment, apparently I had been right, he hadn't noticed. I shook my head a little as I looked at him. "Well, you know, the cold shoulder that Mairin's been giving you since Azzalle." I explained. "Dagda mor Ferris, tell me you have noticed."

"Oh, I've noticed," I replied, glancing at Fin. "I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm trying to give her the space to figure it out. I'm... well I've started to get a little worried for her. This isn't like Mairin."

I looked off into the distance where Mairin was and then back to Ferris. "You can't be that slow can you brother?" I asked rhetorically. "I mean I haven't known you long but I never figured you for stupid."

My brows furrowed again, though this time from annoyance. I didn't like when people didn't talk straight, or when they called me stupid. "Whatever it is you're dancing around Fin, spit it out," I said.

I grew serious at his response as I looked at him. "Let me ask you something...how long have you known Mairin?" I asked curiously.

"Since we were children," I replied, confused at why he was asking. "Nearly our entire lives."

Just as I had thought. "And in that entire time, had you never given thought to the idea that she might be in love with you?" I asked curiously.

"In love with me?" I asked, surprised to the point of amazement. "Mairin couldn't be in love with me."

I shook my head slightly. "You are thick aren't you." I murmured, half teasing him as I did. "Do you not see the way she looks at you, have you not noticed all the things she does for you, how much she cares. Dagda mor Ferris, I barely know you two and I can tell. I'd kill to have a girl look at me like that, and I reckon that she's been looking at you like that for a long time."

I looked at him for a moment, not knowing what to say. "She... she's my best friend," I said rather plaintively. "Are you sure? You better not be pulling my leg."

I looked at Mairin off in the distance again and sighed before looking at Ferris. "Honestly brother, I don't know if she's in love with you." I turned my gaze to her once more before back. "What do I know about some one I might as well have met yesterday? All I know is I see how she was with you, how she changed after... Well look, I wouldn't have said anything to you if I didn't see how she reacted to you when you chided us for horsing around that day." I gave him a sympathetic look. "But the only sure way to know, is to ask her."

"I... But..." I stopped myself before I could continue sputtering.
After I gathered my thoughts, I shook my head. People were waiting for us in the City. Now was not the time. "As soon as we're settled, I'll... I'll talk to her," I told him. "Are all women so confusing?"

I chuckled and nodded. "Only when it comes to love." I said with a grin. "Just... be careful. Woman can be strange creatures, not one of them are the same with it comes to the same thing."

"Aye, I've heard that advice before, and I will do my best to follow it," I said with a smile. "Now let's get this over with." I kicked my horse into a trot, and we headed to the City.
