It was obvious that summer was beginning to draw to a close, the days had become shorter and the nights cooler than they had been before, at least in Camlach. I had decided to walk to Elua's Square, my body becoming stiff from inactivity, or at least from not having as much activity as it used to, the daily toil of churning land to make things grow. I had not yet gone to the Palace to seek out the royal gardener in hopes that he might need some assistance and be willing to take me on, which was my own fault, and kept me in this limbo.
Thus I had taken to walking about the City, trying to get myself acquainted. At first I would head out either early morning or late at night to avoid the throngs of people and carriages, the noise and confusion that I was not used to and which jangled my nervers. But with time and with understanding of the City's layout, I started to venture out more during the times when people were alive to the world.
I approached the fountain, but it seemed that the slight bite in the weather did not stop those from coming out and enjoying waht little warm weather we had left. So, instead, I chose to sit myself under the tree, its enormous trunk supporting my back as its massive branches stemmed out above my head, creating a canopy of shade. I leaned back against the trunk and closed my eyes, listening to the rustle of leaves above me as the breeze played amongst the lush foliage.

I was walking in the square, enjoying the weather, when I saw a man sleeping under the tree. Not a very wise idea, any cutpurse could take advantage of a sleeping, or Elua forbid, passed out person on the street. Hesitantly, I approached the man. "Hello?" I asked carefully.

I had almost not heard the soft voice to my side, having been so transfixed on the sound of the tree and the play of the wind in its branches. I normally would have jumped, esepcially at the sound of a female voice, catching me out being so lazy. But I was feeling lazy, languid, and cracked open the eye closest to the direction that the soft voice came from, then opened the other and turned with a smile. Easing myself to my feet, I bowed, as I was taught to be a gentleman, even though rough around teh edges, then leaned against the sturdy trunk of the tree.
"Hello, m'lady," I said with a soft smile. I tried no to make too much eye contact, and definitely did not let my eyes wander over her, but instead looked a bit past her, towards the fountain, making a bit of eye contact every so often. "And how are you this fine early autumn day?"

He seemed perfectly at ease, as though it wasn't peculiar to lie out in the street asleep. "I am fine, thank you my lord," I said. "Are you alright? I thought you were sleeping, or Elua forbid, passed out."

I smiled down at her, dusting my hands off.
"I am alright, my lady," I said with a soft chuckle, "I was just listening to the sounds the tree makes, when there is a breeze passing through its leaves. Thank you for your concern my lady," I said softly as I ducked my head a bit out of shyness. "I am Henri, and I am new to the City," I said with a smile, bowing. "Would it be too forward for me to ask my lady's name?"

"I'm Abigail," I replied, "and I was going to warn you about cutpurses, but since you are awake, there is no need." I looked to him. "I'm new to the city too," I said. "I have only been here some months."

I smiled at what she said. "Well thank you Abigail. Next time, I will definitely be more aware. That thought hadn't even crossed my mind." I leaned my back against the tree, feeling the comfort of the hard, textured wood behind me, "And that is a few months you have over me. How are you finding it here? And where did you come from?" I asked, then, realizing how awkward my wording was I felt my cheeks grow warm.

"I came from Camlach," I replied. "My sister is the Vicomtesse d'Aubigne. It is...very different, but in a good way. Where are you from, Henri?"

I smiled brightly, probably like an idiot, but I didn't care. It was nice to have someone from home to converse with. "Yes, I remember thed'Aubigne name. I am from Camlach as well. Legard... we aren't very well known, I suppose, except for our lands. They always reap whatever is sewn," I said with a laugh. "I am happy to meet someone from home. Do you ever miss it?"

"Legard...I vaguely know the name," I said. "Though I am sure you are a very lovely family. I too am happy to meet someone from home! I miss it sometimes, but I am very happy here."

"We are," I said with a smile full of pride, "at least most of the time," when Pierre is away, I thought silently to myself. "But I definitely understand... though I find myself terribly restless in the City. Going from land to cobblestone... is harder than I anticipated." I looked at her as she stood and nearly forgot my manners. Looking around, I sighted abench not too far off that was free, guessing the lady might not wish to sit in the dirty under the tree like I had. "Do you care to sit, Abigail?" I asked, my voice soft. I was new to this sort of thing, and probably failing terribly at being the gentlemanly type.

"If you want to sit," I said, "though if you like trees, there are lots of gardens we could go to. I would love to get to know another of my countrymen."

"As would I," I said with a warm smile. "Well, if you don`t mind playing the guide, I would love to see a garden here," I said with a soft laugh. "I still don`t know where most everything is."

"We could go to the Sanctuary of Camael, if you like," I suggested. "There's a garden there, and a temple."

I smiled at her suggestion, taking a step towards her, but not too close, as I offered her my arm. "I think that that is a lovely idea. When I arrived, my brother took me to the temple of Elua," I said with a smile. "It was utterly lovely, so peaceful."

I accepted his arm. "I'm sure that was lovely," I said. "How many siblings do you have?"

I smiled as she took my arm, though I felt my cheeks heat. This was the first time I had had a lady on my arm other than my own sister. "Three. I have two older brothers and one younger sister. I am here for the wedding of one of my brothers.... Christophe," I said with a smile. "It will be my first wedding. Have you any siblings?" I asked as we walked away from the tree I had found shade under.

"Just one sister," I said. "She's the Vicomtesse d'Aubigne. I had a brother also, but he died as a child." I looked to him. "But a wedding is very exciting! Congratulations."

I frowned softly. "I am sorry for your loss," I said, thinking on the loss of my mother. But it was never nice to dwell on such sad thoughts. I smiled softly at her. "And thank you. It is rather exciting, although nerve wracking. I have not been good with speeches and well, I have a lot of catching up to do before I could represent my brother properly," I said with a chuckle. "Do... you know anything about the Shahrizai?" I asked as we walked.

I shrugged. "No more than rumours and innuendo," I said. "People talk of them as though they are dangerous, but I suppose that like all groups of people, some are dangerous and most are not." I looked to him. "What have you heard?"

"I guess the usual rabble. They can nigh read minds and are a group not to be messed with, very strong with familial ties, and... love to cause pain," I said looking on her, "but that is about all I know," I shrugged. "It does make me a little bit nervous," I said with a soft laugh, laughing at how I sounded. Probably like a scared boy, not a concerned man.

"I have heard some of that too," I said. "Though I am not too concerned, I have not met one yet." I looked to him. "Is there something the matter? Are you in trouble with one of them?"

I laughed, "I should hope not, when one shall be made a sister in law. My brother is engaged to a lovely lady, her name is Malabelle... and I suspect I will have to meet the rest of her family and ... well they are a strong family, I do not wish to seem weak," I said, confiding in her. "I do not wish to make things more difficult for her and my brother by acting out of line, or awkwardly, and I am terrible at these sorts of things," I muttered, more to myself. "You must think me rather odd," I said with a weak smile.

"Oh no," I said, "I don't. I feel the same way sometimes, especially compared to my sister; she is so worldly, and I am just a country bumpkin. I am sure your future sister in law doesn't think you are weak."

I smiled at her words. We seemed to be more alike than I had reckoned. "You? A bumpkin?" I asked. "I truly would not have thought so upon first glance, my lady. You look and speak nothing like the sort," I said with a smile, "though you certainly are not haughty like the personalities I imagined I would have been met with," I said with a soft laugh. "And thank you," I said, feeling colour rise to my cheeks, "I am just... strong in unconventional ways," I said with a soft laugh. "Have you found it easy, making friends here?" I asked, moving away from the topic of me. As the youngest son and second youngest child, I was not used to being in the limelight.

"Oh, no, I really am, especially compared to some that I have met. Some people really are haughty, but most are just so...cultured, I supposed. They understand the ways of the City." I thought of Shea, and how worldly he was, before pushing him out of my mind. I'd spent many a night thinking and rethinking what had happened, until it was all a jumbled mess in my brain. No, I didn't want to think about that now. "I suppose it's easier to make friends with some than with others, but so far things are all right."

"Well then I am glad for you," I said with a soft smile, my fingers making themselves busy by fiddling with themselves, strumming against my pants, finding things to keep my nervousness at bay, or as much at bay as possible. "Well, you seem rather cultured to me. I think... I think that it is moreso in the way a person carries themself. Anyone can learn any number of things that might make them seem cultured, but you have the air about you," I said with a smile. "Anyways, you probably think I am just rambling on and on and on," I said with a chuckle.

"Aw well thanks Abigail," I said as I felt my cheeks heat and I looked to the ground, kicking a stone out of the way, "I like listening to you talk to," I replied. Though then I felt a little idiotic. I did like listening to her, she had a lovely voice and was very sweet. "So... do you go to the temples often?" I asked, not wanting to linger too long on my sillyness.
