"But why Papa." I remember asking my father as we walked toward the Night Court.
"I'm sorry my son, I would gladly house you if I could...I just, I can't find work and, well you'll be happy there. I know you will me." He explained running his hand over my head.
"I don't want to go, I'll be happy with you." I exclaimed as we neared what I would come to know as Heliotrope House.
"I know Juli, but this is how it must be." I sulked slightly as we passed the large iron gates and took the long walk to the front door. We were ushered in and toward the Dowayne's office.
"Marcus," I heard the looming voice of the Dowayne and hide behind my father.
"You're right on time."
"Thank you for seeing us," My father replied. "And thank you for helping us." The Dowayne looked over me appraisingly.
"Well, lets see the boy." My father pushed me forward taking a step back.
"He looks strong, or atleast he could be once he's fed." The Dowayne turned me lifting my arms and checking my eyes, ears and mouth.
"Alright," The Dowayne said finally. "We'll take him in." I looked back to my father who nodded, but he wasn't happy at all, his eyes were blurry with tears.
"Papa?" I said feeling a tightness in my chest.
"Lydia," The Dowayne called over a girl. "Please take Julian to the nursery."
"Papa?" I felt the hand of the girl on mine.
"Its alright Juli, go on. You'll be happy here. Its a good life and you should thank your luck that the Dowayne is taking you in." My father said as the young girl gently tugged on my arm. I felt my own tears flowing now as we walked past him. In a quick dart he leaned over and wrapped his arms around me squeezing me tight.
"Be a good boy Juli, make your mama proud." He whispered before kissing my cheek and then stood stepping back from me.
"Good bye my son." He whispered once more as I was led away.
"Papa." I cried though still following the girl. When the door of the Dowayne's office closed I felt lost. It was the last time I would ever see my father again.
"Juli," Whispered the girl holding my hand. "Is that your nickname?" She asked. I nodded quietly.
"May I call you Juli?" I glanced up at her, she gave me a sad smile.
"Yes." I said after a moment.
"You'll be alright Juli," She said finally. "My mother and father left me here too. I know what its like." She squeezed my hand softly.
"But you really will like it here, I promise."
