I was out wandering the Palace District, keeping myself apprised of the state of business. I noticed a shop I hadn’t actually been inside as of yet and wandered in.
Once inside, I began perusing the offered clothing.

While tending my shop, I noticed a man wander in from the streets. He seemed to be browsing, and it didn't seem like he had been here before. Since I had no important commissions to work on at the moment, I walked over to him, intent on making a sale to the first-time customer.
"Hello there, sir. Would you be interested in any of my fine wares?" I asked, tiredly. I hadn't slept much the night before, and it had left me in a sour mood.

“I was just looking at the moment,” I said, smiling. He certainly wasn’t the welcoming type, was he? “I’ve not been in here before.”

"Probably not, it's a new shop," I explained for probably the hundredth time today. It never really annoyed me, but it was very tiring to hear it so much.
"So what are you looking for?" I asked him, probably more brisk than would be polite. It had been a busy day earlier, and I'd had to be very short with my customers.

His attitude was beginning to wear the edge off my smile and pleasant attitude.
“I just came to look around, see what you offered. Is that a problem?” I asked.

"Problem? No, no problem; I'm just sick and tired of you people walking in here like you own the place." I quipped in reply to his prodding.

Any shreds of courtesy I had left blew away.
“Someone has to act like they own the place, and it’s certainly not you, not with that attitude,” I said, my voice tight as I turned away from his merchandise to face him full on. “And just what do you mean by ‘you people’?”

"Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. You aren't the one who sits here all day, every day, trying to help people like you," I returned back at him. "And don't give me any of that bollocks, you know full well what I mean by 'you people'. I don't suppose you're trying to play me a fool, too?"

“I have no need to play you a fool, you are doing that well enough on your own,” I said bitingly. “As for what I know, it’s obviously more than you in regards to how to run a successful business. You aren’t going to be in business long, that is obvious.”

"Tcha! You assume to lecture me on my business?" I replied, my attitude inflamed, "You are quite an presumptuous person, you know that? I'd like to see you run a shop like this one! You'd go out of business sooner than I, that's much is certain."

“I am the Second of House Bryony and I have interests in businesses all over the City. I could make a success out of your business without even an effort,” I told him, scoffing at him. “I hope no one has invested in your business, they are doomed to lose their money with you at the helm.”

"You think to scare me? Listen, boy, you may have interests all over the city, but I have interests the world over. And boy, you don't even know the meaning of a hard day's work, I can tell that from just looking at you. You don't even have a callous to your hand!"
I spat on the ground near his feet. This man was the embodiment of arrogance, and I would not tolerate him lecturing me about my work that I had built from literally nothing.

My hands curled into fists, and only my dedication to my House kept me from hitting him and sending his arrogant ass sliding across the room.
Instead, I laughed at him, deep and true. “No wonder your store is empty of customers except for a curious person who made the mistake of wandering off the street.” I looked around the shop, taking measure of the space itself. “I should start looking for possible operations to fill this space in a couple months when you’re gone.”

I felt my pulse quicken for the first time in a long time. His hands curled into fists; I crossed my arms in a dismissive posture. "Is that a threat? Because it doesn't scare me. Now maybe if there was any weight to your words it might be worth hearing, but I am currently unimpressed."

“It’s not a threat at all,” I said with a smirk. “Just an honest assessment.”

"If you think your assessment has any weight, you ought to reconsider." I replied, seething.

“We shall see,” I said, chuckling. I bowed irreverently to him. “Good day sir, I think I shall spend my time at better establishments.”
Then I turned and headed out the door.

"Good," I said, "Leave, you idiot. I don't want to see your face in here again."
As the door shut, I unclenched my fists, and took in a sharp breath, letting it out frustratedly. Fortunately it had not come to blows, because the penalties for fighting in public were rather harsh. I returned to my business after that, but closed my shop early in case another fool decided to enter and bother me again.

I laughed aloud as I exited. What a buffoon. No wonder his shop had been empty at one of the busiest times of day. Whistling to myself, I headed down the street and to the next shop.
