I rushed through the halls, glancing through doorways and out windows. Where was he? I bolted past the library, nimbly leaping over a stack of books when I heard my name.
"Keegan!" came the voice from inside the library. "Kee!"
Laughing I turned in mid-stride and dashed back into the room I had just past.
"Boy, you are going to crash right into a wall some day," said my history instructor Maurice, laughing as I tried to catch my breath.
"Sorry sir," I said, smiling even though my lungs were burning slightly. "I was looking for you and I guess my feet got ahead of my eyes. Look what I found in the old store you showed me. It was tucked behind a bunch of other scrolls."
I held out the scroll to him. He took it, carefully, for it looked old enough to disintegrate at any moment. He rolled it open on a table.
"Oh, Kee, it's magnificent," he said, looking at the map I had found.
"Isn't it? Look, it's so old that parts of Skaldia aren't even there. The store owner didn't even know he had it, he was as surprised as I was when I opened it," I said, looking over his shoulder at it.
"Keegan, this is amazing. You have such a talent for finding remarkable items," Maurice said, rolling it back up. "Make sure you keep it somewhere very safe." He held the scroll out to me.
"It's for you, Maurice," I said, smiling broadly. "Happy birthday."
I hugged him and dashed out of the library again before he could insist I keep it, like I knew he would. Maurice was as much a father to me as I had ever known and I loved giving him things that made his eyes dance like that.
Spying my friend Jules out on the grass, trying to look all dignified in front of a group of younger adepts, I began singing a war song at the top of my lungs. My voice carried through the halls and outside, but not soon enough for him to move out of my way as I came barreling through the door way and caught him in a flying tackle.
Laughing, and only cursing my name somewhat, he struggled to get out from beneath me. I took a handful of leaves and ruffled them into his long red hair. At which point he stopped trying to get away and flipped me over and sought to pin me down.
The girls laughed and squealed, covering their mouths and pointing. Jules roared like a warrior, though it was cut off as I wrapped my legs around him and flipped him off me. Knowing this would be my only chance to get away, for Jules was truly a lot stronger than me, I leapt up and dashed back inside. My laughter trailing behind me.
